Movie Review: District 9

Sunday, September 6, 2009
Synopsis: Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them.

Starring: Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, Nathalie Boltt, Sylvaine Strike, John Sumner
Directed by: Neill Blomkamp
U.S. Rating: R

I'm not that into aliens, but I must say that District 9 is a must! I watched this movie last night and it was totally awesome! From the very first moment, it promised to be a fresh and different Sci-Fi movie, and that's exactly what we got. The main actor plays a role that totally involves you in the plot and drama about his personal dilemma and situation. This plot offers you unexpected situations and moments filled with action, suspense, drama and incredible effects. Honestly, I didn't expect this movie be so good, going through a documentary-style film about this apartheid applied to Aliens in Johannesburg, jumping to a guerrilla war, until the drama and dilemma of this human turning alien... trying to help an Alien that promised to help him back, so he could get back with his family. Considered one of the best Sci-Fi movie in years, I totally recommend this movie to all those Sci-Fi lovers and people looking for a fresh and different movie.

What did I like from this movie?

1. I thought for a moment that the whole movie would be like the first 15-20 minutes, a documentary-style about this apartheid applied to Aliens in Johannesburg, but then it just turned into such a great action/thriller/drama story
2. The moment when they find that the guy is transforming in an alien, when they see his hand at the hospital
3. The weapons made and used by the aliens in District 9, really amazing!
4. The aliens looked so real!
5. I really enjoyed the realism showed and used on this movie with the camera and film used.

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. We'll never know if the alien comes to help the guy! We know what happens with the guy, since it is the last scene, but we just have the option to assume that the alien will accomplish his promise

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

  1. Eh, I was upset about this movie. I hated the beginning. I hated that the emotions were all over the place. I wasn't thrilled by how the aliens looked, even though the CGI was flawless.

I was slightly disappointed in it overall. I'd give it a 6/10 :( I wanted "more".

  2. Interesting!... I believe Mary got that same impression! (she thought it was a weird movie, but... she's not into aliens movies at all)

It was "different" for me, especially because you don't expect those emotions all over the place in a "Sci-Fi/action" movie with aliens.

About the aliens, that's what I wanted to express... it's not about their look, but all the CGI involved with them and the rest of the scenes.

  3. You liked it?!?!?! You're crazy! I couldn't even finish it! I'm SO not into aliens...and all the shots were all over the place. I wasn't sure what was happening....
    Thumbs down for me!

  5. Mark and I LOVE Peter Jackson and Weta!! We haven't seen this movie yet because Mark heard it was gory...and neither of us are a fan of gore. "The Descent" was gory with bad digital visual effects and horrible acting...but I still liked it. Maybe we'll give District 9 a try simply for the flawless effects. Thanks for the review. It helps!

  7. By the way, I don't see "The Watchmen" reviewed. Have you seen it? I want you to see it and tell me what you think. I think I've only heard "I loved it" or "I hated it" comments and I'm curious to see what you think of it.

  8. I'd like to hear your comments once you see District 9

About Watchmen, yes, I watched it but I didn't understand it. I'll watch it again over the weekend and will post the review.
