Movie Review: The Big Lebowski

Monday, September 28, 2009
Synopsis: When "The Dude" Lebowski is mistaken for a millionaire Lebowski, two thugs urinate on his rug to coerce him into paying a debt he knows nothing about. While attempting to gain recompense for the ruined rug from his wealthy counterpart, he accepts a one-time job with high pay-off. He enlists the help of his bowling buddy, Walter, a gun-toting Jewish-convert with anger issues. Deception leads to more trouble, and it soon seems that everyone from porn empire tycoons to nihilists want something from The Dude.

Starring: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi
Directed by: Joel Coen
U.S. Rating: R

This is one of those movies that you either love or hate. I don't think there is an in between for this movie. I personally didn't like it. There were definitely some funny parts and the story line was something to figure out, but there were interludes of absolute nonsense. That mixed with psycho aggression and the constant use of profanity really just made the movie weird. I'm usually a fan for the out-of-the-ordinary but "The Big Lebowski" wasn't one I appreciated. Definitely not the worst movie I've ever seen, though.

What did I like from this movie?

1. I liked the part where the guys break into Dude's apartment and he says, "Hey, man, this is a private residence." It's funny because he doesn't realize they are breaking all of his stuff on purpose
2. All the abuse his car goes through is pretty funny

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. The profanity is abundant
2. The needless psychotic interludes seemed more like a total waste of time and efforts

I would rate this movie with a 2/5

  1. Interesting comment, I knew you'd wouldn't like it! I enjoyed this movie though. I was kind of funny and weird.

I always tell Mary: "Call me the Dude", coming from this movie.

I enjoyed the first half of this movie, but I believe the second half was kind of weird, nonsense in some moments.

Good cast, no doubt... some really good laughs. Loved all the scenes when they're playing bowling, especially, when they play against "Jesus" and the scene when the guys enter in Lebowski's apartment. Really funny!

  3. Yeah, there were definitely some funny parts which was the only reason I kept watching until the end. Walter's (John Goodman) obsession with bowling was pretty hilarious.
