Movie Review: Hellboy

Tuesday, September 29, 2009
Synopsis: Born in the flames of hell and brought to earth to perpetrate evil, Hellboy was rescued from sinister forces by the benevolent Professor Bruttenholm, who raised him to be a hero. In Dr. Bruttenholm's secret Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.), Hellboy creates an unlikely family consisting of the telepathic "Mer-Man" Abe Sapien, and "Pyrokenetic" Liz Sherman, the woman he loves who can control fire. Hidden from the very society that they protect, they stand as the key line of defense against an evil madman who seeks to reclaim Hellboy to the dark side and use his powers to destroy mankind.

Starring: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, John Hurt, Karel Roden, Doug Jones
Directed by: Guillermo del Toro
U.S. Rating: PG-13

Hellboy is the funny tough grumpy superhero that not just kicks some butts but also shows a soft side that makes him fall in love with the girl of his dreams and be kind to the people that deserves it. An interesting and very entertaining plot with a pretty good cast. Hellboy, the bad boy of the secret Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) lives with the dilemma of trying to live and interact with humans, since the love of his life is a human woman. For this reason, he's been filing his horns down to nubs to "blend in" with humans. This love makes him to lose his perspective and get jealous of the newbie FBI assigned to work with all the members of the B.P.R.D. team and capture Rasputin and his team. An extravagant action/sci-fi movie with an entertaining plot and excellent characters. Totally recommended.

What did I like from this movie?

1. My favorite character in this movie is Abe Sapien, besides Hellboy. I really enjoyed this character and his role in this movie
2. I really enjoyed Hellboy's grumpy sense of humor, such a different hero character
3. The Nazi ninja surgery addict with the clockwork heart, scary and weird!

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. I think some people could consider this movie a "either love it or hate it", so it narrows the options for people to try to watch it, since they believe they won't like it

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

  2. I know!... it's a really good one! Mary says she doesn't like it, but she hasn't even watched it yet!

I think Hellboy 2 is as good as this one.
