Movie Review: The Invention of Lying

Thursday, October 29, 2009
Synopsis: In an alternate reality, lying -- even the concept of a lie -- does not even exist. Everyone -- from politicians to advertisers to the man and woman on the street -- speaks the truth and nothing but the truth with no thought of the consequences. But when a down-on-his-luck loser named Mark suddenly develops the ability to lie, he finds that dishonesty has its rewards. In a world where every word is assumed to be the absolute truth, Mark easily lies his way to fame and fortune. But lies have a way of spreading, and Mark begins to realize that things are getting a little out of control when some of his tallest tales are being taken as, well, gospel. With the entire world now hanging on his every word, there is only one thing Mark has not been able to lie his way into: the heart of the woman he loves.

Starring: Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill, Louis C.K., Jeffrey Tambor
Directed by: Ricky Gervais, Matthew Robinson
U.S. Rating: PG-13

A sad comedy plot. Not because I consider it bad, but because it is actually a sad comedy plot! I'm happy that we can leave in a world where we can balance good and bad, truth and lies, because honestly, I'd die if I had to live in a world where everyone says the truth and speak their minds out loud, in a world like the one described in this movie!

Said that, I could say that is an entertaining plot with a great cast. I could expect more from Ricky Gervais, since he's a really funny comedian. There were very few moments where Jennifer Gardner seemed to be over-acting, but nothing bad. I really enjoyed the story and some of the messages hidden in this story.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The Man in the Sky! That was excellent! So hilarious!
2. Touching moment when he has to lie to his mom when she's about to die, according with the plot
3. Tina Fey playing his secretary. Really funny when she speaks her mind out and tells him all she thinks of him

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. When he starts lying and he invites the girl he sees in the middle of the street to have sex with him because the world is about to be destroyed, as well as going to play at the casino with his friend. I personally that they ran out of ideas when they decided to include these scenes in this film. They had a plot and story to include better ideas or scenes

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

  2. Wow, this one looks pretty funny! And about what you didn't like about the movie: I personally think some TV shows and movies ONLY put some parts in so they can put it in the trailer and make more people want to see it. It may not have fit into the plot line, but it probably added a few people going to see this. They do that in TV shows all the time. I don't like it, but it is just something they do. I can't stand when in previews they show that Lois finds out Clark is actually Superman...then during the episode they take it back somehow. haha
