Movie Review: Good Hair

Wednesday, February 10, 2010 0 comments

Synopsis: When Chris Rock's daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?" the bewildered comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl's head. Rock visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people. Celebrities such as Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symone, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter's question. What he discovers is that black hair is a big business that doesn't always benefit the black community and little Lola's question might well be bigger than his ability to convince her that the stuff on top of her head is nowhere near as important as what is inside.

Starring: Chris Rock, Maya Angelou, Marvet Britto, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Rhonda Cowan
Directed by: Jeff Stilson
U.S. Rating: PG-13

I'm a huge fan of Chris Rock. I enjoy his movies, TV Shows and especially, his comedy stand up shows. This time, Chris has come with something completely different... a documentary. When Chris Rock's daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?", Chris decided to search the reasons behind that question and find the cultural, financial and social areas related with one of the most important things in women's lives, especially black women... their hair :)

In a very fresh and really funny way, Chris discovers many things that honestly, I didn't know and never heard about women's hair. Before I watched this documentary, I never heard about relaxers, I never... ever knew that these beautiful and famous black actresses used weaves (I didn't even know what a weave was!), I knew about the Indian hair, but never knew some of the things said and shown on this documentary, and finally, the millionaire industry behind the hair, especially, black women's hair. How can a woman pay from 1000 to 5000 dollars for a weave, and some women replace them every month!... Crazy!

A really entertaining, fresh and funny documentary, so worth to watch! Chris Rock nailed it in this, his first comedy/documentary about... hair.

What did I like from this movie?

1. Chris Rock rocks on this documentary
2. The celebrities participating on the documentary was more than entertaining. Some of them are well known (Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symone, Maya Angelou, Reverend Al Sharpton, etc.)
3. The interviews and conversations at the barber shops... hilarious! There are no places like barber shops

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. If he used the time he used to show the BB contest in more content and conversation, it would be even better. The BB contest was kind of boring

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Synopsis: Michael Jackson takes a final bow in this theatrical concert film featuring rehearsal footage of the late megastar as he practiced for the 100 shows in London that never came to be. HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL's Kenny Ortega handles direction duties as well as choreography chores for the HD-shot film.

Starring: Michael Jackson
Directed by: Kenny Ortega
U.S. Rating: PG

As a big Michael Jackson's fan who would have loved to be in one of his concerts in London last summer, I must admit that this musical-documentary shows the rehearsals of what would have been such an amazing show in musical history. I must admit that I never agreed with all the weird things surrounding his personal life and the way he lived it, but no one, absolutely no one can say that he won't be the king of pop forever.

The best thing about this musical-documentary is that it looks it never was intended to be filmed for public viewing, and it makes it even more spontaneous and original, showing all those little details that made him the best in the pop music world.

On this documentary, MJ goes through some of his best and most memorable songs, giving us a glimpse of what would have been a series of concerts that would show why he was the king. Totally recommended if... you're an MJ fan :)

What did I like from this movie?

1. The songs selection for this documentary was the best
2. All the video material and effects that was prepared for the concerts, especially the material for The Earth Song and Thriller... simply amazing!
3. The band was absolutely impressive, especially the girl and guy playing the guitars

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. I would have add more song, music to the documentary, but it was more than ok

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

Movie Review: An Inconvenient Truth

Thursday, November 26, 2009 0 comments

Synopsis: Director Davis Guggenheim eloquently weaves the science of global warming with Mr. Gore's personal history and lifelong commitment to reversing the effects of global climate change. A longtime advocate for the environment, Gore presents a wide array of facts and information in a thoughtful and compelling way. "Al Gore strips his presentations of politics, laying out the facts for the audience to draw their own conclusions in a charming, funny and engaging style, and by the end has everyone on the edge of their seats, gripped by his haunting message," said Guggenheim. An Inconvenient Truth is not a story of despair but rather a rallying cry to protect the one earth we all share. "It is now clear that we face a deepening global climate crisis that requires us to act boldly, quickly, and wisely," said Gore.

Starring: Al Gore
Directed by: Davis Guggenheim
U.S. Rating: PG

One of the best documentaries I've watched until this day. No matter how dramatic or eco-horrific it might look, Al Gore put so much statistical facts, information powerful and intelligent arguments all together to present not a "scary" but thoughtful documentary about how our actions directly affect the nature and the world we live in. Al Gore tries to describe not just what Global Warming is, how it works, but how it affects the planet and our lives, especially through all the latest events and natural disasters. I personally learned some amazing details about our planet that I wasn't aware of. Totally recommended... Worth of the Oscar received.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The statistical facts and information presented in such a professional manner and in a very entertaining way

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. So much material, thoughtful facts and information that might not being taken as serious as it should

I would rate this movie with a 5/5

Movie Review: La Vida Loca

Sunday, October 4, 2009 0 comments

Synopsis: In Centra America, they are called Maras, groups of youngsters who have modeled themselves on the Los Angeles youth gangs. They are extremely violent and are propagating terror in El Salvador and elsewhere. The documentary is a study, through photography and the personal stories of these gang members, of a violent phenomenon that has been imported from the USA.

Starring: Christian Poveda
Directed by: Christian Poveda
U.S. Rating: R

Christian Poveda, a Hispanic-French photojournalist and a Film director who decided to film a documentary about two of the most violent gangs in all America, the Maras Salvatrucha and the Maras 18. This photojournalist, who survived the war in Lebanon and the war Iran-Iraq couldn't survive the violence in El Salvador. Few months after this documentary was finished, Poveda decided to go back to the same area where he took some of the images. There, he was invited to visit one of the ghettos where he was kidnapped and murdered, shot 4 times in the face. The international press and the first results from the investigation of this murder say that he might have been killed by some members of the gangs he exposed in this documentary, who weren't happy about being exposed on this film. This violent and cruel documentary brings to the viewers the story of some members of these extremely dangerous gangs, showing their life style, their violence and how the government and society have to deal with them. Gangs who have imported some of the most dangerous gang styles and techniques, to the point that have forced international police forces like the FBI to work with the police in El Salvador, to control and reduce the influence of these gangs.

What did I like from this movie?

1. How fearless and smart had to be this journalist to be able to get the approval of the police, department of justice in El Salvador, and especially the gangs, to get the images, shots and information needed to complete this documentary

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Too violent and cruel

I would rate this movie with a 1/5

Movie Review: Farenheit 9/11

Wednesday, September 23, 2009 0 comments

Synopsis: An expose which reflects upon what has happened to America since the events of September 11, 2001 that touches upon the personal relationship between President George W. Bush and the family of terrorist Osama bin Laden. As well, the chronicle focuses on the powerful roles that oil and greed may have played in the terrorist attack on the U.S.A.

Starring: Michael Moore, George W. Bush, Lila Lipscomb
Directed by: Michael Moore
U.S. Rating: R

It's hard for me to define Michael Moore's political view. Sometimes he seems to be a political activist with some socialist ideas, sometimes he seems to be an activist of populism, sometimes he seems to be like an activist of one of these new "green" political parties, trying to make a better world and bring peace and love to humanity. Anyway, what I can say is that no matter if I sympathize with his political views or not, I always enjoy his documentaries, just because he can be really annoying for many people! I used to watch his show The Ugly Truth, and I totally laughed every time he was kicked out from an office building, or when people got annoyed or upset and just left him talking to himself.

This documentary, Farenheit 9/11 is well known for many of us. Michael Moore tries to bring to the audience some facts involved with the events during the 9/11 and tries to find a logical/political or strategic reason for all these events and the posterior war on Terror taken to Afganistan and Iraq.

Some of the facts exposed are really interesting, and some information and critics are more like a political/strategic acusation to George Bush, his administration and other important business men and corporations involved in this situation, even more obvious when he decided to take his documentary to the big screen just few months before the national elections in 2004.

What I personally like from Michael Moore is that he's able to work on subjects and social issues based on true (or not) facts and important events, for example, the massacre in Columbine, the 9/11 terrorist attack, the issues with the health system (his Documentary: Sicko) and the most recent one related with the crush on the global economy (Capitalism: A love story).

liver Stone has tried to go recently on a same direction, trying to work on movies and documentaries base on social and political standards, but the thing is that Oliver Stone documentaries have turned in such a cheap propaganda to all those third-world socialist leaders like Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, trying to sell garbage as a great social and policial movement and innovation.

Even though, I'm skeptical about Michael Moore and his recent contacts in Venice, when he went to the Festival to show his new documentary and there, he contacted and maintained an interview with Hugo Chavez, who was there thinking that he was some kind of movie star, by the hand of Oliver Stone, while Venezuelans are facing the worst social/political and economical situation in decades because of his political and social actions and decisions. Michael Moore has announced that he'll visit Hugo Chavez (I can't say he'll visit Venezuela, because Venezuelans didn't invite him) before the end of the year. So, we'll see if he's one of those romantic socialists like Oliver Stone, dreaming and showing eternal love to dictators like these two morons (Chavez and Castro) but in their private lives, they love to enjoy the fruits and pleasures of capitalism... living in a Mansion in California, with great cars, great luxury and, especially, if their documentaries are being financed and paid by these third-world leaders with some really good $$ millions that belong to their people and countries. I'll believe in their truly love for their ideas when I see them relocating to these countries and live like a normal cuban or venezuelan, with their daily dilemmas and needs.

Sorry about these comments! I know they're not related with the documentary, but they're part of the ideas and political views of the directors

What did I like from this movie?

1. I like the facts, documents and information provided about some of the situations happened before, during and after the 9/11
2. I really enjoy when he goes to the Congress and tries to give some brouchures to the congressmen, inviting them to send their sons to Iraq
3. I laughed when I saw at the beggining of the documentary when George Bush invites him to find a job in a rude way, so funny!

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. As I said, it's my personal opinion, but I believe that the documentary was more a political strategy to work against Bush on his presidencial campaign in 2004, than a documentary trying to show some facts and find answers to the problem

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: Super Size Me

Saturday, September 5, 2009 2 comments

Synopsis: Why are Americans so fat? Two words: fast food. What would happen if you ate nothing but fast food for an entire month? Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock does just that and embarks on the most perilous journey of his life. The rules? For 30 days he can't eat or drink anything that isn't on McDonald's menu; he must wolf three squares a day; he must consume everything on the menu at least once and supersize his meal if asked. Spurlock treks across the country interviewing a host of experts on fast food and an equal number of regular folk while chowing down at the Golden Arches. Spurlock's grueling drive-through diet spirals him into a physical and emotional metamorphosis that will make you think twice about picking up another Big Mac.

Starring: Morgan Spurlock, Daryl Isaacs, Lisa Ganjhu, Stephen Siegel, Bridget Bennett
Directed by: Morgan Spurlock
U.S. Rating: PG-13

Interesting documentary. I personally have been affected by this documentary! I have been a couple of times on that same situation, due to my lack of time at work and finding easier to eat almost every day junk food (especially from McDonald's and other similar junk food franchises). Even though Morgan Spurlock didn't win the battle against the high calorie food provided by McDonald's, at least, I'm sure that it might help some people to change their habits and start eating healthier.

What did I like from this movie?

1. I liked how Morgan tried to go through all the statistic facts and show the side effects not by other people's experiences and studies, but through his own life and experience

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. That it might not have be enough help to change people's lives about their unhealthy habits

I would rate this movie with a 4/5
