Movie Review: Casino Royale

Monday, September 21, 2009
Synopsis: James Bond's first 007 mission takes him to Madagascar, where he is to spy on a terrorist Mollaka. Not everything goes as planned and Bond decides to investigate, independently of the MI6 agency, in order to track down the rest of the terrorist cell. Following a lead to the Bahamas, he encounters Dimitrios and his girlfriend, Solange. He learns that Dimitrios is involved with Le Chiffre, banker to the world's terrorist organizations. Secret Service intelligence reveals that Le Chiffre is planning to raise money in a high-stakes poker game in Montenegro at Le Casino Royale. MI6 assigns 007 to play against him, knowing that if Le Chiffre loses, it will destroy his organization. 'M' places Bond under the watchful eye of the beguiling Vesper Lynd. At first skeptical of what value Vesper can provide, Bond's interest in her deepens as they brave danger together--and even torture at the hands of Le Chiffre. In Montenegro, Bond allies himself with Matthis, MI6's local field agent, and Felix Leiter, who is representing the interests of the CIA. The marathon game proceeds with dirty tricks and violence, raising the stakes beyond blood money and reaching a terrifying climax.

Starring: Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Mads Mikkelsen, Eva Green, Jeffrey Wright

U.S. Rating: PG-13

I'd simply describe this movie as an extraordinary production and action plot. Casino Royale offers such a well defined and smartly written story mixed with a incredibly talented cast. It's been a long time since I enjoyed a good James Bond production. I'm not saying that the most recent movies from this 007 franchise were bad, they were actually really entertaining. To be honest, Pierce Brosnan was a classic handsome secret agent, but all his action scenes were so Hollywood style, so unreal. They were more like action/thriller scenes faced by a super hero from a comic book instead of a real MI6 secret agent. Daniel Craig has brought the real character to the 007 secret agent... the very intriguing and charismatic personality needed for the James Bond role that we've been enjoying for over 50 years. This plot was meant to be a complete new and fresh plot, with its own timeline, not attached to any previous film. This movie offers amazing action scenes, remarkable locations and a great script. 101% Recommended!

What did I like from this movie?

1. I Personally believe that Casino Royale is one of the top 3 best James Bond movies of all times, no doubt about it
2. The complete initial action scenes (Starting at the snakes fight, the persecution and the situation at the embassy) give a solid idea of the quality and realism that Casino Royale could offer to all its viewers. I remember the two times I went to watch this movie at the cinema and it was interesting how the whole audience were amazed and ecstatic with these scenes
3. Eva Green looks amazing, the classic and sexy Bond girl
4. I really enjoyed not just the spectacular stunts, but the realism in every fighting scene. Really entertaining
5. The whole classy scenes at the casino, while they were playing Poker. Such a distinctive part of a James Bond movie, as well as the Austin Martin
6. The whole scene at the building in Venice. The adrenaline and action involved in this scene
7. The moment when Le Chiffre captures Bond and prepares him to be tortured, naked with a knotted rope. So funny when he says "Now the whole world's gonna know that you died scratching my balls!"
8. The final scene, when Bond hunts Mr White down, giving the obvious idea that it would be the beginning of the next sequel

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. The only scene I didn't enjoy or that I believe didn't look so real was the fight at Bodies, the exhibition in Miami, when Dimitrios discovers Bond and tries to kill him with a knife. I believe it was a bit entertaining though

I would rate this movie with a 5/5

  2. I can't believe we haven't seen this one yet. Especially since you gave it a perfect rating!! I'll have to get it. I originally didn't want to see this one because 1) I didn't think the new Bond was very cute and 2) I hear there is no Moneypenny in it. What's up with that?? ;)

  3. Amy, that's a must! You've got to watch this one and Quantum of Solace

You're right, Miss Moneypenny is not in these movies, but maybe they'll consider to put her back in the next one :)
