Movie Review: Cashback

Tuesday, September 29, 2009
Synopsis: When art student Ben Willis dumps his girlfriend Suzy, he develops insomnia after finding out how quickly she moved on. To pass the long hours of the night, he starts working the late night shift at the local supermarket. There he meets a colorful cast of characters, all of whom have their own 'art' in dealing with the boredom of an eight-hour-shift. Ben's art is that he imagines himself stopping time. This way, he can appreciate the artistic beauty of the frozen world and the people inside it - especially Sharon, the quiet checkout girl, who perhaps holds the answer to solving the problem of Ben's insomnia.

Starring: Emilia Fox, Sean Biggerstaff, Michelle Ryan, Marc Pickering, Shaun Evans
Directed by: Sean Ellis
U.S. Rating: R

Cashback does an amazing job making you actually feel as though time has stopped. It has that deep "American Beauty" feel to it. The music gives a philosophical feel to some of the scenes. What is really great about this movie is that it is also hilarious. There are plenty of things to keep you laughing and also plenty to make you rethink life in general. Cashback is definitely a movie I would consider to be more artistic than anything else. If you appreciate artistic style movies then this one is brilliant.

What did I like from this movie?

1. I absolutely love the parts where Ben stops time in his mind. The music really brings those moments in and gives them a very artistic and philosophical feel
2. The part where the new employee mops the floor with a kind of martial arts style is hilarious!
3. They bring us in for one of those "profound" moments (while Ben is staring at a women) and we are suddenly brought back to reality with his boss smacking him in the back of the head to snap him out of it

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. I didn't care for the soccer/"football" part. I didn't think it was as funny as the rest of the movie

I would rate this movie with a 4/5
