Synopsis: Doug MacRay is an unrepentant criminal, the de facto leader of a group of ruthless bank robbers who pride themselves in stealing what they want and getting out clean. With no real attachments, Doug never has to fear losing anyone close to him. But that all changed on the gang's latest job, when they briefly took a hostage--bank manager, Claire Keesey. Though they let her go unharmed, Claire is nervously aware that the robbers know her name and where she lives. But she lets her guard down when she meets an unassuming and rather charming man named Doug not realizing that he is the same man who only days earlier had terrorized her. The instant attraction between them gradually turns into a passionate romance that threatens to take them both down a dangerous, and potentially deadly, path.
Starring: Russell Crowe, Elizabeth Banks, Brian Dennehy, Lennie James, Olivia Wilde, Ty Simpkins, Helen Carey, Liam Neeson
Directed by: Paul Haggis
U.S. Rating: PG-13

Definitely, it was a great way to start the new year. The Next Three Days is the kind of film I DO love to watch, especially, being the first film watched at the theatre this year.

With such an amazing cast and a smart and intense plot, I must say that we were really entertained watching this film.

John Brennan (Russell Crowe) is a school teacher married to Lara Brennan (Elizabeth Banks) and they have a little boy named Luke. The film starts with John and Lara enjoying dinner at a restaurant with another couple,. Lara was a little bit late and was visibly irritated, pushing her to the point of having an argument with the other couple.

The morning after, when John and Lara were getting ready to leave home for work, she notices a mark with blood in her coat. While she's trying to wash it, the police knocks at their door and she's taken to jail for killing her boss. Lara had a big argument and fight at work with her boss, and then her boss was found dead at the parking lot.

Knowing that Lara was innocent, John tries everything he can to find the truth and appeal all the previous trials. When the last resource looks like it won't go through (appeal to the Supreme Court), he decides to do something more drastic. He contacts Damon Pennington (Liam Neeson), who was famous for breaking himself out of jail seven times. He gets all the possible information and advices from him and becomes obsessed with the idea of breaking her out of jail. Damon advises John to study the prison, saying "any prison has a key".

John starts planning carefully every single details about the jail and the different ways to break into the jail and get her out. Almost three years later, he has everything ready for his risky master plan.

After a few attempts and unexpected situations, John finds the way to get her wife out of jail. Since Lara was diabetic , John found the perfect key to get her out of jail and get the opportunity to get her and escape to a secure place.

In the meantime, the police is following closely John's steps and find the bags with parts of the papers, pictures, maps and complete information of his plan. They try to discern and guess his moves according with the information on these trash bags, but the time is the key element on this persecution.

After an intense fight against time and different dangerous situations, they're able to escape to their final destination: Caracas, Venezuela.

I must say that I was used to watch Elizabeth Banks in silly comedy films. She is a good actress, but I never saw her playing a key role in a thriller or drama film. After watching her on this film, I must say that she showed that she's not just another actress stuck in just an especific film category, but she has a great talent to play in more important roles, like the one played in this film.

I also liked Olivia Wilde role in this film. Even though she didn't do much or her role was a forgettable one, she did a good job.

And last, but not least, Caracas, Venezuela?! Why?!

Anyway, great film. If you're looking for a drama and intense thriller this film is totally recommended!!!

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

U.S. Rating: PG-13

Well, my wife wrote the review for Twilight, and it seems that I have to write the review of The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

I won't write anything about the plot or what it is about, since most of you know what's the film about and what happens in it. I didn't go to the movie theater to watch the film and I could not get the whole deal about "Team Jacob and Team Edward". Well, I finally took the time to watch the film at home and see for myself what was the whole deal about New Moon.

I'm going to try to be objective with my comments, trying to give my impressions of what I saw and noticed on this film.

I should start saying that it had a great image quality and pretty good CGI effects. The film tried to keep the same essence and details from Twilight. It had some really good action, suspense and romantic scenes, even a few comedy moments. So we could say that the production managed pretty good all those elements and kept the major content of the story.

The problem? The acting performance. Oh my!!! I haven't seen a film with so many acting flaws and mediocre performance like I witnessed in this film! Horrible acting! Maybe if the acting performance was better, the film could have been more entertaining.

Anyway, we'll see what we get on the "Eclipse" film, to be released in few weeks. Will they focus on improving their poor acting performance? Or will they keep just focusing on the shirtless endless scene and CGI effects? Because if that's the film all about, I can't understand what's the big deal with these books then!

What did I like from this movie?

1. Some good CGI effects
2. Great quality image

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Kristen Stewart... what a mediocre actress! Sorry, I can't help it! She SUCKS! And that goes to Robert Pattinson too. His acting scenes sucked big time! Sorry ladies, but that's the truth
2. The rest of the group sucked also on their acting performance. I could say that only a few people made a good and decent job

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: Next

Saturday, March 13, 2010 0 comments

Synopsis: Las Vegas showroom magician Cris Johnson has a secret which is a gift and a curse which torments him: he can see a few minutes into the future. Sick of the examinations he underwent as a child and the interest of the government and medical establishment in his power, he lies low under an assumed name in Vegas, performing cheap tricks and living off small-time gambling "winnings." But when a terrorist group threatens to detonate a nuclear device in Los Angeles, government agent Callie Ferris must use all her wiles to capture Cris and convince him to help her stop the cataclysm.

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore, Jessica Biel, Tory Kittles, Michael Trucco
Directed by: Lee Tamahori
U.S. Rating: PG-13

Many of you know that I'm a Nicolas Cage movies fan. I follow all of his movies and try to watch them all. Next wasn't an exception. What I could say is that it was an exception to those good movies led by Nicolas Cage I've watched before. I like to think he went through a dark period of time working on some bad movies, like Next and Bangkok Dangerous, for example, and now he's back with some recent good movies and some new good projects he's been working on.

Next is about Cris Johnson, a guy with a special and unique supernatural power... he can see and predict "his future" and change the events according with the things and probabilities he sees from his future. He's well known in Las Vegas and he's been followed by the FBI to get his assistance in finding a dangerous terrorist group that is planning to attack the U.S. with a nuclear bomb. They want him to find them and prevent this attack. But first, they need to catch him. On this process, he meets Liz Cooper, someone he's seen in his visions and that will be related with all the "possible" events he will be involved in the future.

The FBI and the terrorist group take advantage of this situation and they will fight for getting him, or getting the girl... so he can collaborate with them (the FBI) , or simply be murdered by the terrorist group.

A really lazy and empty plot supported by such a great and talented cast. It's sad that with such an interesting idea, they didn't take advantage of it and brought a pretty basic and, in some occasions, a nonsense script. No matter what, it can be an entertaining film for a good weekend afternoon at home.

What did I like from this movie?

1. Good cast involved in this film
2. I really enjoyed the "idea" of this plot, but not the content
3. Some good effects and great quality image (especially on Blu Ray!)
4. I enjoyed the last scene, good end

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. The script was really weak. The project of a guy seeing and predicting the future could give you thousands of better situations and ideas, but it seems that they just focused on some basic and nonsense ideas and brought them to the big screen, for example, the avalanche scene
2. I couldn't feel any chemistry between Nicolas Cage and Jessica Biel, at all!

I would rate this movie with a 2/5

Movie Review: Next Day Air

Thursday, January 7, 2010 0 comments

Synopsis: When an overnight shipment of drugs winds up in the hands of the wrong recipient, all parties involved embark on a break-neck quest to retreive the lost goods.

Starring: Donald Faison, Wood Harris, Omari Hardwick, Mike Epps, Cisco Reyes
Directed by: Benny Boom
U.S. Rating: R

When I found this movie for the first time and saw the cast involved in it, I thought it would offer a funny action plot worth to watch. It turned that it wasn't as good as I thought. Being used to watch really funny movies with Mike Epss and Donald Faison, Next Day Air brings more an action movie with some random funny situations. Leo (Donald Faison) works for an overnight shipping company that is run by his mother. He's a careless young guy that only cares about his relaxing moments driving while he smokes some pot. He needs to deliver a big box to an apartment, but he confuses the door and delivers the package to the wrong people. Brody (Mike Epps) and his friend open the box and notice that it is a container full of drug packets. They immediately try to find a buyer and cash those drug packets, making a final decision to sell the material to Brody's cousin (who's a drug dealer). The action starts when the owner of the drug looks for Leo and then they all look for Brody, so they can recover the merchandise. A pretty lousy plot with a decent cast. I personally believe that Mike Epps, Donald Faison & Dante "Mos Def" Smith saved the day for this movie.

What did I like from this movie?

1. I really enjoyed the sporadic funny situations and the roles played by Mike Epps, Donald Faison & Dante "Mos Def" Smith

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. a weak and lousy plot

I would rate this movie with a 2/5

Movie Review: Necessary Evil

Friday, November 13, 2009 1 comments

Synopsis: While trying to shed some light on the mystery surrounding a bizarre psychiatric institute, persistent investigative journalist Deborah Fielding falls headlong into a twisted, mind-altering world of lies, deceit, and unimaginable terror. Viewers won’t be able to brace themselves for the shocking secrets unlocked in this twisted horror show.

Starring: Lance Henriksen, Danny Trejo, Greg Collins
Directed by: Peter J. Eaton
U.S. Rating: R

One of the worst and most boring movies I've watched in a while. Necessary Evil starts with a team of mercenaries that capture a supernatural creature in a tomb in the middle east. After affecting one of the team members, Dr. Fibrian, the leader of this project discovers through some experiments on Frank Sanders, the member attacked by this creature, a rejuvenating power on this creature's blood.

Several years later, this plot moves into Deborah Fielding's life, a journalism student who's pregnant and has been part of some cruel medical tests led by Dr. Fibrian (We never know how they got to this point in the plot).

Deborah starts taking a new drug for a medical condition (due to these medical tests) and through a research, she discovers more information not just about the drug, but the hospital, Dr. Fibrian and all the abuses exposed in this psychiatric hospital.

In the middle of the plot, we discovers that Deborah seems to be better and more expert than any super spy, with so many professional skills, never explained how she got them.

Anyway, a very confusing plot due to all the many mysteries and details never revealed or explained that makes the plot not just difficult to follow, but extremely boring and poorly directed.

What did I like from this movie?

1. Nothing

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Everything

p.s.: Sorry for being so short and straight in these likes and dislikes, but I can't think of anything in details after watching this movie

I would rate this movie with a 1/5

OH MY GOSH I LOVED THIS MOVIE! I had no idea what it was about. I just put it on and I was sucked in immediately. It was shocking at what was happening, and I just couldn't understand why she wouldn't just tell who her source was! I finally found out. It is a riveting movie. One to watch. This is a movie everyone should watch to understand why freedom of speech is so important. The ending shocked me and made me cry. I was moved to tears. Literally.

Movie Review: Nacho Libre

Thursday, October 22, 2009 3 comments

Synopsis: Nacho is a man without skills. After growing up in a Mexican monastery, he is now a grown man and the monastery's cook, but doesn't seem to fit in. Nacho cares deeply for the orphans he feeds, but his food is terrible--mostly, if you ask him, a result of his terrible ingredients. He realizes he must hatch a plan to make money to buy better food for "the young orphans, who have nothing" (and if in doing so Nacho can impress the lovely Sister Encarnacion, that would be a big plus). When Nacho is struck by the idea to earn money as a Lucha Libre wrestler, he finds that he has a natural, raw talent for wrestling. As he teams with his rail-thin, unconventional partner, Esqueleto (the Skeleton), Nacho feels for the first time in his life that he has something to fight for and a place where he belongs. As Lucha is strictly forbidden by the church elders at the monastery, Nacho is forced to lead a double life. Disguised by a sky blue mask, Nacho conceals his true identity as he takes on Mexico's most famous wrestlers and takes on a hilarious quest to make life a little sweeter at the orphanage.

Starring: Jack Black, Hector Jimenez, Troy Gentile, Moises Arias, Lauro Chartrand
Directed by: Jared Hess
U.S. Rating: PG

NaachOOOOoooooooooooo....... Jack Black is back one more time with this hilarious plot about Nacho, an young adult who grew up in a Mexican orphanage among other orphan kids. He grew up with a huge and secret dream... be a rich and famous Mexican "luchador" (wrestler). His goal is to achieve this dream and provide better food and progress opportunities for all the kids living in the orphanage, due to his fame and money. The only problem? He needs to beat Ramsess, the greatest Mexican wrestler. His plan? Well, there's no plan. In his journey to the fulfillment of his dream, he meets Esqueleto, this weird and sadistic looking guy who will become his fighting partner. A hilarious silly comedy with Jack Black dressed in home-made wrestler tights and masks, fake Spanglish accent and some silly but hilarious scenes.

What did I like from this movie?

1. NaaChOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo.... Who?! This is one of the most hilarious scenes in this movie! when he screams his wrestler name and the priest has no idea what he's saying
2. When Black tries to chase Hector, the weird looking guy and then they get together to get in the professional wrestling world
3. After their first fight, when they're in the lockers all messed up after being bit all up and they still got paid for fighting and they start buying better food and clothing
4. The white boots and blue suit that Black gets and the beauty treatment that Hector gets after few fights
5. Definitely, the moment when he goes on a date with the nun and he clunches his butt in those tight blue pants
6. The little chunky kid, really funny
7. The moment when they get in the party without being invited, Black has to play some Rancheras with the Mariachi, and the weird looking guy has to run away from the fat little girl who wants to seduce him

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. There's something with the plot. No matter how hilarious it might be, it is kind of forgettable

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

Movie Review: Napoleon Dynamite

Sunday, September 20, 2009 2 comments

Synopsis: From the rural town of Preston, Idaho, comes Napoleon Dynamite. With a red 'fro, his moon boots and illegal government ninja moves, he is a new kind of hero. His family consists of fragile brother Kip, who's seeking his soulmate in online chat rooms; Uncle Rico, who is stuck in his "glory" days of high school football; and Grandma, who enjoys going out to the dunes on her quad-runner. Napoleon spends his days drawing magical beasts, working on his computer hacking skills to impress the chicks, and begrudgingly feeding his grandma's pet llama. When his friend Pedro decides to run for class president, it is Napoleon to the rescue to help him triumph over adversity.

Starring: Jon Heder, Efren Ramirez, Jon Gries, Aaron Ruell, Tina Majorino
Directed by: Jared Hess
U.S. Rating: PG

Napoleon is a dork with some special skills, if you know what I mean. A simple, fresh and funny plot. I personally believe that Napoleon Dynamite is one of the best teen movies in years. The first time I saw this movie, I totally believed Jon Heder was actually a complete dork! The way he looks, dresses, walks, runs, talks, his actions, his appearance... everything was so natural! Such a funny dork. It's interesting how this independent production with such a low budget could get everyone's attention in Sundance Film Festival and become such a comedy success. Definitely a funny movie that everyone should watch, especially if you're looking for a good teen comedy.

What did I like from this movie?

1. When Kip tells Napoleon... "Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day"
2. The scene when uncle Rico is eating a steak with Kip in the front yard, he sees Napoleon getting home with Pedro in his bike, grabs the steak with his hand and throws it, hitting Napoleon in the face
3. Uncle Rico, such a looser!
4. Pedro is my favorite character in this movie... come on! Who wouldn't vote for Pedro?!

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. They haven't come with a good sequel. They should go for a sequel, maybe Napoleon in college!

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: Night at the Museum

Friday, September 18, 2009 0 comments

Synopsis: Good-hearted dreamer Larry Daley, despite being perpetually down on his luck, thinks he's destined for something big. But even he could never have imagined how big, when he accepts what appears to be a menial job as a graveyard-shift security guard at a museum of natural history. During Larry's watch, extraordinary things begin to occur: Mayans, Roman Gladiators, and cowboys emerge from their diorama to wage epic battles; in his quest for fire, a Neanderthal burns down his own display; Attila the Hun pillages his neighboring exhibits, and a T-Rex reminds everyone why he's history's fiercest predator. Amidst the chaos, the only person Larry can turn to for advice is a wax figure of President Teddy Roosevelt , who helps our hero harness the bedlam, stop a nefarious plot, and save the museum.

Starring: Ben Stiller, Carla Gugino, Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Bill Cobbs
Directed by: Shawn Levy
U.S. Rating: PG

One of my favorite movies. It is not just because I'm a huge fan of Ben Stiller movies, but because it is a really funny and entertaining movie. The plot is fresh and really entertaining for people of all ages. Ben Stiller plays the role of the divorce and unemployed father that needs to find a job to stay close to his son. On his job hunting, he's offered to be the night guard at the museum of natural history. Many guards have got and quit that job, the reason? The museum has a secret, everything and everyone comes to life when the sun goes down. This is the moment when the real action and comedy starts in this movie, going through different situations and remarkable people in history. I personally recommend this movie for everyone searching for some really good laughs and a great time.

What did I like from this movie?

1. My top favorite character is the Easter Island stone head. I totally laugh when they meet for the first time and the stone head says: "Hey! Dum-dum!... You give me gum-gum!... You new Dum-dum. You give me gum-gum"
2. The constant disputes and discussions between Jedediah and Octavius, and how they try to control or be kinda bossy with Ben Stiller
3. The whole situation with the Huns, especially when Ben Stiller finally controls them and the leader starts crying on his shoulder

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. The idea for this script is so brilliant, but I personally believe they could get so much more and better material (even though I loved it!)

I would rate this movie with a 4/5
