Movie Review: Year One

Saturday, October 24, 2009
Synopsis: Zed, a prehistoric would-be hunter, eats from a tree of forbidden fruit and is banished from his tribe, accompanied by Oh, a shy gatherer. On their travels, they meet Cain and Abel on a fateful day, stop Abraham from killing Isaac, become slaves, and reach the city of Sodom where their tribe is now enslaved. Zed and Oh are determined to rescue the women they love, Maya and Eema. Standing in their way is Sodom's high priest and the omnipresent Cain. Zed tries to form an alliance with Princess Innana, which may backfire. Can an inept hunter and a smart but slender and diffident gatherer become heroes and make a difference?

Starring: Jack Black, Michael Cera, Oliver Platt, David Cross, Hank Azaria
Directed by: Harold Ramis
U.S. Rating: PG-13

I've never seen thousands of years of history moving so fast! Year One took place in some of the most notorious and memorable moments in bible history (Adam & Eve, Cain & Abel, Abraham & Isaac, the Romans, etc), trying to tie few situations from these historical episodes and build a simple, silly and extremely forgettable plot. Jack Black, as always, saves the day with his never old jokes, comments and funny personality in Year One, and Michael Cera falls into the quiet humor role played in all of his recent movies. Offering such a great cast, I could expect more from this plot. Year One is just an extended trailer movie.

What did I like from this movie?

Here are the moments that made me laugh:
1. In the first scene, when Jack throws his lance to one of the hunters
2. Jack licking a turd
3. Isaac "McLovin"
4. "Stay away from my woman!"
5. The time when Adam asks for Abel at the table when they're eating dinner

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. An extremely lousy script for a really good cast

I would rate this movie with a 3/5
