Movie Review: Brothers

Sunday, January 31, 2010 0 comments

Synopsis: Thirty-something Captain Sam Cahill and his younger brother Tommy Cahill, are polar opposites. A Marine about to embark on his fourth tour of duty, Sam is a steadfast family man married to his high school sweetheart, the aptly named Grace, with whom he has two young daughters. Tommy, his charismatic younger brother, is a drifter just out of jail who's always gotten by on wit and charm. He slides easily into his role as family provocateur on his first night out of prison, at Sam's farewell dinner with their parents, Elsie and Hank Cahill, a retired Marine. Shipped out to Afghanistan, Sam is presumed dead when his Black Hawk helicopter is shot down in the mountains. At home in suburbia, the Cahill family suddenly faces a shocking void, and Tommy tries to fill in for his brother by assuming newfound responsibility for himself, Grace, and the children.

Starring: Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, Sam Shepard, Mare Winningham
Directed by: Jim Sheridan
U.S. Rating: R

I could define Brothers as a film of few meaningful drama moments and events. The plot is about the drama, relationship and situations lived by Grace Cahill (Natalie Portman), Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire), when Captain Sam Cahill is sent to Afghanistan and he's presumed dead after the Black Hawk he was flying in was shot down in the middle of the Afghan dessert. Tommy Cahill, Sam's brother has got out of jail and he's tried to take care of his sister in law, Grace, and his two little nieces. Tommy starts falling in love with Grace, they try to draw a line of respect and distance, due to the recent events and feelings involved in it. When Sam is found by soldiers during an assault to one of the rebels' secret caves, Sam is sent back home. Sam gets home with more than his luggage, he's back with a series of deep and hurtful feelings, images and experiences lived during his time being captive. Soon, he lets all these emotions, feelings and horrible experiences to come out and affect his life and relation with his wife, daughters, brother and family.

A great cast selected for this film, even though, I wasn't pleased with Tobey Maguire's performance. Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal were great on their roles, but Tobey Maguire was a bit over the top on some of his scenes.

What did I like from this movie?

1. A good drama involved in the plot
2. great roles played by the cast

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. The movie offers good "drama moments". I wouldn't say it is a good drama film as a whole
2. Tobey Maguire's performance was over the top on his emotions and drama on a few scenes

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: Invictus

Saturday, January 30, 2010 0 comments

Synopsis: The true story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the captain of South Africa's rugby team, Francois Pienaar, to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa's underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.

Starring: Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, Marguerite Wheatley, Tony Kgoroge, Patrick Mofokeng
Directed by: Clint Eastwood
U.S. Rating: PG-13

Invictus was one of the most expect movies I really wanted to watch this month. As soon as I watched the trailer for the first time, I knew it had material to be an amazing and inspiring story, plus, one of the great options for the Gloden Globes and Oscars. One of the best of the film was the great cast involved. Having two Oscar winners leading the film (Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon), I couldn't expect less than an amazing performance. I wasn't disappointed, the cast performance made the day and brought a genuine drama to the film. Morgan Freeman looked SO real, I think that if he didn't look taller than Nelson Mandela in real life, I could actually believe that Morgan Freeman was Nelson Mandela. Being directed by one of the best actors and directors in Hollywood (and one of my top favorites), Clint Eastwood nailed it again, bringing the drama of one of the most inspiring men in modern history, Nelson Mandela.

The plot centers on the story of Nelson mandela, newly elected president of South Africa who took advantage of one of the most expected and exciting events to be hosted in his country, the Rugby World Cup, to reunite his people and fight the racial and economical differences created by the apartheid. He's able to use this event to motive and inspire his people and overcome their differences. He worked personally on finding the right person to lead his team and let him know the big responsibility he had. An inspiring series of events that led the team and nation to win the World Cup and overcome their fears, feelings of hatred, racial and economical differences.

A truly inspiring film based on a true story, played by an amazing cast and directed by one of the best directors in Hollywood. Totally recommended!

What did I like from this movie?

1. The cast selected was the best for the film. Morgan Freeman looked alike Nelson Mandela!
2. Clint Eastwood directed the film with a really good eye on the events involved in this true story
3. I really enjoy plots based on true stories, especially when they're based on political & sport events

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. There were only two things that I didn't like from this film: The first one, the plot could have offered so, but so much more drama and content. There were so many different events and inspiring situations, that it could have offered more drama to the audience
2. I didn't feel chemistry and real drama, inspiration and motivation among the Rugby team. In fact, I didn't feel any emotions at all in a few scenes!

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

Movie Review: U.S. Marshals

Tuesday, January 26, 2010 0 comments

Synopsis: U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard and his street-smart deputies pursue Sheridan, a new fugitive who is accused of two New York assassinations. Aiding Gerard is a cocky young government operative who proves to be a match for Gerard's tactical and intellectual strengths.

Starring: Tommy Lee Jones, Wesley Snipes, Robert Downey Jr., Joe Pantoliano, Daniel Roebuck
Directed by: Stuart Baird, Gary Davis
U.S. Rating: PG-13

I should state that this film is worth to watch for Tommy Lee Jones' lead performance. Even though it offers such an amazing cast, the script was simply ok. It was able to deliver some action and suspense, but I couldn't feel that special chemistry among the lead characters (Tommy Lee Jones, Wesley Snipes & Robert Downey Jr).

I could say that it is a variant of the film The Fugitive. Mark Sheridan (Wesley Snipes) is a special agent who's been framed in a confusing incident, accused of killing two asian diplomatic members. After facing an accident, Mark Sheridan is able to escape and have the chance to find, identify and caught the responsibles of the two homicides. On the other hand, Chief Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones), responsible for Mark Sheridan's custody does whatever it takes to caught him and put him in jail. He gets federal assistance with the company of agent John Royce (Robert Downey Jr) who is involved in the confusing incident, trying to get to Mark before Marshal Gerard does and, if possible... kill Mark.

As said, the film is worth to watch due to Tommy Lee Jones performance. It can be highly considered for an action movie on a quiet weekend at home.

What did I like from this movie?

1. Great cast involved. The cast saved the day, since the plot didn't offer much to the audience

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. I didn't feel that chemistry needed among the lead roles. That might be the reason that Tommy Lee Jones darkened the rest of the cast involved in this film

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: The Stepfather

Monday, January 25, 2010 0 comments

Synopsis: When troubled teen Michael returns home after a year at military school, he finds his mother, Susan, in love and his soon-to-be stepfather, David, has moved into their home. David says he wants them to become the perfect family. But as they get to know each other, Michael quickly becomes convinced that David himself is far from perfect. Trying to verify what he knows of David's past, Michael finds things that don't add up. As strange events and David's bursts of malevolence become more frequent, Michael tells his mother and girlfriend of his suspicions, but they just think he's being paranoid. Eventually, as Michael searches for proof that his suspicions are well-founded, cracks begin to show in David's perfect fade and it becomes apparent he will stop at nothing to keep his secrets. For David has a history of trying to create the perfect family. And each time, when it becomes apparent that perfection is impossible, David has a terrifying way of clearing the slate and starting over.

Starring: Dylan Walsh, Sela Ward, Penn Badgley, Amber Heard, Sherry Stringfield
Directed by: Nelson McCormick
U.S. Rating: PG-13

This re-make of Joseph Ruben’s 1987 suspense film was not as good as the original one, but it was totally entertaining though. The plot was pretty simple and showing some holes or gaps, but I must say that everyone involved in this film played their roles greatly and it actually made the difference. There were lots of action-suspense moments throughout the film that will keep you entertained. Most of the critics and reviews have merged in two important details: The plot wasn't strong enough, with so many loosed knots and with a very predictable end. I totally agree with their critics to the plot, but I think that the very last scene at the end of the film was totally unexpected, no matter how predictable was the hole ending fight and situation with the family.

If you're looking for an entertaining mild suspense-thriller film to watch on a quiet weekend night, you can rely on this one as one of your options.

What did I like from this movie?

1. I enjoyed the way the cast played their roles, it helped the simple plot to be more enjoyable that it actually was
2. Yes, Sela Ward is one of those few "beautiful and elegant" women I really like from Hollywood

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. the plot was pretty simple and with many gaps

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: Sherlock Holmes

Sunday, January 24, 2010 2 comments

Synopsis: Robert Downey Jr. brings the legendary detective to life as he has never been portrayed before. Jude Law stars as Holmes' trusted colleague, Watson, a doctor and war veteran who is a formidable ally for Sherlock Holmes. Rachel McAdams stars as Irene Adler, the only woman ever to have bested Holmes and who has maintained a tempestuous relationship with the detective. Mark Strong stars as their mysterious new adversary, Blackwood. Kelly Reilly will play Watson's love interest, Mary.

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Eddie Marsan
Directed by: Guy Ritchie
U.S. Rating: PG-13

We should start saying that the key success on this film was the chemistry among the lead characters. Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law and Rachel McAdams played brilliant roles with such chemistry that made the film so worth to watch. Even though Sherlock Holmes has been categorized as an action-suspense-thriller film, we can't take seriosly Rober Downey Jr's version of Sherlock Holmes. He played the lead role with such a spontaneous comedy and crazyness that made Jude Law (Dr. Watson) look like the real smart and mature detective on this story. An action junkie, fight lover, and extremely focused on details, this new version Sherlock Holmes brings two hours of action, suspense and lots of good laughs. The plot is entertaining, with no gaps, the story let them work the idea of an immediate sequel, as it is actually happening at this moment :)

Sherlock Holmes is a film that either on the big screen, DVD or Blu-Ray will offer you such an amazing entertaining time. Totally recommended!

What did I like from this movie?

1. The plot. It was easy to be followed, so entertaining
2. The chemistry among the lead roles was amazing!
3. Great CGI effects

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Nothing at all

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

Movie Review: All About Steve

Saturday, January 23, 2010 2 comments

Synopsis: Mary Horowitz is a cruciverbalist - a crossword puzzle constructor. Her brain spins at warp speed with an endless stream of arcane information. She can come up with the perfect word - and dozens with the same meaning - at a moment's notice, but "normal" behavior eludes her. For Mary, nothing is typical, especially relationships. When she is set up on a blind date with handsome cable-news cameraman Steve, Mary thinks the chemistry is undeniable - that Steve is "the one." Steve, on the other hand, thinks Mary is crazy. Mary, who just knows she's found her soul mate, decides to do anything and go anywhere to be with him. She begins to pursue Steve relentlessly as he crisscrosses the country, covering breaking news stories. Mary's escalating infatuation with Steve is encouraged by the self-serving actions of news reporter Hartman Hughes, who enjoys torturing his insolent cameraman at every opportunity. With Mary never far behind and Hartman urging her on, Steve becomes increasingly unhinged. But when Mary becomes embroiled in the news story of the year, Steve and Hartman begin to see her differently. Hartman is plagued by guilt, knowing his game of one-upmanship with Steve has placed her squarely in harms way, while Steve is feeling his own pangs of remorse at his callous behavior. Despite the media storm surrounding her, Mary with her upbeat, unaffected manner brings together a small community of new friends. And all who encounter Mary will realize that sometimes the ones who don't fit in are the ones who really stand out.

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Thomas Haden Church, Bradley Cooper, Ken Jeong, D.J. Qualls
Directed by: Phil Traill
U.S. Rating: PG-13

Most of the reviews and comments about this romantic comedy are as tough as they can be, and I must agree with them in some way. With such an amazing cast, we could have expected more from the script and story. Sandra Bullock gave her best and saved the day with her leading role as a crossword puzzle constructor for a local news paper who is incredibly smart but really weird at the same time and falls in love with Steve (Bradley Cooper) on their failed first blind date. Bradley Cooper played an ok role, since his role didn't demand much from him, Thomas Haden Church stole the show with his funny role as the irresponsible, immature and dumb journalist.

Most of people have been really tough on this one, but I would say that is a really good option for a lazy afternoon or night weekend at home. I'm sure you'll have some good laughs.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The scenes when they meet for their blind date and she jumps on him inside the car, when she finds Steve at the hospital and the scen when she falls in the hole, really funny!
2. I really enjoyed Thomas Haden Church's role, his dumb and immature competition with the journalist from the other tv news station and how he gets his anchor role

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. With such an amazing cast, the script should have been way much better

I would rate this movie with a 2/5

Movie Review: It's Complicated

Friday, January 22, 2010 0 comments

Synopsis: Jane is the mother of three grown kids, owns a thriving Santa Barbara bakery/restaurant and has - after a decade of divorce - an amicable relationship with her ex-husband, attorney Jake. But when Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son's college graduation, things start to get complicated. An innocent meal together turns into the unimaginable - an affair. With Jake remarried to the much younger Agness, Jane is now, of all things, the other woman. Caught in the middle of their renewed romance is Adam, an architect hired to remodel Jane's kitchen. Healing from a divorce of his own, Adam starts to fall for Jane, but soon realizes he's become part of a love triangle. Should Jane and Jake move on with their lives, or is love truly lovelier the second time around? It's--complicated.

Starring: Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, John Krasinski, Lake Bell
Directed by: Nancy Meyers
U.S. Rating: R

Following her previews romantic comedy films (What Women Want, Something's Gotta Give and The holiday), Nancy Meyers showed us once again her unique talent as a screenwriter, director and producer with the film It's Complicated.

It's Complicated is the story of Jane (Meryl Streep), a divorced mother of three grown kids who finally has found the perfect balance in her family, single life, business & professional career. She's maintained a friendly relationship with her ex-husband Jake (Alec Baldwin), the man who cheated her with a younger girl, the same one he married after their divorce. During a family weekend in New York celebrating their younger son's graduation, an innocent meal turns into something extremely complicated, an affair! This initial encounter led them to few other encounters. While Jane tried to avoid this complicated situation (at least for her), Jake let all those his repressed feelings for Jane to be released and gets to the point of being a stalker (well, sort of!). While Jane and Jake debate with their personal feelings and complicated situation, Adam, Jane's architect gets in scene. Jane has the chance to know him better, finding so many similarities in their lives. Adam could be considered that kind of person that is in the wrong place at the wrong time. After facing a traumatic divorce, he's trying to avoid the situation that he finally had to face... being in the middle of two people that were meant to be together, no matter what.

A really interesting and funny plot supported by such a great and funny cast. Nancy Meyers worked in a very smart way not just the script, but the direction of the film, giving to all its viewers a pretty entertaining story. It is totally recommended!

What did I like from this movie?

1. Jake (Alec Baldwin) is so cocky that was perfect for the role
2. Meryl Streep, as usual, played a precious and enjoyable role
3. The plot was so well written and directed by Nancy Meyers
4. I totally laughed with some of the quotes and dialogues in this film, great script!
5. The scenes at the hotel, the chat session in the bedrooms and the fertility center

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. I didn't like that Adam (Steve Martin) had to end alone at the end of the film, being "the nice guy" on this film

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

Paramount Pictures & Overture Films have released the third movie trailer for their latest suspense/horror film, The Crazies, starring Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell. It will be a good option for the beginning of Spring 2010.

But one night, one of them comes to a school baseball game with a loaded shotgun, ready to kill. Another man burns down his own house-after locking his wife and young son in a closet inside. Within days, the town has transformed into a sickening asylum; people who days ago lived quiet, unremarkable lives have now become depraved, blood-thirsty killers, hiding in the darkness with guns and knives. Movie Review: Sorority Row

Thursday, January 21, 2010 0 comments

Synopsis: When five sorority girls inadvertently cause the murder of one of their sisters in a prank gone wrong, they agree to keep the matter to themselves and never speak of it again, so they can get on with their lives. This proves easier said than done, when after graduation a mysterious killer goes after the five of them and anyone who knows their secret.

Starring: Briana Evigan, Leah Pipes, Rumer Willis, Jamie Chung, Carrie Fisher
Directed by: Stewart Hendler
U.S. Rating: R

What it is supposed to be a horror film, turns into something remotely scary. I laughed at some of the key moments of this film, especially at the end. Even though Sorority Row was considered a possible great pop-corn Summer/Fall thriller, it was far from it. The script was bad, nonsense, not scary at all, supported by a cast that was more interested in selling a dumb, plastic image of a bunch of college girls jumping around in their underwear, throwing crazy parties, rude tricks and hiding secrets like they were a dark secret organization. The saddest of all was watching the once beautiful Princess Leia, Carrie Fisher, playing the role of the house mother of the Theta Pi Fraternity.

The film is about a group of girls who plan to play a trick to one of the girl's brother. The trick? They hooked him up to one of the girls, and while they were kissing in a room (being filmed by a video cam), the girl starts convulsing and dies (supposedly). Everything went well until the moment they get to a lonely place and the guy stucks a tire iron in girl's chest. They drop the dead body in a hole and decide to keep the incident as a secret. Few months later, the girls receive a text message with the tire iron used the night the girl died and from this moment on... lots (and I mean lots!) of people start dying. Some of the people killed have nothing to do with the event, some of the people involved in the event the night the girl was killed survived. The script tries to keep some options for your imagination, trying to guess who's the person killing all those involved in that incident, but at the end, it reveals the responsible... someone who has NOTHING to do with the situation. The end couldn't be more surreal: A house burning, several girls screaming their lungs out, machine gun shots everywhere, a house, hot tub and garden in a complete mess after a crazy loud party... and the police and fire department arrives years later?! Besides that, the surviving girls leave the house walking like they were in a beauty parade. I couldn't laugh louder. I could recommend this one for a boring afternoon at home, but honestly, I can't do that to my followers and friends.

What did I like from this movie?

1. I enjoyed the film laughing to all the plastic and dumb situations offered in this film

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Sad watching Carrie Fisher in this dumb scary college girls film
2. Poor plot and boring cast
3. Horrible end

I would rate this movie with a 1/5

Movie Review: Avatar

Synopsis: AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of "Titanic," first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not exist yet. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

We enter the alien world through the eyes of Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. But despite his broken body, Jake is still a warrior at heart. He is recruited to travel light years to the human outpost on Pandora, where corporations are mining a rare mineral that is the key to solving Earth's energy crisis. Because the atmosphere of Pandora is toxic, they have created the Avatar Program, in which human "drivers" have their consciousness linked to an avatar, a remotely-controlled biological body that can survive in the lethal air. These avatars are genetically engineered hybrids of human DNA mixed with DNA from the natives of Pandora... the Na'vi.

Reborn in his avatar form, Jake can walk again. He is given a mission to infiltrate the Na'vi, who have become a major obstacle to mining the precious ore. But a beautiful Na'vi female, Neytiri, saves Jake's life, and this changes everything. Jake is taken in by her clan, and learns to become one of them, which involves many tests and adventures. As Jake's relationship with his reluctant teacher Neytiri deepens, he learns to respect the Na'vi way and finally takes his place among them. Soon he will face the ultimate test as he leads them in an epic battle that will decide nothing less than the fate of an entire world.

Starring: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez
Directed by: James Cameron
U.S. Rating: PG-13

This is one of the of those perfect examples of why we shouldn't take our decisions based on the critics, reviews and comments of those who claim to be professional movie critics. I'd say that 90% of the reviews that I read (most of them from important portals and newspapers) made me think that this film didn't have what it takes to make history. Of course, most of them said that the effects and 3D technology applied to the film were A1, but the plot was plain and boring. Most of them said that all this film had to offered was delivered within the first 30 minutes of the film. I spent the last 4 weeks going to the movie theaters making my decisions based on any other movie but Avatar, since I wasn't convinced it would be a film worth to watch.

I finally took my decision to go and watch Avatar this week after reading a couple of articles about the top 5 movies in box office's history. I noticed that Titanic has been in 1st place for about 10 years, collecting the impressive amount of $1.7 billions, but Avatar has reached the 2nd place in just 4 weeks after making $1.4 billions! There must be something that is making people going to the theaters and watch this film over and over again!

Avatar is one of those unique films that you MUST watch on theaters... in 3D! If you miss the chance, you're missing the beauty and the best of it! Avatar brings an unique and spectacular new era in especial effects, technology and film scripts.

What's Avatar all about?

Avatar is the story of Jake Sulley (Sam Worthington), a Marine who lost the use of his legs in combat. Jake had a twin brother, a scientist working and training for the Avatar project, who died in an incident. Jake was offered a new life in a new planet, taking his brother's place. This was extremely important, since the Avatars were bio-engineered bodies genetically coded to an specific human. Even though he hasn't got the specific training, Jake got engaged in the project and was able to take total control of his Avatar.

The RDA Comporation is leading the Avatar project in Pandora, the planet inhabited by the Na'vi, a blue-skinned species of sapient humanoids with feline characteristics. Pandora's atmosphere is toxic to human. This is the reason of the creation of Avatars, Na'vi bodies modified with human DNA that are controlled by genetically-matched, mentally-linked human operators. These Avatars let Marines get involved with the inhabitants of Pandora, learn their language and culture, trying to convince them to relocate and let the Corporation and its project to exploit Pandora's reserves of a valuable mineral called unobtanium, valued in $20 millions per kilo. The inhabitants fight against the invaders trying to protect their planet, nature and the fragile balance in their natural world.

Once Jake starts learning the language and culture, getting involved with the inhabitants, he starts learning the importance of their beliefs and nature protection. After a series of events, Jake takes side with the inhabitants and fights Colonel Miles Quaritch and his army with the support and help of the inhabitants and nature, fighting them in an epic battle.

Avatar is one of the most amazing films I've seen so far. James Cameron took technology and visual effects to a higher level. The images and motion capture employed for the film are more than impressive.

The plot, the weak side of the film - according with the "professional reviewers" - is simply amazing. It is actually a pretty basic plot... yes, but a simple and strong script that is able to deliver the drama, action and emotions needed for this amazing film. Everything was beautifully matched... the direction, cast, plot, technology, effects and images.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The 3D technology and CGI effects applied, incredible!
2. The plot is simple but strong and entertaining, it is able to deliver the message and idea of the script, and most important? It matches with the visual side of the film
3. The cast was perfect for the film
4. I loved how colorful the film is!

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Nothing at all!

I would rate this movie with a 5/5

Movie Review: The Blind Side

Tuesday, January 19, 2010 2 comments

Synopsis: Michael Oher, a homeless African-American youngster from a broken home, is taken in by the Touhys, a well-to-do white family who help him fulfill his potential. At the same time, Oher's presence in the Touhys' lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own. Living in his new environment, the teen faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. As a football player and student, Oher works hard and, with the help of his coaches and adopted family, becomes an All-American offensive left tackle.

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Quinton Aaron, Lily Collins, Ray McKinnon
Directed by: John Lee Hancock
U.S. Rating: PG-13

Definitely one of the best films watched in 2009. Sandra Bullock played one of her best roles in her professional career, a role worth of a Golden Globe or/and Oscar Award. The Blind Side is based on a true story, supported with such an amazing cast and a pretty strong plot. The film is an inspirational story about the life of Michael Oher, an offensive lineman who plays for the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL. Being for 17 years in foster care with many different foster parents, Michael runs away from his latest foster home. One of his foster parents enrolls him in a Christian School and convinces his coach that he's a great sport guy and would help him on the School football team. Few days later, Michael meets Sean and they immediately become good friends. After a cultural activity after school, Sean's mother, Leigh Anne Tuohy - an important interior designer - sees Michael walking alone on the street in the middle of a rainy night and decides to take him home. After few events, Leigh Anne starts helping Michael to reach his potential and getting him more and more involved with her family. Michael starts achieving some success on school and the field, having some impressive moments in games that caught the attention of several coaches across the country. The film ends with some scenes of the real Michael Oher and his adopted family, at the 2009 NFL draft, showing Michael Oher being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens.

A truly inspiring and touching film with such an amazing role performance played by Sandra Bullock. Totally recommended!

What did I like from this movie?

1. Even though, Sandra Bullock played such an amazing role, we can't deny that Quinton Aaron played also a great role as Michael Oher
2. The little kid, Jae Head was impressively funny and played such an amazing role!
3. The plot was really great and enjoyable. Even though it was a drama, it had some comedy lines that made it even more entertaining

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Nothing at all!

I would rate this movie with a 5/5

2010 Golden Globe Winners!

Monday, January 18, 2010 0 comments

Well, the winners of the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards were finally revealed last night. As most of you know, I posted my predictions yesterday. I didn't have a perfect score, but I didn't do that bad either!

There were just a few surprises. Avatar won Best Motion Picture - Drama, and it didn't have any objection. It was definitely the best on the list. Sandra Bullock got her deserved Best Performance Actress - Drama Award, she had NO competition. Jeff Bridges won Best Performance Actor - Drama Award with his drama film Crazy Heart. I'm glad he got it, since I totally believe he's such a great actor. I'm honest, I haven't watched that film yet, but I've seen all the clips, interviews, and according with the "people" critics and comments, it seemed to be a deserved award. The Hangover won the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy Award. If anyone doubted about this award, it is because that person hasn't watch the film yet! Meryl Streep won her Best Performance Actress - Musical or Comedy Award for her role in Julie and Julia. I had no doubt about this award... if you haven't watched the movie yet, it is 100% recommended!

Robert Downey Jr won the Best Performance Actor - Musical or Comedy Award. Honestly, I don't know the reason for his nomination in the first place. Sherlock Holmes is not a Musical or Comedy film. Every single Movie Portal describes the film as an Action/Adventure/Thriller film, not a single one describes it as a Musical or Comedy film... but hey, I'm not the professional critic here, right? :) I must say that I totally enjoyed his role in Sherlock Holmes and I have no doubts that it was a deserved award but, since it was a "Musical or Comedy" category, I believed that Matt Daemon deserved it, since his film and role was perfect for the nomination and category nomination.

Mo'nique won the Best Performance Actress in a Supporting Role Award, and she deserved it. It is a film that has stayed "low-profile" out there and it's a film so worth to watch. Christopher Waltz won The Best Performance Actor in a Supporting Role Award and let me tell you, he deserved it more than anyone in that list. I know Inglorious Basterds is a crazy twisted film (well... it's a Tarantino's film), but Waltz's performance makes it so worth to watch! Up got the Best Animated Pictures Award, totally deserved. I know that all the Animated Pictures nominated were amazing, but Up was the best. The White Robbon won the Best Foreign Language Film Award. It was tricky one, since all these films were really good.

I'm not disappointed that James Cameron won the Best Director Award. I'm totally convinced that Avatar was beautifully directed. In fact, it was my first choice. Then, I decided to change my decision to Kathryn Bigalow, since her film (The Hurt Locker) was amazingly directed also. Honestly, I was impressed for her work. Up in the Air won the Best Screenplay Award from a very interesting list, since we had all kind of different films and visual material. I went for Inglorious Basterds, but Up in the Air deserved it.

Anyway, it was a really good practice for the Oscars Awards, coming in just a few weeks. I'll post the nomination list as soon as it is revealed and we can start an open forum about our predictions :)

The first movie trailer for the upcoming film, Tekken, has been released. The film is based in one of the most popular arcade fighting games in the 90's. I'm not a big fan of these "Mortal Combat" movie films, I haven't watched a single film based on these games that I could say... "it's worth to watch", but as far as I see, the movie trailer for this one seems to be good. We'll have to wait for more details and the official release date. Meanwhile, enjoy the trailer.

Synopsis: A Young Man Who seeks revenge of his mother's death. He finds his grand-father, Heihachi Mishima, and pleas to be trained. When the Mishima leader announces a “King of Iron Fist” tournament. He finds out that his mother’s killer, Ogre, will be participating in the tournament. He must fight against the world’s top competitors to achieve his goal with no interference.
