Movie Review: Mirrors

Wednesday, November 4, 2009
Synopsis: It's been nearly a year since volatile detective Ben Carson was suspended from the NYPD for fatally shooting another undercover officer, an accident that not only cost him his job, but fueled the alcoholism and anger that has alienated his wife and kids and left him crashing on his sister's couch in Queens. Desperate to pull his life together, Carson takes a job as a night watchman at the burned-out ruins of the Mayflower department store, which was destroyed by a massive fire that devoured numerous innocent lives. As Carson patrols the eerie, charred remains of the store, he begins to notice something sinister about the ornate mirrors that adorn the Mayflower walls. Reflected in the gigantic shimmering glass are horrific images that stun Carson. Beyond projecting gruesome images of the past, the mirrors appear to be manipulating reality as well. When Carson sees his own reflection being tortured, he suffers the physical effects of his fractured visions. His sympathetic but skeptical sister Angela dismisses these bizarre 'nightmares' as a consequence of his stress and guilt over the accidental shooting, but Carson's estranged wife Amy, a no-nonsense NYPD medical 2 examiner, is less forgiving. Her husband's increasingly erratic behavior frightens her, pushing his family farther away--and, she fears, it's putting their children in danger. As Carson investigates the mysterious disappearance of a Mayflower security guard and its possible connection to his ghastly visions, he realizes that a malevolent, otherworldly force is using reflections as a gateway to terrorize him and his family. Carson must somehow uncover the truth behind the mirrors--and convince Amy to help him battle the greatest evil he has ever faced.

Creepy and amazing horror movie to start a Halloween night! Kiefer Sutherland brings a horror thriller loaded with crazy, weird and scary situations. A NYPD detective who was suspended after an accident is forced to find a job to put himself together and regain the confidence of all those ones who care and love him. He starts working as a night guard for the burned and ruined Mayflower department store. The store has been in ruins due to legal discussions with the insurance company, and even though, there's nothing valuable to save, the owners want to have a night guard to custody and patrol their installations every night. As soon as he starts, he begins to see and experience weird situations through the mirrors placed and displayed in every single room and hall of this massive building. After facing a vivid experience through an image reflection of himself being on fire and getting a mysterious package from the previous night guard with some information related with the fire that destroyed this department store, he starts a personal investigation about the previous incidents on this building and the visions and events he's faced at nights. The deeper he goes on his investigation, the more dangerous and threatening it gets. He discovers that under the department store, was built an old psychiatric hospital that treated some patients with a unique technique, putting them in a room surrounded of mirrors, so they could see themselves, their condition and appearance. When he finds all this information, he discovers that his family might be in serious danger and decides to take action, trying to end all this crazy deaths. A really good and scary plot with a very, very unexpected end. Totally recommended.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The end, twisted! So unexpected!
2. All the different moments when people had their reflections on mirrors and these reflections took control over these people
3. The scene when he takes the old nun to the old room with the mirrors, the explosions and the fight with the girl that has been killing all these people

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. The kid, there was something wrong with him that wasn't connected with this plot
2. Who would be going back to such a creepy place after having a weird crazy situation like he had! He went back so many times

I would rate this movie with a 3/5
