Movie Review: In Good Company

Thursday, October 1, 2009
Synopsis: Dan Foreman is headed for a shakeup. He is demoted from head of ad sales for a major magazine when the company he works for is acquired in a corporate takeover. His new boss, Carter Duryea, is half his age--a business school prodigy who preaches corporate synergy. While Dan develops clients through handshake deals and relationships, Carter cross-promotes the magazine with the cell phone division and "Krispity Krunch", an indeterminate snack food under the same corporate umbrella. Both men are going through turmoil at home. Dan has two daughters, Alex, age 18, and Jana, age 16, and is shocked when his wife tells him she's pregnant with a new child. Carter, in the meanwhile, is dumped by his wife of seven months just as he gets his promotion. Dan and Carter's uneasy friendship is thrown into jeopardy when Carter falls for, and begins an affair with, Dan's daughter Alex.

Starring: Dennis Quaid, Topher Grace, Scarlett Johansson, Marg Helgenberger, David Paymer
Directed by: Paul Weitz
U.S. Rating: PG-13

A genuinely romantic drama more than a romantic comedy. In Good Company was extremely well cast, offering a fresh, wise and successful plot. Dennis Quaid and Topher Grace worked amazingly well together, showing such a great spirit and chemistry between these two characters. Dennis Quaid is the veteran salesman for a major magazine company that has been sold to a new corporation. Topher Grace is the eager young salesman that has reached to the top with his great talent and has been assigned to be the new salesman manager at the magazine company, becoming Dennis' new boss. Dennis is 51 years-old, married to the beautiful Marg Helgenberger (love her!... being a huge fan of CSI) and two daughters. Topher Grace is 26 years-old, recently divorced, and no matter how professionally successful he is, he feels alone, looking for acceptance, friendship and love. While he tries to become a friend instead of a boss, he meets Dennis' daughter (Scarlett Johansson), daddy's little girl that has just moved out and started college. They begin to maintain a secret romantic relationship that later is discovered by Dennis, something that affects their friendship and relationship. At the end, they put all these issues aside, work together in an important client and account and achieve a successful deal. The only problem... the company has been sold again, and Topher has been fired and Dennis gets his old job back. Dennis tries to offer a job to Topher, but he's rejected it and will move to start again with a different professional perspective.

A great romantic drama/comedy that offers such an amazing and well-played plot. 100% recommended!

What did I like from this movie?

1. The moment when Topher gets his Porshe, the love and reverence he shows for this car at the car dealer, and as soon as he leaves the car dealer, he's hit by a truck!
2. The moment when Topher invites all the team to work on a Sunday and after the meeting (that everyone hated) he auto-invites himself to Dennis' house for dinner
3. The basketball game, one of the hilarious moments in this movie, when Dennis tries to dunk the ball
4. Even though the final is kind of sad, I really enjoyed it, because it offers something different, no matter is not the typical happy movie end
5. Dennis and Topher worked brilliantly together, they showed such a great chemistry

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. I didn't like that he left and didn't take the job offer, being such a really nice gesture from Dennis, but hey... he took a decision to move and define his professional goals somewhere else

I would rate this movie with a 4/5
