Movie Review: Land of the Lost

Sunday, July 26, 2009
Synopsis: Space-time vortexes suck. Has been scientist Dr. Rick Marshall, is sucked into one and spat back through time. Way back. Now, Marshall has no weapons, few skills and questionable smarts to survive in an alternate universe full of marauding dinosaurs and fantastic creatures from beyond our world. Sucked alongside him for the adventure are crack-smart research assistant Holly and a redneck survivalist named Will. Chased by T. rex and stalked by painfully slow reptiles known as Sleestaks, Marshall, Will and Holly must rely on their only ally -- a primate called Chaka to navigate out of the hybrid dimension. Escape from this routine expedition gone awry and they're heroes. Get stuck, and they'll be permanent refugees in the Land of the Lost.

Starring: Will Ferrell, Anna Friel, Danny R. McBride
Directed by: Brad Silberling
U.S. Rating: PG-13

One of the movie recommendation I could give on this summer 2009. Land of the Lost brings a hilarious plot loaded with great effects and lots of funny scenes. On this movie, Will Ferrell brings to life Dr. Rick Marshall, a frustrated scientist who three years after being kicked out of the science department for his theory of Time warps and blowing up his interview with Matt Lauer from Today's show is reduced to working as a teacher at the George C. Page Museum until he meets Holly Cantrell whose finding urges him to create a tachyon amplifier to enable time warp travel. They go to the Devils Cave attraction where the finding was found, hiring its tour guide Will Stanton. From this moment on, the whole crazy experience starts, bringing all the fun and laughs through dozens of crazy experiences, like being chased by dinosaurs, a giant crab, dealing with Cha-Ka (an ape-caveman creature) and sleestaks, until they finally get their tachyon amplifier back, find the back door that will bring them back to the present time again.

Will Ferrell could be considered one of the weirdest and funniest actors so far. I've been following him since he was part of Saturday Night Live and later movies, and I've got the best laughs from every single of his movies, due to his extremely weird humor and boldness, for example, the time when he literally peed his pants in front of national television during the MTV Movie Awards 2001, when he presented one of the awards with Ben Stiller.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The moment when after been attacked by a giant mosquito, Dr. Rick Marshall wakes up wihout his shirt, turns over and his back has a huge and disgustingly infected bump from the mosquito attack.
2. When they get drunk after drinking the juice from the fruits found on the tree right next to the hotel pool in the middle of the desert. The whole situation, while they're swimming, laughing, eating crab and sleeping all together.
3. Definitely, one of the funniest scenes is when the T. rex chases them until they come to a small land bridge. Marshall is convinced they are safe as he explains how a T. rex has a walnut-sized brain, and is incapable of judging depth and distance. Hearing this as he stalks away, the T. rex stops in his tracks, turns, and runs full speed to jump across the chasm. Chasing them until they reach a crevice in a cave, it gives up, though still wanting to eat Marshall. Holly, knowing the dinosaur's attitude, gives him the name "Grumpy". Though Marshall didn't believe it to be possible, Grumpy's vendetta becomes more apparent when he leaves a gify, beach-ball sized walnut, gift-wrapped.
4. When they meet Will Stanton and he shows them his plan of building his Hotel and Casino, after showing him few articles he has for sale on his shop, especially, the boob cup, calling it "the persfect woman".

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. The attempt at creating tension and release with the T-rex could have been better, and the final fight with the sleestaks failed, being kinda boring.
2. Many people critizes this plot for being a dumb lazily packaged summer movie, compared with the original TV show. Gladly, I never watched the original TV show, so I can't compare both versions and go forward with just this version, which I think was dumb lazily... funny.

I would rate this movie with a 3/5
