Movie Review: Gin Gwai (The Eye)

Thursday, October 29, 2009
Synopsis: At the age of two, Wong Kar Mun went blind. Eighteen years later a new and risky corneal transplant operation restores her vision, but a series of inexplicable events leads her to believe there is much more than meets the eye to her newfound gift of sight. Mysterious black-clad figures seem to foreshadow sudden deaths, and horribly disfigured denizens of another side haunt her everyday existence. Unable to define her own identity, she comes to understand that whenever she looks into a mirror she doesn't see herself but instead sees another woman: Ling, the original owner of the corneas. It seems that Mun has inherited Ling's fate and the misery that comes with the ability to see more than what she wants to behold.

Freaky and scary! Gin Gwai is simply the original version of the movie "The Eye" played by Jessica Alba. I believe that Hollywood has to learn so much about horror movies from the japanese horror writers. Movies like Ringu (The Ring) and Gin Gwai (The Eye) are so much better and scarier than the american remakes. The plot is essentially the same of the remake, nothing changes. The girl that has been blind for over 17 years and gets a corneal transplant. After this corneal transplant, she starts getting visions and she's capable to see dead people around her. When she looks for some answers and more information about her eyes' donour, she discovers that she might be the key element to save other people from a tragic death. As I said, a really scary but really entertaining movie. Worth to watch if you ever want to watch a good foreign horror movie.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The scene at the hospital, when she starts getting visions of the people who have died recently there
2. The scene when she's drawing at the table and she sees the lady in the corner and suddenly she jumps in front of her screaming that she's in her seat
3. All the process to identify the situations and future accident
4. The kid with the hat that is always in the hall when she gets to her apartment
5. The old man that is standing in the corner of the elevator facing the wall, and then he starts turning slowly towards her floating in the air

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Nothing... I really enjoyed the plot
