Movie Review: Goon

Thursday, March 8, 2012 0 comments

Synopsis: Doug Glatt, a slacker who discovers he has a talent for brawling is approached by a minor league hockey coach and invited to join the team as the "muscle." Despite the fact that Glatt can't skate his best friend, Pat, convinces him to give it a shot, and Glatt becomes a hero to the team and their fans, until the league's reigning goon becomes threatened by Glatt's success and decides to even the score.
Starring: Jay Baruchel, Seann William Scott, Alison Pill, Marc-André Grondin, Eugene Levy, Liev Schreiber
Directed by: Michael Dowse
U.S. Rating: R

There's not much to say about Goon. A brainless sport comedy that was all about punches, fights, blood and... More blood.

Seann William Scott plays the role of Doug Glatt, a very respectul guy who got into a minor hockey league after beating and kicking a hockey player's butt who tried to punch his friend Pat during a game. Glatt was approached by the coach of a team after this incident and invited him to join the team. After his success on this minor league, he was promoted to join a team on a higher league, where he would face Ross Reardon, the ruthless player that everyone fears to death.

As said before, it is a brainless film, with a very, very poor script. Seann William Scott plays kind of a different role. We usually see him playing roles as a bad, disrespecful guy... But in this particular role, he actually plays a role of a very respectful guy with a single talent: To punch people on the face.

Definitely, a film to rent and watch on a DVD (when all other comedy films were already taken).
I would rate this movie with a 2/5

Movie Review: The Grey

Synopsis: A group of oil-rig roughnecks are left stranded on the sub-arctic tundra after their plane experiences a complete mechanical failure and crashes into the remote Alaskan wilderness. The survivors, battling mortal injuries, biting cold and ravenous hunger, are relentlessly hunted and pursued by a vicious pack of rogue wolves.
Starring: Liam Neeson, Dallas Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo. Nonso Anozie
Directed by: Joe Carnahan
U.S. Rating: R

Director Joe Carnahan reteamed with Liam Neeson to bring one of the most tense survival thrillers I've seen in a very long time. Based in the cold and wild desolated areas of Alaska, this film brings a great photography and an intense story of men trying to survive a plane crash, terrible winter weather and wild animals, in this particular case, wolves.

Liam Neeson has been one of my top favorite actors for a long time. In recent years, he's consolidated his prestigious acting performance and presence in Hollywood with amazing action films and thrillers like Taken, Unknown, Chloe, After.Life or even The A-Team. His acting performance in this tense thriller was superb. In this particular film, his tough "I'm done with all this" attitude towards people and his reality looked a piece of cake for him. He was simply great.

The film, as said before, was extremely tense. A few group of men who survived a plane crash in the middle of nowhere, in the extremely cold winter of Alaska, fighting for their lives to get to a save place, since they were chased and hunted by a pack of wild wolves. It was a bloody film, yes, but not in a disgusting way.

Liam Neeson plays the role of John Ottway, a quiet man who works in Alaska killing the wolves that threaten an oil drilling team. On his last day on the job, Ottway pens a letter to his wife Ana and plans to commit suicide. While holding his gun to his mouth, however, Ottway hears the howl of a wolf, which stops him.

Ottway and the oil drilling team head home on a plane, but it crashes in a heavy blizzard. Ottway sees a vision of his wife but suddenly awakens to find himself in the middle of this cold, white desert, with an horrific image of the plane completely destroyed, on fire and dead people all over the place.

After finding a few survivals, Ottway assumes leadership of the group and sets the survivors to task collecting material for a fire. While Ottway is searching for wood, he's attacked by a gray wolf. He is quickly rescued by the others and explains that they are most likely standing in the wolves' territory and are unwelcome. From this moment on, he knows they're in extremely danger and they need to do whatever it takes to find a safe place. Ottway and the remaining survivors continue on and make camp in the woods, being followed and in some cases, attacked by this wild pack of wolves.

Further in their travels, the dwindling survivors come across a high canyon wall within which, screened by trees, they identify a river and a possible route of escape. They have to face more difficulties and accidents on the way, leaving some other survivals on the way.

At the end, Ottway (being the only survival left) finds himself surrounded by the pack of wolves, leading Ottway to discover that he has walked right into their den. He is soon spotted by the alpha male and the other pack members back off. Ottway is all by himself, to fight for his life against the alpha male, and maybe, be able to keep his journey back home.

Definitely a great film to watch, totally recommended.

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

Synopsis: Mikael Blomkvist is a financial reporter determined to restore his honor after being convicted of libel. Engaged by one of Sweden's wealthiest industrialists, Henrik Vanger, to get to the bottom of the long-ago disappearance of his beloved niece, Harriet -- murdered, Vanger believes, by a member of his large family -- the journalist heads to a remote island on the frozen Swedish coast, unaware of what awaits him. At the same time, Lisbeth Salander, an unusual but ingenious investigator with Milton Security, is hired to do a background check on Blomkvist, a job that ultimately leads to her joining Mikael in his investigation of who killed Harriet Vanger. Though Lisbeth shields herself from a world that has repeatedly betrayed her, her hacking skills and single-minded focus become invaluable. While Mikael goes face-to-face with the tight-lipped Vangers, Lisbeth plies the wired shadows. They begin to trace a chain of homicides from the past into the present, forging a fragile strand of trust even as they are pulled into the most savage currents of modern crime.
Starring: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård, Elodie Yung
Directed by: David Fincher
U.S. Rating: R

There's no doubt that David Fincher is one of my TOP favorite directors in Hollywood. Some of my all-time favorite films (Seven, Fight Club, Panic Room, The Social Network) has been directed by this talented director, whom shows he likes to get deep into those books and scripts he decides to bring to the big screen, get the bare essencial content from them, cut, adapt and edit them until he gets such amazing films from this hard work. Most of his films turned into classics and, I'm sure that his most recent one, his personal remake from Swedish international success "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" will also be added to this classics list in the future.

There are two different perspectives to review this film. We can review it from the perspective of those ones who have watched Flincher's remake "after" watching the original Swedish version or, we can also review it from the perspective of those ones who have watched Flincher's remake "before" watching the original Swedish version. I include myself in this second group: Those ones who have watched it before watching the original Swedish one, and that's the perspective I'll take.

Before I start writing my personal point of view and impressions of this film, I must say that I really wanted to go through other reviews from some of the most important Movie Blogs on the net. There were some who shared my personal point of view and thoughts about it, while there were some others critizing Fincher's work and the lead cast's performance. From my personal point of view, I should start saying that I prefer Flincher's film over Oplev's. Note that I'm not saying that Oplev's original version was bad... far from it! It was an amazing and remarkable film! But we can clearly notice the huge directorial differences and styles. In this order of ideas, I must say I definitely liked Flincher's work and film style.

I was wowed with Flincher's version for "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo". The cast gathered for this film was fantastic. There wasn't a better actor to perform the lead role (Mikael Blomkvist) than Daniel Craig. He delivered such a unique performance, even though, it couldn't be considered better than actor Michael Nyqvist's performace in the Swedish version, since Nyqvist was incredibly good too. Now, I have found some controversies on some reviews about Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara's performances as Lisbeth Salander, a disturbing gothic, anti-social punk investigator/hacker type who lives paycheck to paycheck at the mercy of her weirdo state guardian. Some important reviewers and blogs believe that Rapace's performance was much better than Mara's. I DO not believe that, no matter how incredibly good was Noomi Rapace's performance, Rooney Mara's performace blew me away. Her physical gothic/punk anti-social appearance and look was so, but so much believable than Rapace. Both acting performaces were superb, but Rooney Mara did top her performance on those specific moments when she had to show her punk & anti-social behavior and fictional personality.

While Oplev's original Swedish version was extremely detailed and led by the book, Flincher gave the film a more "theatrical" appeal, printing his personal style and experienced touch. We can easily notice some differences, even though, Flincher kept intact the story and focused just on some important and crucial details, as well as timing perfectly well some relevant events, even when he omitts some not so important events and situations shown on the Swedish version that could be taken as relevant. Flincher's version is 10 minutes longer than the original film, taking it to 2 hours and 40 minutes.

In case you haven't read the book or watched the Swedish film, here's the (short) plot of the film:

Mikael Blomkvist, the co-owner and writer of Millennium magazine, has just lost a libel case against crooked businessman Hans-Erik Wennerström, for which he must pay 600,000 Swedish kronor (approximately 87,000 USD) in damages. Meanwhile, Lisbeth Salander, a researcher for Milton Security and a computer hacker, has compiled a very extensive background check on Blomkvist for Henrik Vanger, retired CEO of Vanger Industries, for a job that Henrik wants him to perform. Despite the recent scandal, Salander passes Blomkvist as "clean."

Blomkvist receives a phone call from Henrik's lawyer, Dirch Frode, who offers him two jobs: to write a Vanger family history, and, using the information provided by Henrik for the memoir, to solve the murder of his niece Harriet Vanger, who disappeared almost 40 years previously; Henrik is convinced that someone in the family killed her.

Blomkvist gets to work right away, staying in a cottage that Henrik provides. He immediately starts investigating the case, collecting some more relevant information about the misterious disappearance of Harriet. He will meet with some members of the Vanger family. Blomkvist finds Harriet's notebook, containing the names of five women with a 5-digit number next to each of their names, secret codes related with some biblical passages showing the killing method used to murder a number of young women over 35 years ago.

Blomkvist begins looking for a researcher to help him find out more about the Bible verses. Frode recommends Salander, whom Blomkvist learns did the background check on him. Upon seeing the incredibly detailed report, he discovers Salander hacked into his computer. He then visits her apartment, making her an offer to help him find Harriet's murderer, to which she agrees.

Soon they will start working together tying all those loosed knots regarding Harriet's disappearance, until they will discover something extremely sordid that might be directly related with Harriet's event.

Definitely, one of the best (if not the best!) thriller films of 2011. The direction was brilliant, the acting performance by ALL cast involved in this film was simply superb. TOTALLY recommended.

I would rate this movie with a huge massive 5/5

Movie Review: The Green Hornet

Monday, January 17, 2011 0 comments

Synopsis: Britt Reid, son and heir to Los Angeles' largest newspaper fortune, is a rich, spoiled playboy who has been happy to maintain a direction-less existence. When his father James Reid dies, Britt meets an impressive and resourceful company employee, Kato. They realize that they have the resources to do something worthwhile with their lives and finally step out of James Reid's shadow. Kato builds the ultimate weapon, The Black Beauty, an indestructible car with every weapon imaginable and Britt decides that in order to be heroes, they will pose as villains. With the help of Britt's new secretary, Lenore Case, they learn that the chief criminal in the city is named Benjamin Chudnofsky. He has united all the gangs under his power, and he quickly sees that the Green Hornet is a direct threat to the prosperous criminal underworld he controls.
Starring: Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz, Christoph Waltz, Edward James Olmos, David Harbour, Tom Wilkinson
Directed by: Michel Gondry
U.S. Rating: PG-13

I grew up watching amazing old TV series. Even though I was just a kid, I loved and totally enjoyed watching action TV series like The A-Team, The Hulk, Starsky and Hutch, CHiPs and especially, The Green Hornet. This last one was my top favorite one. I totally felt like an adult watching these TV series with my dad and older brother. I was such a fan of Bruce Lee (Kato).

It's been decades since I watched The Green Hornet, but I still remember this TV series like it was yesterday.

That's the main reason why I was so excited when I heard for the first time that Columbia Pictures would bring The Green Hornet to the big screen. I tried to follow all the updates, criticisms and comments about this production, and to be honest, I was kind of surprised that Seth Rogen would take the role of Britt Reid, since I didn't know how a comedian would deliver the real character of Britt Reid in this film. I didn't know he was the co-writer of the script.

The film starts with a flashback of Britt's early years. He lost his mom being just a little boy. His dad, James Reid, is the owner of the most important newspaper in LA (The Daily Sentinel). James didn't have much time to spend with his son. James expected too much from his son Britt, but he didn't get the attention and love he needed from his own father. Now, being a 28-year-old guy, he's a  famous irresponsible "party boy". He doesn't want to learn anything about his dad's empire. He just cares of getting up in the morning, enjoy his coffee and get ready for another wild day.

When his dad dies in his garden from an allergic reaction to a bee sting, he's shocked about the situation and new responsibilities he'll have to face with the newspaper.

When he wakes up the morning after, he notices that his "special coffee" is gone.  When he tries to find a responsible for this, he finds out that his coffee was prepared every morning by his dad's mechanic, which he fired the day before, after finding the news of his dad's death.

Kato was more than a mechanic. He was a skilled martial artist who not just took care of all his dad's cars collection, but prepared the best coffee ever from a coffee machine created by himself.

Britt and Kato start knowing each other better. Kato shows Britt some of the secret weapons he prepared for his dad's personal security. Britt notices how crazy and worried his dad was regarding his own security. Britt tells Kato how awful and boring their lives are and he tries to convince him that they should do something about it. They go out on a night and start fighting some minor crimes, but they're suddenly involved in a bad social perception of their truthful intentions, when they're captured on a video while visiting  his dad's graveyard to cut the head off a memorial statue of his dad on a whim. In the process, they are mistaken by the police for the criminals and chased through the street.

Britt convinces Kat that they should become crimefighters who pose as criminals in order to infiltrate real criminals, and also to prevent enemies from using innocents against them. Britt tries to change this bad perception using his dad's newspaper, giving more and more attention to his secret identity and work. Meanwhile, Kato works on some several gadgets and weapons and fits them in a black sedan called "The Black Beauty".

They decide to fight the most important criminal in LA, Chudnofsky. He runs all the night clubs and illegal drug operations in the city. All the drug dealers and illegal labs work for him. Britt and Kato will start destroying his operations and leaving a business card with an "e-mail address".

One of the very first scenes shows the moment when Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz) arrives to a new night club opened in LA. Chudnofsky went to visit the owner of this place to complaint that he was affecting his reputation opening this place and selling drugs without his authorization. Chudnofsky was the biggest criminal and drug dealer in the city and he wouldn't accept that a new guy in town would open a night club and sell drugs without paying him for it. So, he offers the owner (I won't mention who this person was... he was HILARIOUS!) to give him the night club and turn into his employee. The dialogue on this opening scene was extremely funny and entertaining.

Britt hires Lenore Case (Cameron Diaz) a personal assistant with some expertise and a degree in criminology. Britt tries to get from her the way a criminal mind like "The Green Hornet" would act, and that's the way they move all their actions and hits.

When Chudnofsky feels threatened by The Green Hornet, he tries to kill them (Britt and Kato) and fails in this attempt. Then he tries to make a deal with him to kill the DA of LA and divide the city and illegal businesses in two. The DA of LA is also trying to deal with Britt for his re-election.

At the end, Chudnofsky tries to change his image and changes his name to Bloodnofsky, dressing with a red suit to make the point that blood is what everyone would see when they think of him. Bloodnofsky and his gang, along with the DA will try to kill The Green Hornet but they will fail at the end.

The plot is completely away from the original idea and characters set for the TV series. It is also, obviously, set for the modern days. I was expecting something else, since I thought they would bring the original idea and action set for the TV series, but at the end, they decided to give a comedy point of view to the script, the same way it happened with Starsky and Hutch, played by Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. Both TV series were tough action scripts, but both films didn't follow the original frame.

I was also excited to watch some really good action from Kato. Kato was originally played by Bruce Lee, so it was amazing to watch him kick some butts with his amazing and unique skills in martial arts. Jay Chou performed his role amazingly well, but he couldn't deliver the fight scenes I'd expect to see with any other possible asian actor. Christoph Waltz has become one of my top favorite actors. He is simply amazing. His role in Inglorious Basterds was a poem, but I felt like he was unconfortable playing his role in this film, it didn't help him to show his real talent.

Another special criticism is about the 3D tech used for this film. To be honest, I don't know the reason of shooting this film in 3D. The quality was poor, I didn't feel like I was actually watching a film in 3D. It was a waste of money on my tickets. I would have rathered to watch it in 2D. The only reason  watched it in 3D was because they didn't have it in 2D.

You might think that, due to all these criticisms and comments, the film is not worth to watch. But let me tell you that you're wrong. I must say that I haven't laughed so much in a film at theaters since The Hangover. I laughed from start to end. Some of the dialogue lines were hilarious. We really enjoyed and had a pretty good time. I think they were trying to target the young audience, since they wouldn't have any idea of the original idea of this TV series.

I totally recommend the film, you will have some really good laughs. If you watched the original TV series, don't expect anything close to the facts and original idea. You will have some good laughs and entertaining time.

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: Ghost Rider

Monday, April 5, 2010 0 comments

Synopsis: A motorcycle stuntman, Johnny Blaze, makes a pact with a dark force, selling his soul to save his girlfriend. When the bargain goes sour and the girl isn't saved, Blaze is transformed, gaining raging superpowers. Based on the Marvel comic series.

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Wes Bentley, Eva Mendes, Matthew Long, Peter Fonda
Directed by: Mark Steven Johnson
U.S. Rating: PG-13

It's been a while since we saw Nicolas Cage with a decent haircut, right? He has tried some different haircut style on his most recent films, and the truth is that none of them has really worked. But, no matter how ugly his hair might look, we can't say that he's such a good actor.

Anyway, if Ghost Rider didn't have Nicolas Cage as the lead role, the story of this film would be totally different. He gave life to the film and tried to cover the many different holes on this weak script.

Nicolas Cage is Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stuntman who was forced to make a pact with the devil on his early years, just to save the life of his father, who was dying with a terminal cancer. Right the morning after he made this pact, his father was healthy and cured from his cancer, but he died that same day on an accident at one of his stunt acts. That day, Johnny left everything behind, especially his true and pure love Roxanne Simpson. He grew up and became a famous motorcycle while Roxanne became a famous journalist. They met at one of his stunt shows and from there on, destiny would help them to share their lives, experiences and tragedies.

The pact? Johnny sold his sold to the devil, and the devil wants to use him to fight his fights and collect those unpaid debts with some other demons. At the end of this fights, the devil wants to get all this power gained by Johnny, but he'll refuse and decides to be the Ghost Rider, just preparing the room for the sequel that is already on the "negotiating and script acceptance" process.

It is actually a good and enjoyable film. If you don't hold it under close scrutiny, it can be really entertaining. Especially because it can be considered an entertaining action/horror film being rated PG-13.

What did I like from this movie?

1. Really good CGI effects
2. Great cast involved in this film

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. A weak plot, not worth for the good CGI content and cast involved in the film

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: Green Zone

Tuesday, March 23, 2010 0 comments

Synopsis: During the U.S.-led occupation of Baghdad in 2003, Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller and his team of Army inspectors were dispatched to find weapons of mass destruction believed to be stockpiled in the Iraqi desert. Rocketing from one bobby-trapped and treacherous site to the next, the men search for deadly chemical agents but stumble instead upon an elaborate cover-up that inverts the purpose of their mission. Spun by operatives with intersection agendas, Miller must hunt through covert and faulty intelligence hidden on foreign soil for answers that will either clear a rogue regime or escalate a war in an unstable region. And at this blistering time and in this combustible place, he will find the most elusive weapon of all is the truth.

Starring: Matt Damon, Amy Ryan, Greg Kinnear, Antoni Corone, Nicoye Banks
Directed by: Paul Greengrass
U.S. Rating: R

I should start saying that if you're a fan of the Jason Bourne franchise and you're expecting it to be another "Bourne" kind of film, you will be disappointed.

I'm not saying that it is not a good film, because it is! But it's not the kind of film played by Matt Daemon and directed by Paul Greengrass. You might as why? For me, the Jason Bourne franchise was focused on the character, the secret agent who lost his mind and tried to recover his life and memories. Green Zone is more about the content and context. A pretty good action movie with a strong political and ethical content about the war in Iraq.

The film is about Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller, a loyal officer focused on accomplishing the missions assigned to his team. He's in charge of finding and inspecting the sites that are supposed to have (hidden) weapons of mass destruction. Miller finds strange that all the sites taken are empty. During a planning meeting, he tries to confirm the information provided by the intelligence sources regarding these sites with weapons of mass destruction. Soon, he'll find that there's something wrong either with the source or the truth involved with the missions assigned.

After following the lead of a piece of information given by a local, Miller and his team will find one of Saddam's top men. They captured one of this man's assistant, but an elite team will take this man out of his command and control. While he tries to find answers about all this situation, he contacts Martin Brown, a CIA leader related with some of the intelligence jobs in the Middle East. they will work together to get access to the people captured and get the information needed to contact Al Rawi.

Miller will find that Al Rawi had contact with the American intelligence before the beginning of the war and provided information about the real program of WMD held by Saddam Hussein.

As said, it is an action film with a strong political and ethical content related with the reasons that pushed the U.S. and the U.K. (among other few countries) to invade Iraq and take Saddam out of the power.

As said before, if you're a Matt Daemon & Paul Greengrass' fan, you must watch the film. Don't expect it to be a "Jason Bourne" kind of film, but you won't be disappointed at all, since you'll get as much and good action as you got in that amazing franchise. Totally recommended!

What did I like from this movie?

1. Pretty basic but strong script, with a good content
2. Great cast and good direction
3. Some really good action scenes and some good suspense

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Nothing at all

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

Movie Review: Good Hair

Wednesday, February 10, 2010 0 comments

Synopsis: When Chris Rock's daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?" the bewildered comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl's head. Rock visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people. Celebrities such as Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symone, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter's question. What he discovers is that black hair is a big business that doesn't always benefit the black community and little Lola's question might well be bigger than his ability to convince her that the stuff on top of her head is nowhere near as important as what is inside.

Starring: Chris Rock, Maya Angelou, Marvet Britto, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Rhonda Cowan
Directed by: Jeff Stilson
U.S. Rating: PG-13

I'm a huge fan of Chris Rock. I enjoy his movies, TV Shows and especially, his comedy stand up shows. This time, Chris has come with something completely different... a documentary. When Chris Rock's daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?", Chris decided to search the reasons behind that question and find the cultural, financial and social areas related with one of the most important things in women's lives, especially black women... their hair :)

In a very fresh and really funny way, Chris discovers many things that honestly, I didn't know and never heard about women's hair. Before I watched this documentary, I never heard about relaxers, I never... ever knew that these beautiful and famous black actresses used weaves (I didn't even know what a weave was!), I knew about the Indian hair, but never knew some of the things said and shown on this documentary, and finally, the millionaire industry behind the hair, especially, black women's hair. How can a woman pay from 1000 to 5000 dollars for a weave, and some women replace them every month!... Crazy!

A really entertaining, fresh and funny documentary, so worth to watch! Chris Rock nailed it in this, his first comedy/documentary about... hair.

What did I like from this movie?

1. Chris Rock rocks on this documentary
2. The celebrities participating on the documentary was more than entertaining. Some of them are well known (Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symone, Maya Angelou, Reverend Al Sharpton, etc.)
3. The interviews and conversations at the barber shops... hilarious! There are no places like barber shops

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. If he used the time he used to show the BB contest in more content and conversation, it would be even better. The BB contest was kind of boring

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Synopsis: Who is Don Ready? Salesman? Lover? Song Stylist? Semi-professional dolphin trainer? Ready is all of the above - except for a dolphin trainer. When he's asked to help save an ailing local car dealership from bankruptcy, Ready and his ragtag crew descend on the town of Temecula like a pack of coyotes on a basket full of burgers. Selling, drinking, selling and going to strip clubs is their stock and trade. And they do it well. What Don doesn't expect is to fall in love and find his soul (cue heartfelt piano).

Starring: Jeremy Piven, Ving Rhames, David Koechner, Kathryn Hahn, Tony Hale
Directed by: Neal Brennan
U.S. Rating: R

Some good laughs and rude humor is what you'll get from The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard. I consider that it wasted such a great cast in a lousy plot. There were some hilarious moments during the film, but you feel like riding in a roller-coaster, with some wild turns, ups and downs. It doesn't offer a constant comedy, or at least, not enough to make you laugh. Said that, I must say that I really enjoyed it. It wouldn't be a movie to watch at the theaters, but it is a good option for a DVD rental.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard is about Don Ready, a very controversial and successful car salesman working with an excentric team. Don and his team are being hired by a desperate car dealership owner who needs to sell over 200 cars in a 4th of July weekend or he'll innevitably lose his business. Don and his team arrives to Temecula and drastically change the business vision and sales tactics. Don is a renegade guy who's never settled down for anyone ot anything, even though, things change this time when he meets Ivy, the daugther of the car dealership owner. 3 days of crazy sales and weird/hilarious situations. The goal? Sell every single car in the lot, save the business and get the girl.

What did I like from this movie?

1. "It's a man band, Big Ups! Google it!..." Hilarious!
2. The 10 years-old boy trapped in an adult's body and Kathryn Hahn's trying to seduce him
3. The DJ... "noone tells a DJ how to do their job, or what to play!"
4. The patriotic speech about Pearl Harbour and the incident with the asian guy!

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. The moment when Will Ferrell visits Don Ready and the whole story about the way he died. It was one of those low/weird moments in this film

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

With encouragement from her friends Rosetta, Silvermist, Fawn and Iridessa, Tink learns the key to solving her problems lies in her unique tinker abilities and discovers that when she's true to herself, magical things can happen.

Directed by: Bradley Raymond
U.S. Rating: G

I love Tinkerbell. I don't know how many times I have seen this movie, but I just can't get enough of it. No, I don't have any children. Is that weird?

The music is totally cute, I love the new fairy friends, and the world of Pixie Hollow. Disney has done it again!

I would rate this movie with a 5/5

Movie Review: The Great Debaters

Friday, October 30, 2009 1 comments

Synopsis: Inspired by a true story, "The Great Debaters" chronicles the journey of Professor Melvin Tolson, a brilliant but volatile debate team coach who uses the power of words to shape a group of underdog students from a small African American college in the deep south into a historically elite debate team. A controversial figure, Professor Tolson challenged the social mores of the time and was under constant fire for his unconventional and ferocious teaching methods as well as his radical political views.

Starring: Denzel Washington, Forest Whitaker, Jermaine Williams, J. D. Evermore, John Heard
Directed by: Denzel Washington
U.S. Rating: PG-13

If there's someone perfect for key roles with long speeches, that person is Denzel Washington. Once again, like in Malcom X, Remember The Titans and other great movies, Denzel Washington brings such an amazing movie with a great played role. This time, as Melvin Tolson, a debate team coach with a dream, prepare the minds of his students to reach their potential and debate their ideas with the power of their words and reason. I'm as huge fan of Denzel Washington, but what I really like about this movie, besides its amazing plot and story (based on a true story) is that no matter how great were Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker in this movie, all the students were amazing, and none of them are famous or well known.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The way it expresses the cruel truth about the racism during those years and how they could overcome the situation and be the best debate team in the U.S., being undefeated for over 10 years
2. I really laughed when the little boy, Forrest's son gets all dressed up to impress the new girl as well as the moment when they're at the party and he's dreaming that he's dancing with her
3. All the debate scenes were really good and enjoyable
4. The final scene, when they're debating in Harvard and Denzel Washington, who didn't have permission to leave the state, went there to see them achieving their goal
5. When they're starting their debate classes and one of them asked Denzel a little bit about him and he gave him such an amazing speech

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Nothing, a really great, complete and entertaining plot. It was well played and directed

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

Movie Review: Gin Gwai (The Eye)

Thursday, October 29, 2009 0 comments

Synopsis: At the age of two, Wong Kar Mun went blind. Eighteen years later a new and risky corneal transplant operation restores her vision, but a series of inexplicable events leads her to believe there is much more than meets the eye to her newfound gift of sight. Mysterious black-clad figures seem to foreshadow sudden deaths, and horribly disfigured denizens of another side haunt her everyday existence. Unable to define her own identity, she comes to understand that whenever she looks into a mirror she doesn't see herself but instead sees another woman: Ling, the original owner of the corneas. It seems that Mun has inherited Ling's fate and the misery that comes with the ability to see more than what she wants to behold.

Starring: Lee Sin Je, Lawrence Chou, Chutcha Rujinanon, Candy Lo, Pierre Png
Directed by: Danny Pang, Oxide Pang
U.S. Rating: R

Freaky and scary! Gin Gwai is simply the original version of the movie "The Eye" played by Jessica Alba. I believe that Hollywood has to learn so much about horror movies from the japanese horror writers. Movies like Ringu (The Ring) and Gin Gwai (The Eye) are so much better and scarier than the american remakes. The plot is essentially the same of the remake, nothing changes. The girl that has been blind for over 17 years and gets a corneal transplant. After this corneal transplant, she starts getting visions and she's capable to see dead people around her. When she looks for some answers and more information about her eyes' donour, she discovers that she might be the key element to save other people from a tragic death. As I said, a really scary but really entertaining movie. Worth to watch if you ever want to watch a good foreign horror movie.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The scene at the hospital, when she starts getting visions of the people who have died recently there
2. The scene when she's drawing at the table and she sees the lady in the corner and suddenly she jumps in front of her screaming that she's in her seat
3. All the process to identify the situations and future accident
4. The kid with the hat that is always in the hall when she gets to her apartment
5. The old man that is standing in the corner of the elevator facing the wall, and then he starts turning slowly towards her floating in the air

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Nothing... I really enjoyed the plot

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

Movie Review: G-Force

Sunday, October 18, 2009 3 comments

Synopsis: Armed with the latest high-tech spy equipment, a covert team of highly trained guinea pigs discover that the fate of the world is in their paws. Tapped for the G-FORCE are guinea pigs Darwin, the squad leader determined to succeed at all costs; Blaster, an outrageous weapons expert with tons of attitude and a love for all things extreme; and Juarez, a sexy martial arts pro; plus the literal fly-on-the-wall reconnaissance expert Mooch, and a star-nosed mole Speckles, the computer and information specialist.

Starring: Bill Nighy, Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Kelli Garner, Tyler Patrick Jones
Directed by: Hoyt Yeatman
U.S. Rating: PG

A really funny and entertaining kids movie. G-Force brings a fresh mix of a traditional military/special force action movie with the friendly and fun image of Guinea Pigs & Hamsters that are not just well and highly trained, but can talk! G-Force offers a high quality image and effects, with a good plot, it's a great family movie. There's no doubt that kids will love this movie. I've heard and read some critics about this movie, which express that it is a silly and slighly cheezy movie, not counting that it is conceived for kids! Of course it needs to be a silly and cheezy action movie! It's not about Tom Cruise or Vin Diesel, it's about some Guinea Pigs for crying out loud! By the way, the image quality is impressive! These Guinea Pigs look more real than some humans in this movie! Totally recommended!

What did I like from this movie?

1. Really enjoyed the image quality. As said, the Guinea Pigs look more real than humans in this movie!
2. The whole scene with the electronic goods coming to life and fighting against humans and Guinea Pigs, really great effects
3. There were some few funny scenes and comments
4. Definitely, my two top favorite characters in this movie: Agent Mooch (the fly) and the Hamster from the Pet Shop
5. The soundtrack, really good!

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. The voices of Penelope Cruz and Nicolas Cage were not the best for these characters, my personal opinion

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

Movie Review: Gran Torino

Friday, September 25, 2009 1 comments

Synopsis: In Michigan, the grumpy widower Walt Kowalski is a Korean War veteran full of prejudice that has just lost his beloved wife Dorothy. He is one of the last Caucasian Americans in his neighborhood and does not have a good relationship with his sons and their families; therefore he is a lonely man. When his teenager neighbor Thao Vang Lor is pressed by his cousin Smokie to join his Hmong gang, he is assigned to steal the Gran Torino of Walt as part of his initiation in the gang. However he is surprised by the old man and his traditional family feels ashamed with the incident. Later Walt saves Thao first and his sister Sue Lor from gangs and he has the gratitude of his next door neighbors and the neighborhood. On the day of his birthday, Walt is invited by Sue to join her family reunion and he begins a relationship with his neighbors, helping Thao to get a job. However he realizes that the Hmong gang disturbs the neighborhood and after a coward attack of the gangster, Walt decides to take an ultimate attitude.

Starring: Cory Hardrict, Bee Vang, Clint Eastwood, Ahney Her, Brian Haley
Directed by: Clint Eastwood
U.S. Rating: R

This was the first Clint Eastwood movie I have ever seen and let me tell you, he lived up to his "tough-guy" reputation in this film even though he was 78! The beginning of the movie shows quite a few racially shocking comments and attitudes. I gasped quite a few times from the comments of Walt toward his Korean neighbors. I was, however, impressed at how Walt overcame his racial prejudice and befriended his neighbors.

What did I like from this movie?

1. I like the part where Sue sticks up for herself when she is picked on by some guys and Walt come in and saves her
2. It is definitely nice to see Walt make friends with Thao and want to protect him and his family. Even if the guy was tough, he still had love and friendship to give
3. I also liked the part when Walt thinks up the ultimate way of keeping his new friends safe and the way he prepares to see his plan through
4. Although this is a gang related movie, I like that it showed Walt making the ultimate sacrifice for his new friend and rising above his racism

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Walt says a lot of horribly racial things
2. The language was very explicit. I'm supposing the writers wanted bad language to add to Walt's tough-guy persona but I thought it was basically needless on his part. I would understand the gang's use of explicit language but I think they could have made a more intelligent way for Walt to express himself

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: Gone in 60 Seconds

Tuesday, September 22, 2009 1 comments

Synopsis: Randall "Memphis" Raines long ago abandoned his life of crime, but after an ominous visit from an old friend, he finds he has no choice but to return to what he does best--stealing cars--in order to save his brother's life. It all comes down to one night, 50 cars and a mafia contract. A true automobile aficionado, Memphis has a burning passion for cars. He knows and loves every nut and bolt, every gleaming piece of chrome. Memphis is a car thief of legendary proportions. No fancy lock or alarm can stop him; your car will be there and gone in 60 seconds. Though he's always eluded the law while boosting every make and model imaginable, will his rusty skills be enough to rescue his brother from a particularly dangerous high stakes caper?

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Giovanni Ribisi, Angelina Jolie, T. J. Cross, William Lee Scott
Directed by: Dominic Sena, Philip C. Pfeiffer, Dominc Sena
U.S. Rating: PG-13

One of the best movies with Nicolas Cage, no doubt about it! Gone in 60 Seconds is such a great action plot. The script and film offers you a huge doses of adrenaline, speed, great cars, an amazing cast and amazing scenes and situations. I've watched this movie countless times. I always enjoy it, getting the best from every scene and entertaining situations. Randall Reins and his gang were the best in their field, stealing cars. After leaving the city, by request of his mother, Randall needs to come back few years later to save his younger brother, who has decided to follow his older brother's steps. His brother set a deal with a criminal to provide him with 50 stolen cars. The only problem: His brother has been caught by the police and he won't be able to complete the deal. Now his brother needs to care of the deal and deliver 50 stolen cars in one night. Can Randall and his gang make it like in the old times and save his little brother? That's the movie all about! 50 cars, one night. Amazing and entertaining situations and action scenes. 100% Recommended!

What did I like from this movie?

1. I totally enjoyed the amazing cast in this movie. Such a great list of great actors and actresses. Robert Duvall, Nicolas Cage, Delroy Lindo, Angelina Jolie
2. The scene when Randall and his brother escape from the rival gang and hide at the bar where police officers were taking a cup of coffee
3. All the strategy and scenes where the cars were being stolen
4. Obviously, the whole scenes with Eleanor

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. All critics and reviews made on this movie were based on a comparison with the original plot from 1974, trying to take this remake down because it just took part of the original script and scenes

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

Movie Review: Gamer

Saturday, September 19, 2009 2 comments

Synopsis: Set in the near future, a time when mind-control technology has taken society by storm. Humans control other humans in a mass-scale, multiplayer online game. Reclusive billionaire Ken Castle has created the controversial form of entertainment, "Slayers," a hugely popular game that allows millions to act out their innermost desires and fantasies -- online -- in front of a global audience. Gaming has evolved into a terrifying new dimension-mind control-manipulation-people playing people. At the center is Kable, the superstar and cult hero of "Slayers," the savage, ultra-violent first person shooter game. Kable is controlled by Simon, a young gamer with rock star status who continues to defy all odds by guiding Kable to victory each week. Taken from his family, imprisoned and forced to fight against his will, the modern day gladiator must survive long enough to escape the game to free his family, regain his identity and to save mankind from Castle's ruthless technology.

Starring: Gerard Butler, Amber Valletta, Michael C. Hall, Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges, Kyra Sedgwick
Directed by: Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor
U.S. Rating: R

I'm not a gamer at all, I must confess, but I like movies related with games and anything that involves technology (of course, I'm a tech guy!). I felt motivated by the idea of this movie, even though, I thought it would be another prison movie where the good guy needs to kill everyone and break/beat the corrupted system to be free. I wanted to go and watch the movie, no matter all the negative comments and critics I read and heard from friends and movie reviews.

Well, it's not a secret that anyone who watched Crank (and its sequel Crank-High Voltage), wouldn't know what to expect from this movie: Lots and lots of adrenaline, violence, action and some sexual content. The only problem with Gamer is that the idea of the story gets lost in the middle of a futile and inconsistent script, and an unnecessary volume of sexual content that in most of the cases, are not even related with the main idea of the plot.

I must say that I actually enjoyed the first 5 to 10 minutes of the movie, and thought that it would be an interesting movie, but when we get in depth, we immediately detect the lousy and inconsistent material offered.

Gerard Butler, a man accused for a crime that was forced to commit is sentenced to jail and becomes one of the top players in a mind control war game supported by the federal government, where all the players are controlled by rich and powerful people. All the players have to fight in 30 sessions and the winners will obtain freedom (Gladiator style). Kable has become a hero and have got millions of fans and followers worldwide after being only 3 sessions away from the last session and obtain his freedom. The only problem... Ken Castle, the multimillionaire owner and creator of Slayers won't let him succeed. Everything is ok until this moment, the confusion starts when Slayers gets related with a previous live-mind control game called Society (something like SecondLife), where other people controls your social life and actions in real life. They mix all kind of weird and boring material, like rave parties, an unnecessary volume of sexual content and inconsistent scenes.

If you love computer games, love action and don't mind a few nonsense situations and content then, this movie will interest you!

What did I like from this movie?

1. The action scenes, especially the first 10 minutes are worth to watch
2. Some good effects and the basic idea could be considered interesting

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. As I've said, I can't understand the reason of such unnecessary level of sexual content (flash images) that in most of the cases had no relation with the scene or situation. It was like, too much, to the point of getting bored of it
2. Amber Valletta, I consider her a really good actress but in this movie she played a really poor and lousy role
3. The fat guy that controlled Amber's mind... so disgusting!
4. The dancing with Ken Castle scene when Kable gets to Castle's site. So ridiculous!
5. The very end of the movie, so lame. The nerds and IT guys just walking out of the room like nothing happened and Kable saying "shut it down"

I would rate this movie with a 1/5

Movie Review: Grease

Saturday, September 12, 2009 2 comments

Synopsis: Danny Zuko, leader of the greaser gang "T-Birds" of Rydell High, falls in love with a goody two shoes girl named Sandy Olsen over the summer. They thought she'd be leaving and never see each other again, but to their luck...she begins to attend Rydell High. She is immediately accepted into the group "Pink Ladies" and shortly Danny and her re-meet. Danny has seemed to have changed but in the hopes of winning Sandy back, he changes into the loving, jock Danny Zuko that Sandy met during the summer permanently.

Starring: John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway, Didi Conn
Directed by: Randal Kleiser
U.S. Rating: PG

I'm a loyal fan of John Travolta's movies. It doesn't matter the plot, if John Travolta is in it, I know it will be a really good movie. In this case, I grew up with Saturday Night Live and Grease in my life, since even though I was just a little kid, my brother was a young man and was all into these movies. So I not just ha to hear the Bee Gees, but also, all the songs from Grease with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. I believe this is one of the first teen musicals that marked the path for many other teen musicals up to our days. John Travolta makes me laugh all the time I see him in these movies, just because it brings me memories of my brother and old his friends and girlfriends, totally involved in the fashion and style expressed in these movies. Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta play such a really entertaining musical plot, totally recommended.

What did I like from this movie?

1. First of all, I'm glad John Travolta moved forward and was able to get involved in so many other different roles, since he was kind of stuck in these musical plots in the late 70's. Today, I consider him one of the best Hollywood actors
2. All their moves! Really entertaining and funny, besides the good music played in this movie

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. I think Olivia Newton-John didn't explode the fame received from this movie, just like John Travolta, being such a beautiful and talented woman

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: Girls! Girls! Girls!

Friday, September 11, 2009 3 comments

Synopsis: Elvis plays Ross Carpenter, a fishing guide/sailor who loves his life out on the sea. When he finds out his boss is retiring to Arizona, he has to find a way to buy the Westwind, a boat that he and his father built. He is also caught between two women: insensitive club singer Robin and sweet Laurel.

Starring: Elvis Presley, Stella Stevens, Laurel Goodwin, Jeremy Slate, Guy Lee
Directed by: Norman Taurog
U.S. Rating: PG

I'm not into old movies, at all! But I am a huge Elvis' fan. Elvis movies, even though are old musical movies, they're always fresh and interesting to watch. Girls! Girls! Girls! is one of those movies where you can enjoy not just a good plot, great music, but a good cast. I totally recommend this old classic to anyone that wants to enjoy some good old Elvis' songs.

What did I like from this movie?

1. Definitely Elvis' songs. Being a fan of his music work, it is always good to hear some old songs from the king
2. Even though is an old musical movie, it brings a fresh plot, entertaining at any time of the day

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Nothing, it was really entertaining for such an old classic

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Synopsis: Sam and Molly are a very happy couple and deeply in love. Walking back to their new apartment after a night out at the theater, they encounter a thief in a dark alley, and Sam is murdered. He finds himself trapped as a ghost and realizes that his death was no accident. He must warn Molly about the danger that she is in. But as a ghost he can not be seen or heard by the living, and so he tries to communicate with Molly through Oda Mae Brown, a psychic who didn't even realise that her powers were real.

Starring: Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Goldwyn, Stanley Lawrence
Directed by: Jerry Zucker, Steven Charles Jaffe
U.S. Rating: PG-13

One of the classics that everyone should watch. Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore worked the perfect match for this movie, with the great role of Whoopi Goldberg as the semi-phony spiritualist. I never watched it on the big screen, I watched it months later, when it came to VHS (oh my!) . I didn't feel motivated to go to the theaters, no matter the great comments and critics heard about this one. When I saw the movie for the first time I could understand why it has been considered one of the mega-blockbusters of all times. The plot and romantic scenes are the perfect combination for a date night, no matter how many times you've watched this movie. Even though Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore were the perfect couple for this story, I personally believe Whoopi Goldberg stole the show with her supporting role. No wonder why this movie was nominated to the Oscar that year and reached two statues that night! A classic 100% recommended.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The scenes at the subway with the Subway Lord. The crazy old man plays such a really good role there
2. The scene when Swayze meets Ghoopi and talks with her. Such a funny moment, she's being a phony spiritualist, but the truth is that she had that gift
3. the scene when Swayze goes back to Ghoopi's room and finds her surrounded by dozens of dead people trying to talk with her
4. Of course, the trademark scene... the romantic scene when they're on their room playing with the vase

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Well, if you watch this movie today, you might find some crappy CGI effects, but knowing that it was 1990, it was ok for the technology at that time

I would rate this movie with a 5/5

Synopsis: Percy Jones takes great pride in the knowledge that he is always right, especially when it comes to the welfare of his family. When his daughter Theresa brings her new boyfriend, Simon Green, home to meet Percy and his wife Marilyn, he is unaware that Simon has already proposed to Theresa and plans to announce the engagement at Percy and Marilyn's 25th anniversary party. As far as Percy's concerned, no man will ever be good enough for his baby girl and the long line of struggling-artist types Theresa has dated so far has only served to bolster his conviction. So that there are no unpleasant surprises this time around, Percy, a bank loan officer, runs a credit check on Simon. The young man, a successful stockbroker, certainly looks good on paper, and for the first time, Percy is actually looking forward to meeting one of his daughter's boyfriends. However, the young man he has envisioned--a dazzling combination of Denzel Washington, Colin Powell and Tiger Woods--is not who arrives at his doorstep. Percy is aghast and more than a little indignant when his daughter presents her decidedly Caucasian boyfriend. Once he is over his initial shock, Percy begins interrogating Simon about his family history, education, career, and favorite sports. Feeling pressured to impress his prospective father-in-law, Simon boasts of his (nonexistent) past as a NASCAR driver, which only serves to arouse Percy's suspicions. Regardless, Simon's repeated attempts to make a good impression are futile. Percy rebuffs him at every turn and makes it his mission to expose Simon as a fraud and undermine his daughter's new relationship.

Starring: Bernie Mac, Ashton Kutcher, Zoe Saldana, Judith Scott, Hal Williams
Directed by: Kevin Rodney Sullivan, Kevin Rodney
U.S. Rating: PG-13

I'd consider this movie the racial version of Meet the Parents. Both movies are really funny, and both of them are the same kind of plot. The baby girl loved and protected by her dad, who tries to keep every single man away from her, bringing a set of different and funny situations between the future son-in-law, daughter and rest of the family. In this movie, Bernie Mac (a black guy) doesn't trust his new daughter's boyfriend who is a white guy. From the beginning, we face some really funny scenes and situations that will keep you entertained. Bernie Mac plays such a really funny role in this movie, as the protective father who expects to have a handsome, tall, athlete, successful black son-in-law. When he faces reality, he starts trying to keep him away from his daughter and even lies about him to his co-workers, describing Kutcher as Jamal, the handsome, tall, athlete, successful black son-in-law. Ashton Kutcher, well, my wife loves him, but I believe he plays a foolish role in this movie, balanced by Zoe Saldana's part who plays a more serious down-to-earth role in this movie.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The scene when they arrive to Bernie's house and he shakes hands and welcome the taxi driver (the black guy) thinking that he's his son-in-law and asks Kutcher to bring the luggage into the house
2. When Bernie Mac gets to the basement on the first night at home and Kutcher gets in bed thinking that Bernie is leaving the room, but he turns the light off and gets in bed with him
3. The whole scene situation with Bernie's wife and her sisters, such a great black women reunion
4. The grandpa and the whole situation at the dinner table, with the jokes about black people, especially when he asks for Kutcher's grandmother's address after his comment about her joke

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. There were scenes or part of this plot that should have more information. For example, nobody knows what happens with Kutcher's job or future at the end of the movie, they just know his present unemployed situation. If they started the movie with his resignation, if it was part of the whole discussion on this plot, why didn't they include a conclusion about it?
2. The whole thing about the $50000, it looked like just a part of the plot that had no connection with anything else, came from nowhere and they tried to tie it with a short scene trying to get a loan from his new father-in-law

I would rate this movie with a 3/5
