Movie Review: The Rock

Sunday, July 26, 2009
Synopsis: For years Brigadier General Francis Xavier Hummel, a decorated military hero, has petitioned the United States government to honor his men who have lost their lives in service to their country during highly covert military operations by providing their families the same benefits and tributes due other war veterans. For years his efforts have been scorned. Now, angry and determined to seek justice, Hummel and a crack team of commandos seize control of Alcatraz Island, taking hostage a group of tourists. If reparations are not immediately forthcoming, Hummel plans to launch a battery of rockets charged with lethal V.X. poison gas on the San Francisco Bay area. The city's only hope for survival is FBI chemical/biological weapons expert, Stanley Goodspeed, and a top-secret federal prisoner, John Patrick Mason, who also happens to be the only known convict to have escaped the island fortress.

Starring: Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris, David Morse, John C. McGinley
Directed by: Michael Bay, Ken Bates
U.S. Rating: R

One of those great movies with such an excellent cast: Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery & Ed Harris, among other great actors. This action/suspense lot brings the best of these 3 amazing actors and provide us with such a master piece in entertainment. I totally love action-war-suspense-thriller movies, and The Rock has a little bit of all. Back in 2006, I remember the time when I went with a girl friend to watch this movie at the movie theater and was totally eclipsed by the plot and action scenes.

What did I like from this movie?

1. One of the best scenes was the moment when Nicolas Cage is being chased by the team commando, besides the scene in the bathroom, when both sides start a crossed fire.
2. The way how Sean Connery, an old English spy uses his old tricks and training to escape from his custodians and lead them (Sean Connery in a Hummer and Nicolas Cage in a yellow Ferrari) in an amazing car chasing on the the streets of San Francisco Bay Area.
3. When Nicolas Cage gets all the rockets deactivated and the bad guys killed, but the attack by f
ighter aircrafts already fired their missiles to destroy Alcatraz. Nicolas Cage is saved at the end by Sean Connery, who knew perfectly well this jail.

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. It sucked that after helping Nicolas Cage and trying to fix the situation, Ed Harris had to die. It kinda sucked, but in a good way, it was perfectly set on the plot though.

I would rate this movie with a 4/5
