Movie Review: Young Adult

Friday, February 10, 2012 1 comments

Synopsis: Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature, returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart. When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate who hasn't quite gotten over high school either.
Starring: Charlize Theron, Patton Oswalt, Patrick Wilson
Directed by: Jason Reitman
U.S. Rating: R

Director Jason Reitman brings to the big screen yet another dark comedy written by Diablo Cody, the same writer/producer who wrote Juno and Jennifer's Body. I remember a while ago watching Juno... Loved, loved that film. Great cast and a pretty smart, dry adult humor. Young Adult, is a lighter and more adult version of Juno, even though, not even close as good as Juno was. Charlize Theron, well, what can we expect from her? Exactly what she did in this film, playing an outstanding performance as a very unhappy, drunk and miserable young adult who lost all sense of reality, and once again, has to face her past when she visits her old town and tries to get her old love back, even though, that love is married, with a baby boy.

Young Adult brings a dark, disturbing and dry humored comedy, even though, it wasn't exactly what I was expecting from it. I was expecting a more sarcastic, fun comedy about Marvis' sad and lost life. What I saw, and probably many people would be against my opinion, was a slow, cruel and uncomfortable comedy, boring at times (maybe I was tired, don't know) and extremely predictable.

Charlize and Patton performances were outstanding, the best of the film and probably, what really made it worth to watch.

I would rate this movie with a 2/5

Movie Review: You Again

Friday, April 1, 2011 1 comments

Synopsis: Successful PR pro Marni heads home for her older brother's wedding and discovers that he's marrying her high school arch nemesis, who's conveniently forgotten all the rotten things she did so many years ago. Then the bride's jet-setting aunt bursts in and Marni's not-so-jet-setting mom comes face to face with her own high school rival.
Starring: Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Odette Yustman, Victor Garber
Directed by: Andy Fickman
U.S. Rating: PG

I would compare You Again with a painful mix of teen films played by mature and adult people. It was like watching Mean Girls with a touch of Bring It On played by inmature grand parents... Something like that.

The film starts with the tough life of Marni (Kristen Bell) during high school. Marni, an acne-riddled high school senior with glasses and braces is being tormented and bullied by Joanna, the cheer leaders group  leader and her friends. Being so insecured about herself and what she can be and achieve, Marni video tapes her thoughts and situation at school. She hates Joanna, she can't help it.

Years later, that young, ugly, insecure Marni is history. She became a beautifu, gorgeous and higly successful professional. She's invited to her brother's wedding, but on the flight home, she find out the girl that is about to marry her brother is Joanna, that girl from high school that made her feel and go through so horrible things.

Joanna seems to be different, not the bully girl from high school. She's now involved in some important volunteer work, being sweet and careful about her new future family. Marni can't accept that change. In the other hand, Gail (Marni's mother - Jamie L Curtis), a cheer leader legend in high school meets Joanna's aunt, Ramona, who's the closest family member invited for the wedding. Ramona is a very successful business woman, but what Gail's family doesn't know is that Hail and Ramona had a history. After being best friends in high school, Gail couldn't forgive Ramona, who pushed her to the pool at Prom, right in front of the love of her life. She couldn't forget that past. When they saw each other, they inmediately brought that old revenge and, as well as their daugther and niece, they will try to hurt and do whatever it takes to beat each others.

At the end, Marni and Joanna, as well as Gail and Ramona, recognize the long road they have crossed and how much they've changed. It helped them to put all those old bad feelings and live their new lives and friendship.

Honestly, it had a very few short scenes and script lines that brought some good smiles to my face. But the truth is that it was a poor film, not funny at all. It was literally a waste of such an amazing cast.

I would rate this movie with a 1/5

Movie Review: Youth in Revolt

Saturday, February 20, 2010 0 comments

Synopsis: The journal of Nick Twisp, an 18-year old high school student, who goes on a quest to lose his virginity after his parent's breakup.

Starring: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Jean Smart, Zach Galifianakis, Erik Knudsen
Directed by: Miguel
U.S. Rating: R

Youth in Revolt brings the story of Nick Twisp, a shy and nice teenager who has no luck with girls, at all. He lives in between two dysfunctional families, his dad with his young bimbo girlfriend, and his mother with his compulsive liar boyfriend. Nick leaves for a week with his mom and Jerry to stay in a cabin. There, he meets Sheeni, a sweet girl who is deeply in loved with France and everything related with its culture. It is love at first sight for Nick, but not for Sheeni. He had to work hard and be a "bad" boy to show her how much he loved her. In that internal fight for being a bolder and more impulsive person, Nick decides to create a supplementary persona named Francois. Francois leads him to get involved in some bizarre and bold situations that will help him to show her what he is capable to do just to get her attention and love, even if his actions put him to jail. He'll face a series of crazy events and meet some weird people that will make the film enjoyable and entertaining.

Personally,I'd consider Youth in Revolt a romantic and dark teen comedy that delivered a few really good and pleasant laughs. If I had to express my thoughts about this film, I'd say that it is a pretty simple, empty and lazy plot, with an amazing cast and a Michael Cera that has finally moved timidly from his comfort zone and has accepted his first role as a bad guy, breaking the image of the nice guy from movies like Superbad or Juno. The plot didn't sell it, but I believe that putting everything together made the difference. I only had a few good laughs, but really good ones. There was something that kept me interested and entertained through the whole film, I don't know what it was, but it definitely made the difference!

What did I like from this movie?

1. I enjoyed the dialogues, there were some hilarious comments and expressions
2. There were a few hilarious situations, especially those ones with Francois. The best one was with the car inside the house (If you haven't watched it yet, you'll think of me when you watch this scene)
3. Michael Cera playing Francois. It was good to finally watch him playing a different role

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. The plot was extremely lazy and empty

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: Year One

Saturday, October 24, 2009 0 comments

Synopsis: Zed, a prehistoric would-be hunter, eats from a tree of forbidden fruit and is banished from his tribe, accompanied by Oh, a shy gatherer. On their travels, they meet Cain and Abel on a fateful day, stop Abraham from killing Isaac, become slaves, and reach the city of Sodom where their tribe is now enslaved. Zed and Oh are determined to rescue the women they love, Maya and Eema. Standing in their way is Sodom's high priest and the omnipresent Cain. Zed tries to form an alliance with Princess Innana, which may backfire. Can an inept hunter and a smart but slender and diffident gatherer become heroes and make a difference?

Starring: Jack Black, Michael Cera, Oliver Platt, David Cross, Hank Azaria
Directed by: Harold Ramis
U.S. Rating: PG-13

I've never seen thousands of years of history moving so fast! Year One took place in some of the most notorious and memorable moments in bible history (Adam & Eve, Cain & Abel, Abraham & Isaac, the Romans, etc), trying to tie few situations from these historical episodes and build a simple, silly and extremely forgettable plot. Jack Black, as always, saves the day with his never old jokes, comments and funny personality in Year One, and Michael Cera falls into the quiet humor role played in all of his recent movies. Offering such a great cast, I could expect more from this plot. Year One is just an extended trailer movie.

What did I like from this movie?

Here are the moments that made me laugh:
1. In the first scene, when Jack throws his lance to one of the hunters
2. Jack licking a turd
3. Isaac "McLovin"
4. "Stay away from my woman!"
5. The time when Adam asks for Abel at the table when they're eating dinner

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. An extremely lousy script for a really good cast

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: You, Me and Dupree

Tuesday, October 6, 2009 0 comments

Synopsis: Carl and Molly Peterson are just starting their new life together--complete with a cute house, boring neighbors, stable jobs and the routines of newlywed existence. There's just one unfortunate hitch in their perfectly constructed new world. And his name's Dupree. Randy Dupree, Carl's oldest friend and perpetual bachelor, has found himself with nowhere to go after being fired. Carl yanks his jobless/homeless pal out of the bar he's living in and invites him to temporarily crash on the couch--that's just what friends do. At first, Carl is quite pleased to have his good buddy as a permanent couch guest, while Molly bears the brunt of Dupree's immature antics. But, as Carl becomes buried in his grown-up job, he finds it harder and harder to juggle Dupree and his responsibilities as a husband. To make matters worse, Dupree uses his ample spare time to become a great companion for Molly. Even her dad and the neighbors are falling for his carefree wisdom and charm--frustrating Carl to no end. Soon, everyone (but Carl) begins to root for Dupree to stick around. But as Dupree starts to become a fixture in the Peterson's home, three becomes not just a crowd--but a full blown, hilarious catastrophe.

Starring: Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson, Matt Dillon, Michael Douglas, Amanda Detmer
Directed by: Joe Russo, Anthony Russo
U.S. Rating: PG-13

With some ups and downs in this film, we could say that Owen Wilson steels the show on this film. A great cast selected for this poorly predictable plot, offering some really funny scenes and good laughs.

What did I like from this movie?

1. I really laughed out loud at the following moments: When Dupree is looking for a job and attends some job interviews, when Dupree gets HBO, definitely! when he's with Mandy on his first date... the butter, candles and the results of this crazy mix of love, the scene when Matt Dillon is asked to get a vasectomy and the moment when Seth Rogen (the friend that can't do anything at home because his wife is more like his boss) tries to get the box of porno movies from the garage

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Michael Douglas role sucked, and even more, the way he played it
2. The plot was extremely predictable, no matter how funny it could have been. Actually, the end got boring, compared with the rest of the film

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Movie Review: The Young Victoria

Saturday, August 8, 2009 1 comments

Starring: Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend, Jim Broadbent, Miranda Richardson, Mark Strong
Directed by: Jean-Marc Vallee
U.S. Rating: PG

I watched The Young Victoria last night, and LOVED it! I'm a BIG fan of period films, and this one did NOT disappoint. There were beautiful dresses, handsome men, and a LOVE story to rival the best in history! I watched it twice last night, and I'm making Luis (my husband) watch it this morning with me. I love period dramas. If you do, you LOVE this!

I looked up how historically accurate this film is and it seems it is very much accurate. There are even scenes where the actual words are the same! WOW! Some things that were not were: Victoria's relationship with her Uncle Leopold, he was not as harsh an Victoria cared for him very much as he was like a father figure to her.

I enjoyed this movie VERY much! It is now out of DVD, so go buy it for your wife or a friend and have a girls night in! 2 Thumbs Up!
