Movie Review: Safe House

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 0 comments

Synopsis: For the past year, Matt Weston has been frustrated by his inactive, backwater post in Cape Town. A "housekeeper" who aspires to be a full-fledged agent, the loyal company man has been waiting for an opportunity to prove himself. When the first and only occupant he's had proves to be the most dangerous man he's ever met, Weston readies for duty.

Tobin Frost has eluded capture for almost a decade. One of the best ops men that the CIA's known, the ex-intelligence officer has given up assets and sold military intel to anyone with cash since he turned. From trading secrets to North Korea to aiding splinter cells, the damage he's done to the U.S. is immeasurable. And he's now back on the reservation with a secret.

As soon as Frost is brought in for debriefing, mercenaries come and tear apart Weston's safe house. Barely escaping, the unlikely partners must discover if their attackers have been sent by terrorists or someone on the inside who will kill anyone standing in the way. Now it's up to Weston to figure out who he can trust before they're both eliminated from the game.
Starring: Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard, Vera Farmiga, Fares Fares, Ruben Blades
Directed by: Daniel Espinosa
U.S. Rating: R

Denzel Washington comes back again to the big screen to deliver the exceptional acting performance we love and enjoy, this time, with the supporting role of Ryan Reynolds and a unique cast to make of this, a thrilling action film.

Denzel Washington is Tobin Frost, an ex-CIA agent that has become and considered an international criminal by the CIA after trading top-secret information with other agent from the MI6. All this information (detailing the criminal activities of several worldwide intelligence agents) is contained in a micro-chip, but soon after he gets this valuable information, he's chased and attacked by a mercenary team. When he's in the run and notices he's about to be caught by this team, he forces himself to enter into an American consulate and identify himself. As soon as he's identified, he is moved to a CIA safe house in Cape Town, South Africa.

Ryan Reynolds plays the role of Matt Weston, a low-level CIA agent who works as The "housekeeper" of this Safe House. He's been trying to move up in the agency, trying to get another job or location, since he's literally doing absolutely nothing on this place. When an elite team brings Tobin Frost to the Safe House, Matt Weston watches Frost's interrogation. Soon they'll notice that the Safe House has been compromised and the same mercenary team that was chasing him earlier that day, attack the house. Weston as responsible of the "guests" of the Safe House, escapes with Frost captive. Weston contacts his mentor, David Barlow, and Catherine Linkater at CIA headquarters to get instructions, and they recommend him to stay low until he gets further instructions.

Weston hides with Frost and gets the instructions of getting Frost to another Safe House. Weston and Frost go to Cape Town Stadium to retrieve a GPS device with the location of this new safe house, but Frost creates a diversion and escapes by disguising himself as a policeman. Weston, detained by the police, escapes but can't catch Frost, who escapes.

Weston is ordered to go to the nearest American embassy for debriefing. Instead he decides to locate the house of Frost's contact, Carlos Villar (played by one of my TOP Salsa singers of all time... Rubén Blades), where Frost is attacked by the mercenary team, but escapes with Weston's help. Weston gets more information about this mercenary team and its boss, Vargas, who works for the CIA and is trying to recover the micro-chip and information held by Frost.

They decide to work together, going to the new Safe House and bring all the mercenary team, the CIA top agents behind this team and most important, bring this information to the public attention.

Director Daniel Espinosa works for the first time with Denzel Washington on this intense action film, taking a little bit of other similar action films and mix them into a pretty decent thriller.

The film, from my personal point of view, lacks of some background information about the characters involved in this film. That didn't help us (at least me) to get more into the characters and get more from them and the story. Obviously, it might be the reason why they put all the effort on all the action scenes (car chasing, houses attacks, etc) and keep our attention.

Definitely a pretty decent action film... Hey! Denzel Washington! what else can you ask for? Totally recommended for a good night at the cinema (or movie night at home when it comes out on DVD/Blu Ray).

I would rate this movie with a 3.5/5

Here I am again, with a new Top Ten Tuesdays blog post! So far, I've posted about my Top Ten Favorite Oscars Films, my two first Top Ten Favorite Actors Films (Nicolas Cage & Bruce Willis), my first Top Ten Favorite Producer's Films (Jerry Bruckheimer) and my first Top Ten Favorite Actress Films (Meryl Streep). This week I've decided to bring my top ten favorite films from one of the most important Film Studios in Hollywood: Paramount Pictures.

It has been such a really difficult list, since the Paramount Pictures films list is HUGE and obviously, the list for favorite ones was really long. I had to leave some important films out of this list, but they'll come back in the near future, since they are icons for some actors, actresses, genres or directors. I've tried to place the films in my favorite order. Hope you guys can enjoy the list!

10
Rat Race
Synopsis: Donald Sinclair owns the biggest, snazziest, flashiest, high rolling-est casino in Las Vegas. And to entertain some of his wealthiest patrons, he's staged the most original high stakes game that Sin City has ever seen! The contestants? Six teams. The jackpot? Two million dollars stuffed in a locker hundreds of miles away. The odds of winning? One in six. The rules? Well there's only one--get there first! What the racers don't know is that the tycoon and his rich buddies are betting on the outcome and are tracking every move the teams make. It's only a matter of time before they figure out who really stands to win the most before switching course to look for a different kind of pay-off.

Personal Comments: One truly funny film with a unique cast. It was actually one of those films that broke the mold of having so many great actors and actresses giving their best to make it all work like a charm. Noone tried to shine more than the other ones, making the film so fresh and extremely funny. I believe it was the funniest film I watched over and over that year 2001.

9
Tommy Boy
Synopsis: When Tommy Callahan graduates triumphantly after seven years of college with a D+ average and returns to Sandusky, Ohio, to learn the family business, no one is prouder than his father, Big Tom--or more surprised than his hometown. Callahan Auto Parts is the lifeblood of the town, so when Big Tom takes a new bride, young Tommy finds himself confronted with buyout attempts and intrigue. It becomes clear that the only way to save the plant and the town rests squarely on Tommy's round shoulders. Hopelessly oafish, Tommy enlists the reluctant aid of Big Tom's former righthand man, Richard Hayden. Together, the two hit the road. And the road hits back.

Personal Comments: It's SO sad that one of the funniest promising guys in Hollywood died so young, having such a HUGE potential to give us some really funny laughs. Chris Farley was THE guy to watch on the late 90s. This film was actually one of the funniest films I watched on that decade. David Spade did such a funny and excellent job on this film as the responsible supporting role. I really love this film... Simply HILARIOUS!

8
Ghost
Synopsis: After he's murdered, a young executive attempts to communicate with his girlfriend through a phony psychic.

Personal Comments: What can I say from this film? One of the biggest classics of all times. Such a unique cast, a superb script, great direction and even the soundtrack is amazing! Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore at their very best.

7
War of the Worlds
Synopsis: As Earth is invaded by alien tripod fighting machines, one family fights for survival.

Personal Comments: A perfect combination for a superb film: Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise. This film adaptation of H. G. Wells' novel of the same name was such a great Sci-Fi/Drama to watch back in 2005. Tom Cruise played so brilliantly his role as Ray Ferrier, a scared and stressed divorced father, with also a brilliant performance by Dakota Fanning as Tom Cruise's little daugther. Great acting performance, great visual effects and an excellent direction.

6
Major League
Synopsis: Story of the losing Cleveland Indians baseball team threatened with relocation to Miami.

Personal Comments: If you are a sport & movie lover, this is definitely a film to watch. It's the perfect triple combination... Sport/Film/Comedy. I had some really, really good laughs back in 1989 when this film was released, and every time I watched it ever since. It was one of the craziest and most hilarious comedies about sports I've watched so far.

5
Napoleon Dynamite
Synopsis: From the rural town of Preston, Idaho, comes Napoleon Dynamite. With a red 'fro, his moon boots and illegal government ninja moves, he is a new kind of hero. His family consists of fragile brother Kip, who's seeking his soulmate in online chat rooms; Uncle Rico, who is stuck in his "glory" days of high school football; and Grandma, who enjoys going out to the dunes on her quad-runner. Napoleon spends his days drawing magical beasts, working on his computer hacking skills to impress the chicks, and begrudgingly feeding his grandma's pet llama. When his friend Pedro decides to run for class president, it is Napoleon to the rescue to help him triumph over adversity.

Personal Comments: One of the weirdest and funniest films I've watched in a while. I wrote a short review back in 2009 about this film. As said in that ocasion, Napoleon is a dork with some special skills, if you know what I mean. A simple, fresh and funny plot. I personally believe that Napoleon Dynamite is one of the best teen movies in years. The first time I saw this movie, I totally believed Jon Heder was actually a complete dork! The way he looks, dresses, walks, runs, talks, his actions, his appearance... everything was so natural! Such a funny dork. It's interesting how this independent production with such a low budget could get everyone's attention in Sundance Film Festival and become such a comedy success. Definitely a funny movie that everyone should watch, especially if you're looking for a good teen comedy.

4
Braveheart
Synopsis: In the late 13th century, William Wallace returns to Scotland after living away from his homeland for many years. The king of Scotland has died without an heir and the king of England, a ruthless pagan known as Edward the Longshanks, has seized the throne. Wallace becomes the leader of a ramshackle yet courageous army determined to vanquish the greater English forces. At the historic battle of Stirling, Wallace leads his army to a stunning victory against the English. Knighted by the grateful Scottish nobles, Sir William Wallace extends the conflict south of the border and storms the city of York. King Edward I is astonished by the unexpected turn of events. Unable to rely on his ineffectual son Prince Edward, Longshanks sends his daughter-in-law Princess Isabelle to discuss a truce with Wallace.

Personal Comments: I believe it was such an inspiring and amazing film. Mel Gibson at his best, not just as the lead actor, but as a director. So worth of the two precious Oscars Awards. If it was a miningful and inspiring film back in 1995 and years later, it is even more now living in Scotland, where I've been able to learn a bit more about William Wallace and the historic sites related with his heritage in the Scottish history.

3
Wayne's World
Synopsis: Film based on the skit from NBC's "Saturday Night Live," featuring Wayne and Garth, whose late night public access cable show offers their inspired views on teenage life.

Personal Comments: Yes... Just like the poster says... I laught and cried (for laughing so hard) with Wayne's World. Just another great comedy classic worth to watch over and over again!

2
Bloodsport
Synopsis: Frank Dux has spent most his life being trained by Tanaka to participate in the Kumite, the ultimate martial arts tournament, where participants are seriously injured, even killed. Frank decides to go despite being told by his superiors in the army that he can't because they need him. Two army officers are sent to get him and the trail leads to Hong Kong but Frank eludes them. While Frank advances, he knows that he may have to face Chong Li, the defending champion, who has killed a few participants.

Personal Comments: Jean Claude Van Damme at his very best. I DO believe this was the film that made his whole career. One of the best modern martial arts film I've watched in decades. It offered not just a pretty strong and entertaining story, but a really good cast and some really, really cool fight scenes for its time. Totally recommended!

1
Forrest Gump
Synopsis: The title character leads viewers through an accidental travelogue of American social history from the early 1960s through the present in this revisionist fable. Vietnam, desegregation, Watergate, and more are presented from the perspective of Tom Hanks's loveably slow-witted Forrest Gump as he finds himself embroiled in situations he can't quite comprehend. Hanks leads an excellent cast, featuring Robin Wright Penn as Jenny, Forrest's lifelong love; Gary Sinise as the irascible Lt. Dan, his Vietnam superior; Mykelti Williamson as Bubba, a shrimp-loving soldier; and Sally Fields as his devoted mother. Robert Zemeckis's emotional, heartwarming film garnered 13 Academy Award nominations and six wins, including Best Picture, Director, Actor--Tom Hanks, and Adapted Screenplay.

Personal Comments: Furrest Gump is simply a master piece. One of the greatest acting performances in decades played by Tom Hanks, one of the best scripts I've enjoyed in decades, a unique cast and superb direction. One of the greatest classics to watch over and over again.

What do you think of this list? Is any of these films also one of your top favorite ones?

Synopsis: Three models of modest means rent an expensive Manhattan penthouse apartment and pose as women of wealth as part of an elaborate scheme to snare rich husbands.
Starring: Marilyn Monroe, Percy Helton, Betty Grable, Lauren Bacall, William Powell, David Wayne
Directed by: Jean Negulesco
U.S. Rating: Not Rated

"How To Marry A Millionaire" is a typical 20th Century Fox comedy blockbuster of the 1950's. This movie is the very definition of a big, brassy and over-the-top Hollywood of days gone by, and it's all the more fabulous for it. The three leading ladies are wonderful - each providing something different from the other and all of them truly accomplished and talented comedy actresses.

Marilyn Monroe, for my money, steals the show hands down. She is absoloutley adorable in the film and she looks at her most beautiful, too. Many other beautiful women have drifted in and out of film over the years, but in "How To Marry A Millionaire" it should be obvious to anyone that Monroe is the most beautiful of them all, period. She is also puts in the kind of perfected comedy performance nobody else can. Betty Grable is wonderful, and just as hillarious and beautiful. Lauren Bacall leads the way and is pretty much flawless in her portrayal of the money-hunting ladies ring leader. The cinemaphotography is pure 1950's Hollywood and it looks pretty stunning, it has to be said. This was one of the first movies to use 20th Century Fox's Cinemascope format, which was baisically a 1950's version of today's Widescreen technique. With that there are a lack of close-up's. This is something nearly all other Cinemascope pictures fall victim to.

"How To Marry A Millionaire" is a very entertaining movie and a must see for fans of Monroe, Grable or Bacall. The script, although dated in places, holds up pretty well and even provides a rather poignant take on Sexual Politics in places. a true Hollywood gem that remains as sparkly and fabulous as it must have been almost 60 years ago.

I would rate this movie with a 4/5
