Sunday, November 6, 2011 0 comments

Synopsis: Nick is a small town pizza delivery guy whose mundane life collides with the big plans of two wanna-be criminal masterminds. The volatile duo kidnaps Nick and forces him to rob a bank. With mere hours to pull off the impossible task, Nick enlists the help of his ex-best friend, Chet. As the clock ticks, the two must deal with the police, hired assassins, flamethrowers, and their own tumultuous relationship.
Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride, Aziz Ansari, Nick Swardson, Dilshad Vadsaria
Directed by: Ruben Fleischer
U.S. Rating: R

Considered by many movie bloggers out there as one of the best (if not the best) Summer comedy films for the year. I must be honest that I was sold when I saw the trailer for the first time, even though, I knew it could have its risks. Comedy films like this one always tent to move to the improvised and distracting scenes that will finally get the whole film down the hill.

The story is pretty simple, not a brain-breaker script and as we know, the cast made the big effort and difference on this comedy. Jesse Eisenberg breaks one more time into the comedy genre, doing pretty good, Danny McBride and Nick Swardson worked in their comfort zone, playing the kind of role we always see them playing and Aziz Ansari, one of those new generation comedy actors that I believe has been playing low-level roles in actually, pretty good and hilarious movies! I hope he gets more attention and bigger opportunities in the near future, since he looks hilarious!

What's 30 Minutes or Less about? Here's the plot:

Nick is a slacking pizza delivery driver who has trouble completing the "30 Minutes or Less" policy that his employers issue, leading to a reprimand from his boss. Nick's friend Chet, a school teacher, discovers that Nick has slept with, and still has feelings for, Chet's twin sister Katie. It is also revealed that Chet was the reason Nick's parents divorced. After a heated argument, the two end their friendship.

Meanwhile, two delinquents, Dwayne and Travis are miserable living under the shadow of Dwayne's domineering father. Dwayne confides in a stripper, Juici, about his contempt for his dad, who is squandering the money that he won playing the lottery. Juici says she can hire an assassin to kill Dwayne's dad for $100,000 so Dwayne can collect the inheritance. Dwayne plots that they kidnap a complete stranger and force him to rob a bank for the hit money by strapping a bomb to his chest. After seeing an advertisement for the pizzeria that Nick works at, they order a pizza and wait for the driver to come to their hideout. When Nick arrives, Dwayne and Travis assault him and knock him unconscious.

When Nick wakes up, he finds a vest rigged with explosives strapped and buckled onto his torso. Dwayne and Travis, wearing masks, tell him his situation: if he does not rob a bank in ten hours, they will detonate the bomb. Going to the police will also result in them detonating the bomb, as they will be monitoring him most of the time. Nick, in his panic, goes to a school where Chet is working and desperately pleads with him to help. After plans to deactivate or remove the bomb are dashed, Chet says he has no choice but to rob the bank. Still uneasy, Nick asks Chet to assist him. Chet reluctantly agrees.

After purchasing supplies for the robbery, Nick suggests stealing Chet's family friend's car so that the police will be unable to track the license plate number of Nick's own car. Nick then stops by his workplace to tell off his boss and to go see Katie and say some final words to her. Nick and Chet later arrive at the bank, hold it up, and obtain the money. However, an employee pulls the alarm, forcing Nick and Chet to flee. After a car chase that ends up with Nick and Chet crashing their car, the two successfully evade capture by sneaking onto a bus. Nick calls Dwayne and tells him he has the money. Dwayne says he and Travis will meet him at an abandoned railyard to make the exchange. Dwayne and Travis go to a restaurant instead. When Dwayne asks Travis to possibly be the one to detonate the bomb if the time comes, Travis starts to become unsettled.

After getting his old car, Nick waits for Dwayne and Travis at the railyard while Chet hides somewhere to avoid a confrontation about his involvement in the scheme. Instead of Dwayne or Travis, however, Juici and the assassin, Chongo, are the ones who arrive to pick up the money. Nick hands Chongo the money and expects Chongo to give him the code which will deactivate the bomb. Chongo claims he doesn't know what the code is. When Nick keeps asking him for the code, Chongo gets aggravated and holds Nick at gunpoint. Chet runs in and beats Chongo while Nick incapacitates Juici. The two grab the money and escape.

Dwayne ends up getting two phone calls: one from Chongo calling to let Dwayne know that because of Chet's ambush, he will be killing Dwayne also. The second is from Nick, who berates Dwayne for not giving Chongo the code to the bomb and dares him to detonate the bomb with the money at his side. Overly frustrated by these turn of events, Dwayne activates the speed dial number on his phone for the bomb to explode, but finds that Travis altered the numbers while Dwayne wasn't looking because he was getting nervous about Dwayne's gradually violent attitude. The two head back to Katie's apartment and kidnap her. Dwayne calls Nick to let him know that he has Katie and if he doesn't meet at the scrapyard to give him the money, he'll kill her. Meanwhile, Chongo breaks into Dwayne's dad's house to find information regarding Dwayne's location and finds a hand drawn map to the scrapyard. While there, Dwayne's father attacks him and is shot after a struggle.

Nick arrives at the scrapyard and exchanges the money for Katie. Dwayne also gives Nick the code to deactivate and unbuckle the bomb with minutes to spare. Dwayne then tells Nick to walk away, but Nick deduces that as soon as Nick and Katie turn around, they will just kill them both. Dwayne confirms this by pointing a gun at them while Travis comes out wielding a flamethrower. Nick says he hired a sniper in case this were to happen. This is proved to be fake as it is only Chet who's using a laser pointer, but it's enough to fool Dwayne and Travis into lowering their weapons. Chongo arrives shortly after to kill Dwayne. Travis responds by torching Chongo with the flamethrower. Although burning to death, Chongo manages to shoot Dwayne and shoot the fuel tank for the flamethrower, causing it to explode on Travis's back. In the confusion, Nick grabs the money and drives away with Chet and Katie. Dwayne, still alive, reconciles with Travis then catches up to the others with his van, but he hears a beeping sound in the back, and the van explodes. Nick reveals that as he grabbed the money, he reactivated the bomb and threw it in the back of the van. Now free with the money in their possession, the three drive off discussing what to do with their newly acquired windfall, but discover that the money has been rigged with blue dye, rendering it useless.

After the credits showed that Dwayne and his father had survived and Dwayne had started his tanning salon business.

Movie Review: 300

Friday, December 25, 2009 1 comments

Synopsis: In the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy.

Starring: Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Michael Fassbender, Vincent Regan, Dominic West
Directed by: Zack Snyder
U.S. Rating: R

The film is all about a group of 300 Spartan soldiers fighting for their families and freedom against the Persian King Xerxes and his army of 1 million soldiers. The film is an adaptation of the novel written by Frank Miller, who also wrote and directed Sin City and The Spirit. The best offered by this film is the amazing CGI effects and all the computerized sets where all the battles take place. Battles take more than 70% of the film, so it means that the film is all about the titanic battles between this strong, well-trained and motivated group of soldiers followed by Leonidas, the Spartan King (Gerard Butler) and this huge Persian army with more than 1 million soldiers. I could say that it is Gerard Butler's best action performance so far! The plot doesn't have much to offer, it is all about the graphic battles and all the CGI applied throughout all the film. A very colorful film, not just in its graphics, but the violent images on every battle. No matter how simple the plot might be, or how violent it is in some of its images, it is actually a really good and enjoyable action/war film.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The CGI and quality of the images are excellent!
2. Even though the plot is pretty basic, it is totally enjoyable, since there's a balance. The graphics and visual content makes it really enjoyable

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Being a film written & produced by Frank Miller (who also worked on Sin City and The Spirit) and directed by Zack Snyder (who also worked with films like Watchmen), makes it easy to understand the reason of the kind of plot, bloody violence and grotesc situations and fictional charaters

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: 2012

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 2 comments

Synopsis: Never before has a date in history been so significant to so many cultures, so many religions, scientists, and governments. A global cataclysm brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors.

Starring: John Cusack, Chjwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt
Directed by: Roland Emmerich
U.S. Rating: PG-13

I don't know if someone else noticed a huge similarity between 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow. I know both movies have been directed by Rolan Emmerich, but the plot about the group of scientists who have been trying to warn governments and people about the possible natural apocalypse that is about to happen due to global warming and they're not being heard, then something happens and we're at the very edge of global destruction and death and the lead scientist is taken to talk directly to the president of the U.S. even though it might be too late. Both stories face this same similarity, but being honest, both movies had their own amazing CGI effects and unique plot. 2012 offers not just a pretty entertaining plot, maybe not too credible or too real, but really entertaining! It doesn't matter if you're not into these kind of plots, what I totally believe is that the amazing CGI effects makes this movie SO worth to watch. Some events happen in this film (let's call them subplots) that leave people a bit confused, since they don't seem to be related with the story, but we can get at least, part of the response to these events at the end of the film (ex: The guy who's killed in Paris, after replacing some fine art in the Louvre). Definitely one of the greatest movie this year, mainly for the action and intense suspense involved in all the destruction and CGI effects.

What did I like from this movie?

1. No doubt that the best thing offered in this movie is the huge amount of amazing and professional CGI work, especially during the destruction scenes. For example, the destruction at the Yellowstone Park, at the Vegas - Nevada Airport, at the supermarket, Brazil and the moment when they're inside the ships
2. Woody Harrelson's role was perfect for him. A weird role for a weird man, the perfect match! So hilarious!
3. The intense suspense and emotions offered throughout all the destruction and situations that John Cusack has to face with his family to be safe and survive to these natural events

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. there were few crazy and nonsense situations. For example, how can you talk by a mobile phone at the end of the movie when everything is destroyed around the world, including communication towers (when the Indian scientist calls John Cusack to tell him that noone went to pick them up) !
2. Besides Bentley, I believe that Converse was one of the marketing supporters of this movie. So funny to see the monks at the end of the movie, when they're leaving the ships, walking with Converse shoes... all of them!

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

Movie Review: 28 Days

Saturday, September 26, 2009 2 comments

Synopsis: Gwen Cummings is a successful New York writer living life in the fast lane and everyone's favorite party girl. She shares this roller-coaster lifestyle of hopping from dance club to bar to hangover with boyfriend Jasper--handsome, magnetic and equally attracted to life on the wild side. Life is just an execise in debauchery--until Gwen's ungraceful display at her sister Lily's wedding, when she gets drunk, commandeers the limo and earns herself a DUI and 28-days in court ordered rehab. There Gwen comes face to face with a unique set of rules (like no cell phones) and rituals (like chanting) embraced by an assortment of fascinating fellow re-habbers. A jaded city-girl to the core, Gwen is determined not to conform. Then she meets Counselor Cornell, who begins to break through her carefully constructed defenses and force her to take a closer look herself Ultimately, through the companionship of her group as well as a devastating loss, Gwen gradually begins the long struggle to take back her life.

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Viggo Mortensen, Dominic West, Elizabeth Perkins, Azura Skye
Directed by: Betty Thomas
U.S. Rating: PG-13

Excellent movie. Not just because I really love Sandra Bullock, but because it offered a great cast and an interesting plot. When I say interesting, I could mean interesting, but not good enough for Bullock's performance, she deserved a more intense and complete script in this story to match her great performance. Sandra Bullock brought to the screen a great drama with her role as a drug/drink addict who has been forced to get into rehab to take control of her life and addiction. What happens in those 28 days of rehab, the experiences, the feelings, the people, the things she has to face will change her life forever. A really good movie drama that I personally recommend to watch.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The gay guy is hilarious! First, the moment when they're in their therapy and he's trying to express his feelings while he's crying, and then, when he's out and he's crying about the flower and his dog, hopeless!
2. It was the first movie I saw Sandra Bullock with short hair, and she looked really cute in that movie!
3. The big changes she took in her life, step by step, and how she influenced other people's lives there too

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. She doesn't do a really good job performing as a drunk woman, it looked fake :)
2. The script wasn't as good as it could have been to match Bullock's great performance

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: 500 Days of Summer

Saturday, September 12, 2009 2 comments

Synopsis: Tom believes, even in this cynical modern world, in the notion of a transforming, cosmically destined, lightning-strikes-once kind of love. Summer doesn't. Not at all. But that doesn't stop Tom from going after her, again and again, like a modern Don Quixote, with all his might and courage. Suddenly, Tom is in love not just with a lovely, witty, intelligent woman -- but with the very idea of Summer, the very idea of a love that still has the power to shock the heart and stop the world. The fuse is lit on Day 1 when Tom, a would-be architect turned sappy greeting card writer, encounters Summer, his boss's breezy, beautiful new secretary, fresh off the plane from Michigan. Though seemingly out of his league, Tom soon discovers he shares plenty in common with Summer. By Day 31, things are moving ahead, albeit "casually." By Day 32, Tom is irreparably smitten, living in a giddy, fantastical world of Summer on his mind. By Day 185, things are in serious limbo -- but not without hope. And as the story winds backwards and forwards through Tom and Summer's on-again, off-again, sometimes blissful, often tumultuous dalliance -- all of which adds up to a kaleidoscopic portrait of why, and how, we still struggle so laughably, cringingly hard to make sense of love and to hopefully make it real.

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel, Geoffrey Arend, Chloe Grace Moretz, Matthew Gray Gubler
Directed by: Marc Webb
U.S. Rating: PG-13

Just had the chance to watch this movie and I must say that one of the best quotes in this movie is the one at the very beginning: "This is not a love movie". I think most of us don't pay attention to this quote, but that's what the movie is all about! I totally enjoyed it, even though, the end of the movie wouldn't offer you what you might expect. Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is the hard worker, dreamer and romantic guy that believes in love, its force and everything involved with it. In the other hand, Summer (Zooey Deschanel) is the smart girl who likes things simple and doesn't believe in love, its force and everything involved in it the way Tom believes it. A total romantic comedy that brings a different plot for what we normally expect from these kind of stories. The plot brings the whole process of this romantic story from day 1 to day 500, giving some twist to the chronological order, which makes it interesting and entertaining. Worth to watch.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The soundtrack from this movie is really great
2. The way the director focus the story, jumping forward and backwards in the story of Tom and Summer, it helped to keep the interest and intrigue on the story
3. The funny scene whe the little sister comes to the rescue, giving him the tips and advises from a woman's point of view
4. The way how the plot shows the real personality of both roles, especially Summer's role. Even though she might have screwed Tom's love story, you actually don't hate her :)
5. The scene at the bar when they're enjoying the karaoke night, kinda of entertaining

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Of course, the end is not what you expect from this guy efforts, but once again, remember the quote: "This is not a love story"

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Synopsis: Matt Sullivan's last big relationship ended in disaster and ever since his heart's been aching and his commitment's been lacking. Then came Lent, that time of year when everybody gives something up. That's when Matt, a guy who's never been able to finish anything, decides to go where no man's gone before and make a vow: No sex. Whatsoever for 40 straight days. No touching. No kissing. No foreplay. No fooling around. No self-gratification. No nothing. At first he has everything under control. That is until the woman of his dreams, Erica, walks into his life. Sexy and spirited, Erica drives Matt wild. Now, with everyone betting he won't finish what he started, he's just trying to hold on, and hoping she's willing to hold out...

Starring: Josh Hartnett, Shannyn Sossamon, Vinessa Shaw, Paulo Costanzo, Griffin Dunne
Directed by: Michael Lehmann
U.S. Rating: R

After a huge success with Oscar winning award movies like Pearl Harbor & Black Hawk Down, such amazing action and drama movies, Josh Hartnett came to the big screen with this romantic comedy... 40 Days and 40 Nights. I actually enjoyed the first time I watched this movie, I remember I went with a bunch of co-workers had some good laughs and good time watching this movie. I believe that being with all my friends helped it to be a good time and movie. It was a fun movie, but it was one of those movies that promotes their best scenes on their trailers. So, I felt I just laughed over those scenes that I already knew and watched few times before on its promotional trailers. I liked Shannyn Sossamon in this movie. She looked like a great promise as a sweetheart and romantic actress, after being part of great movies like A Knight's Tale and The Rules of Attraction. I don't know what's happened, but I haven't seen her again in good movies and roles. Josh Hartnett is a good actor, but honestly, I see him playing good action, drama movies, since the plot of this movie was funny, but a little cheesy for my taste.

What did I like from this movie?

1. One of the funny parts in this movie was the whole bets and gambling situation about the abstinence commitment.
2. It was kinda funny that his brother was the priest who should give him some advise, but at the end, he falls into temptation because of his brother's stories.
3. The romantic part was ok. I mean, the whole "save yourself for the right one" and showing you that you can actually have a healthy love relationship before marriage without the need of sex.

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Let's be honest... we all know that we men love women, but this whole "desperate for sex" situation is not as it seems in this movie.
2. As said before, I couldn't see Josh Hartnett as a comedy actor, but as a drama or action kinda movie actor.

I would rate this movie with a 3/5
