Movie Review: The Sum of All Fears

Friday, October 30, 2009
Synopsis: When the president of Russia suddenly dies and is succeeded by a man about whom little is known, tension increases as old fears ignite new paranoia. Director of Central Intelligence Bill Cabot recruits a young analyst from the Russia desk, Jack Ryan, to supply insight and advice. Then the unthinkable happens: the capital of Chechnya is leveled by a nuclear bomb. America is quick to blame the Russians, and mistrust escalates despite Ryan's certainty that other players are at work. He is right. Terrorists bent on provoking open war between the two nations are moving behind the scenes to manufacture and escalate a conflict. When they successfully detonate a second bomb outside Baltimore during the Super Bowl, the world is pushed inexorably towards war... unless Ryan can supply the needed proof to stem the tide of disaster in time.

Starring: Ben Affleck, Morgan Freeman, James Cromwell, Liev Schreiber, Bridget Moynahan
Directed by: Phil Alden Robinson
U.S. Rating: PG-13

I personally believe that Morgan Freeman always gives a highly professional touch to all of his work. Said that, I personally believe it is one of the best action/thriller movies with Ben Affleck so far, not mentioning Paycheck. The Sum of All Fears brings a great plot about a political and war threat that is always in the air... a nuclear attack. Maybe with some cliche, the script offers a smart point of view and situations that will keep us thinking and guessing about who might be behind all the plans and situations in this film. A really entertaining and smart action movie.

What did I like from this movie?

1. I totally laughed when Morgan Freeman tells Ben Affleck to tell his girlfriend the truth about his flight and work over the phone, and after he does it, she just hung up
2. The master plan of the villians involved in the attack, a really good element of this story
3. Some really good effects, especially during the attacks and bomb explosions
4. Liev Schreiber played a good supporting role, as the agent who has to do the dirty jobs

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. There were some "obvious" situations that should have been taken cared of. For example, when the bomb explodes in Baltimore and the Marines went to get the president, they're not protected. Who would go out with no protection after a radioactive or nuclear bomb explodes?
2. The whole situation at the stadium, when they start running and keep safe the president and people are just laughing or staring at the situation. If you see the president of the U.S. running like that... don't be there just guessing... RUN!

I would rate this movie with a 3/5
