Movie Review: The Mechanic

Monday, January 31, 2011 0 comments

Synopsis: Arthur Bishop is a 'mechanic' - an elite assassin with a strict code and unique talent for cleanly eliminating targets. It's a job that requires professional perfection and total detachment, and Bishop is the best in the business. But when his mentor and close friend Harry is murdered, Bishop is anything but detached. His next assignment is self-imposed - he wants those responsible dead. His mission grows complicated when Harry's son Steve approaches him with the same vengeful goal and a determination to learn Bishop's trade. Bishop has always acted alone but he can't turn his back on Harry's son. A methodical hit man takes an impulsive student deep into his world and a deadly partnership is born. But while in pursuit of their ultimate mark, deceptions threaten to surface and those hired to fix problems become problems themselves.
Starring: Jason Statham, Ben Foster, Donald Sutherland, Tony Goldwyn, Mini Anden

I must start this personal review with a weird situation faced last Friday night when I went to watch the film at our local theatre. I got there and asked the guy for a ticket. He told me... "Sorry! The Mechanic is sold out!"... I got really pissed, since I was planning for the last two weeks to go and watch it. Anyway, as soon as the guy told me that, he inmediately said... "Do you want a ticket for The King's Speech instead?"... I tried  for a few seconds to digest his offer and finally had to respond... "What the heck has The King's Speech to do with The Mechanic?! Is it an action film by any chance?!"... Obviously the guy answered me "No", so I finally told him... "there's your answer :)".

Anyway, I had the chance to go and watch it on Saturday evening. I was looking for watching it for a while, so I had some really good expectations. The film was pretty good. Obviously, it was a remake of a really tough classic with Charles Bronson, the only problem? Jason Statham didn''t deliver what we were expecting. He did I really good job though, but we missed something...

As said before, The Mechanic is a remake of one of Charles Bronson's classic from 1972. The film starts with Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) killing one of his targets, a very wealthy and powerful Colombian drug dealer. Not even his amazing and large personal army can stop Arthur to accomplish his objective, why? Because he's a hit man who performs his jobs cleanly, without leaving a trace of his work. As he says it later "The best jobs are the ones where they never knew you were there". He's a professional focused in every single detail related with his targets, he studies them, he learns from them, he knows every single detail and secrets about them and their lives.

Arthur works exclusively for an international secret organization, which has very strict rules: even those members who are becoming slightly unreliable are assassinated, long before they jeopardize their organization. Henry McKenna (Donald Sutherland),  is another hit man working for the same organization. He is not just like Arthur's father and close friend, but his mentor. He's taught him everything he knows and he's the person who sets the jobs for him.

When Arthur gets his next assignment, he finds out that his target is Henry. He refuses to take action against Henry without knowing the reasons of this decision, so he meets with the head of this secret organization. He's told that Henry has become a threat for the organization, since he leaked some information in a recent job done in Cape Town, South Africa. Because of this leaked information, all the team assigned for this job was assassinated.

Arthur, being the best in the business, doesn't hesitate and kills his mentor, Henry. Right after Henry is buried, Arthur meets Steve McKenna (Ben Foster), Henry's son. Steve is a mess, he can't coup with the death of his father and he's planning to take revenge on this situation killing random people. Arthur stops him and, even though he feels reluctant during the first couple of days, he decides to become his mentor.

Arthur gives Steve his first assignment while he's being trained, to kill another hit man working for a competitor. Even when Arthur taught him how to do the job clean, Steve decides to do it "his way"... a very messy and rude way. When Arthur gets his next assignment, he decides to share it with Steve and work together, but a very small detail destroys their "clean" job and it turns into a violent operation.

While they escape, Arthur finds out on his way home that he was framed and "The Company" he works for made him kill his best friend for the wrong reasons. He takes it personally and decides to go against "The Company", killing every single one of them.

While preparing for this last job and revenge, Steve finds something that shows him Arthur was his father's assassin. He works with Arthur and helps him to complete this last job and revenge against the people who planned his dad's assassination and then tries to take revenge against his mentor and father's assassin, Arthur.

Personally, I really enjoyed the film. It had a really good action-packed plot and direction. They tried to keep that interaction between the modern days and the 70's, including of the old filming action-style, something I really liked and enjoyed. As said before, the downside of this film was the lead role. Jason Statham is extremely good looking like the man for the job, but there was something missing that I can't really identify yet. Ben Foster played a really good supporting role as Steve. I really enjoyed his work on this film.

I haven't watched the original film from 1972, but now that I watched and enjoyed this one, I will definitely look for watching Charles Bronson's original version. You can find more about it here.

I would rate this movie with a high 3/5

Movie Review: Toy Story 3

Saturday, January 29, 2011 0 comments

Synopsis: Woody and Buzz had accepted that their owner Andy would grow up someday, but what happens when that day arrives? In the third installment, Andy is preparing to depart for college, leaving his loyal toys troubled about their uncertain future.
Starring: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Ned Beatty, Don Rickles
Directed by: Lee Unkrich
U.S. Rating: G

Woody and Buzz Lightyear are back in what I personally believe, the BEST animated film I've ever watched so far. I've been a huge fan of Toy Story, like most of every single person that has seen the films. We could consider that Toy Story was Pixar's master piece, their Mona Lisa. Obviously, Pixar was working directly with Disney for this project, but this project gave them the unique reputation and success this small team needed to make it big, just like they've been doing with all their animated films.

Andy has become a young man and he's ready to enjoy his new adventure moving to college. While he's packing, he's facing a dilemma with his toys. He has not played with them in years and they feel forgotten and abandoned. When his mom asks him if he wants to donate his toys, Andy decides to take Woody with him to college and intends to store the other toys in the attic. By accident, Andy's mom throws the other toys away, making them think they are no longer wanted; they escape and decide to climb in a box to be donated to the Sunnyside Daycare. Woody tries by any possible way to save his friends before they get into the box, but then he'll be forced to travel with them to their new destination, Sunnyside, while he tries to convince them and explain them that they've been put in this situation by mistake. Andy didn't want to donate them, but they were put away by accident.

Andy's toys are welcomed by the numerous toys at Sunnyside, and given a tour of the seemingly perfect play-setting by Lots-O'-Huggin' Bear (a.k.a. Lotso), Big Baby and Ken, who Barbie falls for. All of the toys are quickly enamored with their new home, leaving steadfast Woody alone to attempt to return to Andy.  He finds a way to escape from Sunnyside, but in his attempt, Woody is picked up outside the school by the imaginative toddler Bonnie. She takes him home and plays with him along with her other toys, who are well treated, happy, and readily welcome Woody. Woody is elated until he hears about Lotso from Chuckles the sad clown. Lotso, along with Big Baby and Chuckles, were once accidentally lost by their original owner, Daisy. The three found their way back to Daisy's home, but Lotso saw that he had been replaced. Though Chuckles realized the truth, Lotso, embittered, convinced Big Baby that they were abandoned, and used Big Baby's size to take mafia-like control over the toys at Sunnyside.  To be honest, this Big Baby is FREAKY!!!

Worried for his friends, Woody hurries back to the daycare and finds that they have been put on task to be played with the rambunctious youngest toddlers. They are also kept under guard at night by Buzz whom Lotso has reverted to demonstration mode restoring his original "Space Ranger" persona and allying with him.

Woody rejoins his friends and they work out an escape plan involving the garbage dumpster. In the process, Buzz is accidentally reset into a Spanish-speaking mode during an attempt to restore him to normal.  I personally believe this is one of the most hilarious moments on this film! The toys reach the dumpster, but are headed off by Lotso and his gang. As a garbage truck approaches, Woody explains to Big Baby that Lotso has lied to him and that his owner still loved him, whereupon Big Baby lifts and throws him into the dumpster. Unfortunately, Lotso manages to pull Woody in with him just as the garbage truck makes it. Woody's friends board the truck to rescue him, during which Buzz is hit by a falling television while saving Jessie, finally returning to his old self. The toys find themselves at the local landfill in Tri-County and are soon pulled onto a conveyor belt leading to an burn pit. They help Lotso to reach an emergency-stop button, only to have Lotso betray them and leave them to be burned. Believing they are at their last moments, they hold hands, but are rescued in time by the squeeze toy aliens using a giant claw. Realizing that being burned in an incinerator is much worse than Andy's attic, they take back everything they said bad about Andy. The toys initially vow revenge on Lotso but Woody successfully convinces them that Lotso is not worth it. They return to Andy's home, while Lotso is found by a garbage truck driver and is tied to the front grille of the truck as a decoration.

At Andy's house, Woody climbs back into the box with Andy's college supplies while the other toys resign themselves to the attic. Woody has a last minute inspiration, and leaves a note to Andy on the toys' box. Andy, mistaking it for a note from his mom, takes the box to Bonnie's home, introduces his old toys to Bonnie and gives her the toys to play with. In the end, Bonnie recognizes Woody, laying at the bottom of the box, to Andy's surprise. Andy is initially reluctant to give him to her, but eventually does so and then spends some time playing with her before he departs. Woody and the other toys find themselves wanted and played with again, and learn through notes passed in Bonnie's backpack that Barbie, Ken and Big Baby have improved the life of all the toys at Sunnyside.

One of my most recent surprises about this film is its Oscars Awards Nomination for Best Film. It was simply amazing to see that nomination. I'm totally convinced it will win the nomination for Best Animated Film, but the strong script, the fresh story and terrific characters are so perfectly assembled and  brilliantly written that I could easily say that some important directors, producers and film creators should learn so many, many things from this master piece.

It was not just a huge pleasure to watch in theaters, but it is definitely a MUST to have in Blu Ray or DVD as part of your personal collection.

I would rate this movie with a HUGE 5/5

Movie Trailer: Scream 4

Friday, January 28, 2011 0 comments

It's been 10 years since this famous franchise brought its last sequel to the big screen. 2011 will bring a new fresh sequel, this time, with new rules and cast. Dimension Films has released the second movie trailer for the upcoming film, Scream 4. Starring Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Hayden Panettiere and Rory Culkin.
Synopsis: Ten years have passed, and Sidney Prescott, who has put herself back together thanks in part to her writing, is visited by the Ghostface Killer.

Release Date: April 15th, 2011

I just found out that a new sequel for SWAT will be released this next March 2011. Obviously, it won't bring the same cast (Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, Jeremy Renner, Michelle Rodriguez, LL Cool J and Olivier Martinez), but it seems that it will be a good action film, at least, it is what I can see on this trailer. Sony Pictures will release the film on DVD and Blu Ray in March 1st.
Synopsis: A Los Angeles SWAT officer transferred to Detroit to train the city’s SWAT team on anti-terrorism and homeland security measures. Then a routine hostage situation turned into a deadly vendetta as an ex-government agent blamed the officer and the SWAT team for the death of his love. The officer and the team must use all their skills to protect themselves from the trained killer.

Spanish Director, Fernando Barreda Luna, brings what seems to be a horror master piece to the big screen. Following the same real video style of successful scary horror films, like Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project, Fernando Barreda brings a film based on a footage found in the Quintanilla family, the same place where the family was found murdered. It seems to be pretty scary, so I'm sure it will be such an amazing film to watch. The film has been displayed at the Slamdance Festival which takes place on January 22 in Park City, Utah. It means that it should be in theaters around the world later this year.
Synopsis: In April 4th of 2010, Quintanilla family was found murdered in their country side house. Police reported the existence of 37 hours of recorded evidence. "Atrocious" shows the real images of such evidence. Quintanilla family traveled to their old farm house in Sitges, where Christian and July investigated about the Legend of the Girl in the Garraf woods. Both of them used to record all day whatever they did. On the fifth day of their arrival they were found dead under strange circumstances. ATROCIOUS shows the last five days of life for Cristian Quintanilla and his siblings. It also shows the strange situations that they lived in those moments and which remain unexplained.

Movie Review: The Dilemma

Thursday, January 27, 2011 0 comments

Synopsis: Since college, confirmed bachelor Ronny and happily married Nick have been through thick and thin. Now partners in an auto design firm, the two pals are vying to land a dream project that would launch their company. With Ronny's girlfriend, Beth, and Nick's wife, Geneva, by their sides, they're unbeatable. But Ronny's world is turned upside down when he inadvertently sees Geneva out with another man and makes it his mission to get answers. As the amateur investigation dissolves his world into comic mayhem, he learns that Nick has a few secrets of his own. Now, with the clock ticking and pressure mounting on the biggest presentation of their careers, Ronny must decide what will happen if he reveals the truth to his best friend.
Starring: Rebecca Spence, Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Jennifer Connelly, Winona Ryder
Directed by: Ron Howard
U.S. Rating: PG-13

The Dilemma was one of the first comedy films I planned to watch this year 2011. I was basically expecting the film since I watched the first trailer few months ago. The content showed on these trailers sold it completely. Even more, knowing that it was directed by Ron Howard.

The film is about the story of Ronny (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Kevin James), two best friends from college. They run a very sucessful business building green energy & electrical engines for cars. Their objective is to get a good deal with Chrysler and build electric engines for their sport cars. Ronny has evaded to "pop the question" to her girlfriend Beth (Jennifer Connelly), even though, she's been patiently waiting for that moment. Nick is married with Geneva (Winona Ryder).

Since Ronny is being pushed by Geneva and Nick to propose Beth, he finally decides to prepare the "perfect environment, place and moment" to ask her to marry him. He has decided to do it at the botanical garden. While he's planning the small details with the manager, he sees Geneva walking with another guy called Zip (Channing Tatum) and hiding among the trees and gardens. He finally sees what he didn't really want to see... His best friend's wife kissing another man.

Now, Ronny is facing a very difficult dilemma... Tell his dear friend that his wife is cheating on him with another man. While he's thinking of the best way to tell him, he also faces the difficult situation of affecting their all project due date and deal with Chrysler and not deliver the new engine, since the brain of all this engineering project is... Nick. He knows if he tells Nick, he'll put so much stress on him and will finally take his mind away from their project and plans.

Trying to "solve" the situation, Ronny tries to deal with this problem with Geneva and Zip, but it will turn into something even more confusing. He's also being affected, not attending his meetings and dead lines with Chrysler, and worst of all, creating some tense situations with his dear love Beth.

At the end, the truth flourishes. All these four people have to face their own dilemmas and solve their problems the best way they can, and most important, prevent these situations in the future.

Well, to be honest, I should start saying that the team and company in charged of the film marketing and promotion failed BIG time delivering the true gender of this film. Why do I say this? Since the very first time I watched the trailer several months ago, I was extremely excited because I genuinely thought it was going to be a black comedy drama, but it turned to be a cynical dramedy. It had some good insights into friendship. There was no chemistry between these two couples, especially between Ronny & Beth. Being such a HUGE fan of Jennifer Connelly, I'd expect it to see a good chemistry, but it just failed.

Sadly, it was a just a forgettable film that could have been such a great comedy (or even a great dramedy), having such a great cast. Huge fail for Universal Pictures for selling us the film as a funny comedy, but it was far from it, it was definitely a drama with a few laughable moments.

I would rate this movie with a 2/5

Movie Trailer: Sucker Punch

Wednesday, January 26, 2011 0 comments

Warner Brothers has released the movie trailer for the upcoming film, Sucker Punch. Starring Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone and Jamie Chung. I'm skeptical about these kind of films. We've had similar films in the past, and they have suck big time, so let's see how it goes for this one.
Synopsis: Close your eyes. Open your mind. You will be unprepared. A young girl's dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what's real and what is imaginary. She has been locked away against her will, but Babydoll has not lost her will to survive. Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls--the outspoken Rocket, the street-smart Blondie, the fiercely loyal Amber and the reluctant Sweet Pea - to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue, Madam Gorski and the High Roller. Led by Babydoll, the girls engage in fantastical warfare against everything from samurais to serpents, with a virtual arsenal at their disposal. Together, they must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive. But with the help of a Wise Man, their unbelievable journey - if they succeed - will set them free.

Here's a new documentary from the director of Bruce Almighty, The Nutty Professor and Ace Ventura. I Am seems to be a pretty interesting documentary about his own life after facing a life-changing accident. The documentary will be released next month, February 2011.
Synopsis: Explores what happened to filmmaker Tom Shadyac after a cycling accident left him incapacitated, possibly for good. Though he ultimately recovered, he emerged a changed man. Disillusioned with life on the A-list, he sold his house, moved to a mobile home community, and decided to start life anew. Armed with nothing but his innate curiosity and a camera crew, Shadyac embarks upon a journey to discover how he as an individual, and we as a race, can improve the way we live. Appearing on-screen as character, commentator, guide, and even, at times, guinea pig, Shadyac meets with a variety of thinkers and doers--remarkable men and women from the worlds of science, philosophy, and faith.

One of the romantic comedy films for 2011 will be released this next March, 4th. Starring Josh Radnor, Malin Akerman, Kate Mara, Richard Jenkins and Zoe Kazan, Happythankyoumoreplease promises to bring a light romantic comedy to its viewers.

The film centers on Sam and Rasheen, a writer and foster care child who meet when Rasheen is abandoned on the subway. I'm happy! The 83rd Academy Awards Nominations have finally been announced early this morning, January 25th.  Even though, I'm not happy for that... I'm happy because today is my birthday! Anyway, just a few weeks ago, we enjoyed the Golden Globes Awards Ceremony and just a few days ago the BAFTA Awards Nominations were announced. I haven't had the chance to watch some of the nominated films yet,  but I'll try to watch them before the Awards ceremony (at least, the ones that have come to theaters yet!). Some nominated films were more than expected for us, some of them are a complete surprise. The great news is that it seems that we'll have a great competition this year, with such amazing films and visual work.

For example, it was such a pleasant surprise to see Toy Story 3 nominated for best picture! I DO believe it deserves it. I haven't seen an animated film with such a strong script and amazing quality. Maybe it won't get the Best Picture Award, but I'm 100% sure it will get the Awards for Best Animated Film and Writing (Adapted Screenplay). It is also interesting to notice that the nominations have been hoarded by a very few list of amazing films: The Social Network, The King's Speech, 127 Hours, True Grit, The Fighter and Black Swan. I'm totally affraid of giving my predictions, since it will be such a close competition! I'm disappointed with the few nominations announced for Inception, one of my TOP favorite films of all times. Anyway, it will be such an interesting ceremony this year, strong competitors and amazing films!

The 2011 Oscar ceremony will take place Sunday, February 27, 2011, hosted by Anne Hathaway and James Franco at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

No doubt that Battle: Los Angeles will be one of the mega hits this 2011. It is one of my top "must see" movies to watch this year. Columbia Pictures has released the trailer for the upcoming action film, Battle: Los Angeles, starring Aaron Eckhart, Bridget Moynahan, Michelle Rodriguez, Michael Pena and Adetokumboh M Cormack, directed by Jonathan Liebesman.
Synopsis: For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world -- Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world's great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It's up to a Marine staff sergeant and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they've ever encountered before.

Adam Sandler brings a new comedy to the big screen. Columbia Tri-Star Pictures released the movie trailer for the upcoming comedy film, Just Go With It. Starring Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman and Brooklyn Decker, this film seems to offer the kind of comedy we all expect from the most recent and successful films with Adam Sandler. Definitely one of the films in my "must see" list for this year, 2011
Synopsis: A plastic surgeon, romancing a much younger schoolteacher, enlists his loyal assistant to pretend to be his soon to be ex-wife, in order to cover up a careless lie. When more lies backfire, the assistant's kids become involved, and everyone heads off for a weekend in Hawaii that will change all their lives.

I'm used to see Paul Bettany always playing dark roles in successful films. I'm glad he finally leads what seems to be such an amazing dark suspense thriller. Sony Pictures has released the movie trailer for the upcoming film, Priest, one of the most expected films for this new year, 2011.
Synopsis: A legendary Warrior Priest from the last Vampire War now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on an obsessive quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece's boyfriend, a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.

Movie Review: Dead Snow

Sunday, January 23, 2011 0 comments

Synopsis: The group of friends had all they would need for a successful Easter vacation; cabin, skis, snowmobile, toboggan, copious amounts of beer and a fertile mix of the sexes. Certainly, none of them had anticipated not returning home alive! However, the Nazi-zombie battalion haunting the mountains surrounding the aptly named Oksfjord (Axefjord) had other plans...

Directed by: Tommy Wirkola
U.S. Rating: Not Rated

A woman, Sara, (Ane Dahl Torp) is being chased through the snows of Norway. She is ultimately cornered and eaten by zombies in World War II Schutzstaffel (SS) uniforms.

Seven students on Easter vacation arrive at a small cabin near Øksfjord. The cabin is owned by Sara, Vegard's (Lasse Valdal) girlfriend. The group begins to drink and party until a mysterious hiker (Bjørn Sundquist) arrives. He tells them the dark history of the region; during World War II, a force of Einsatzgruppe, led by Standartenführer Herzog (Ørjan Gamst), occupied the area. For three years the Nazis abused and tortured the local people. Near the end of the war, with Germany's defeat looming, the soldiers looted all the town's valuables. However, the citizens stage an uprising and ambushed the Nazis, killing many. The survivors, including Herzog, were chased into the mountains, and it was assumed that they all froze to death. The hiker then continues on his way.

The next morning Vegard takes the group's snowmobile out to look for Sara. He stumbles on a tent in which he discovers the disemboweled body of the hiker from the previous night. He continues his search when he falls through the snow into a cave. Meanwhile, after it gets dark, the other students find an old wooden box filled with valuables hidden under the floor. They celebrate by haphazardly throwing the treasure above their heads, and one pockets a gold coin. They eventually decide to stow it back where it came from. Erlend (Jeppe Laursen) goes to the outhouse where Chris (Jenny Skavlan) meet him and the two have sex. On her way to the outhouse, Chris inadvertently drops a gold coin, which awakes a Nazi zombie. After the liaison, Erlend returns to the group. Chris stays to use the outhouse but is attacked and murdered. The others go outside to look for her, finding Sara's rucksack buried in the snow.

The zombies arrive at the cabin. Erlend (Jeppe Laursen) is killed before the remaining students manage to seal the windows and door and survive the night. Vegard comes around in the cave, discovering WWII German firearms and helmets, as well as Sara's severed head. Vegard is attacked by zombies and is badly bitten in the neck by one. He manages to kill them and escape on the snowmobile, which he equips with a machine gun.

Meanwhile, the remaining four students in the cabin decide to split up. The two men, Martin (Vegar Hoel) and Roy (Stig Frode Henriksen), attempt to distract the zombies, while the two women, Hanna (Charlotte Frogner) and Liv (Evy Kasseth Røsten), run for the cars and go for help. En route to the cars, the girls are ambushed and Liv is killed. While she is being disemboweled, she manages to destroy several of the zombies by activating one of their hand grenades. After killing two zombies Hanna is chased to the edge of a cliff by a zombie. She turns and faces the zombie and stomps on the ground, causing the ice to crack, and both of them to fall. Both survive, and are submerged in snow; Hanna digs her way out and kills the zombie.

Martin and Roy, holed up in the cabin, accidentally set fire to it with Molotov cocktails. As they escape, they discover that the shed next to the cabin contains numerous power tools, with which they equip themselves. More zombies attack, but Martin and Roy manage to fend them off with the aid of Vegard, who returns with the snowmobile. However, Vegard is killed during the fight. Herzog arrives with another group of zombies, including SS men, but Martin and Roy manage to kill them all. Martin is bitten on the arm and cuts it off with a chainsaw to avoid turning into a zombie, but a zombie bites him on the genitals. Herzog then raises many other zombies from all around and the two students run. While on the run, Roy is hit in the head by Herzog, disoriented runs into a tree and is disemboweled.

Martin comes to realize that the zombies are after the box in the cabin. He runs to the burnt-out remains of the cabin, and gives the box to Herzog. He manages to get away, and, upon reaching the car, a coin from the box falls out of Martin's pocket. Swearing, he looks around to see Herzog smashing the car window.

This movie is a Norwegian comedy horror film and it was much better than I originally thought it was going to be. It had some hilarious parts that I wouldn't have thought up myself, like when one guy is trying to defend the snow cabin by throwing a cocktail they set on fire out the window at a zombie but miss the window and end up setting the cabin on fire instead. There was still a lot of classic zombie stuff going on but adding in Nazi zombies, a surprise ending, and some pretty funny stuff at times and you have a decent film. Worth the watch if you like zombies (and I DO)! It is in Norwegian, so as long as you aren't one of those people who don't like having to read their movies (or if you know Norwegian...) then it isn't bad. I thought the plot wasn't half bad, even if it DID have some stereotypical zombie scenes. Acting wasn't the best you'll see around but wasn't the worst either. The Nazi zombie costumes were pretty good and special effects not bad, as well. It wasn't necessarily scary (unless you get scared over the gory stuff) since it was supposed to have comedy in it. Worth watching if you like zombie comedy films that are subtitled.

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

Synopsis: Two college students discover a strange circus tent which servces as a breeding ground for "killer clowns" who terrorize a small town.
Starring: Grant Cramer, Suzanne Snyder, John Allen Nelson, Royal Dano, John Vernon
Directed by: Stephen Chiodo
U.S. Rating: PG-13

An army of sadistic extraterrestrial life forms (who resemble clowns) land their circus tent ship in the sleepy American town of Crescent Cove (filmed in Watsonville/Santa Cruz, California). Mike Tobacco (Cramer) and Debbie Stone (Snyder), a couple out for the romantic evening, spot the newcomers and, thinking the ship was a shooting star, decide to investigate. They soon encounter the Klowns and barely escape capture, while the remaining teenagers are quickly killed by the aliens. Mike and Debbie rush into town to warn others of the impending danger while the Klowns follow them into town.

Naturally, they first try to warn the police. Sgt. Mooney, the police sergeant, is convinced that the two are nothing more than kids trying to pull a prank. They are viewed with equal skepticism by another police officer, Dave Hanson (John Allen Nelson), Debbie's ex-boyfriend.

Meanwhile, the Klown Army marches into Crescent Cove, inflicting a massive genocide during their occupation. They harvest the unsuspecting population, blasting random victims with a ray gun that cocoons them with cotton candy like substance, with lethal results. The Klown Army uses a variety of seemingly innocent methods to ensnare their victims, such as killer shadow puppets, bloodhound-like balloon animals, and a ray gun that looks like a child's toy. Since the methods themselves appear whimsical, the townspeople don't realize they are in danger until it's too late.

Hanson is taken to the hills, where he sees the hole in the ground. Thinking Mike a liar Hanson places him under arrest. Hanson only starts to believe that something is going on when he discovers Bob McReed's broken glasses. Meanwhile, Mooney also discovers the truth when one of the Klowns appears at the police station, although he thinks it all an elaborate hoax till it is too late.

When Officer Hanson sees a Klown use a Tyrannosaurus rex shadow puppet to capture a group of townspeople waiting for a bus, he is finally convinced of the danger, and offers to help Mike and Debbie (who have also recruited the Terenzi brothers, a pair of local goof-offs who drive an ice cream truck). Hanson later arrives at the police station and discovers Mooney dead and being used as a puppet by the Klown that slew him. A horrified Hanson shoots the Klown several times with no effect until he shoots the Klown's nose; at that point, the Klown dramatically spins around until it eventually explodes, becoming the first Klown to be killed by a human.

While the town is being slaughtered, Debbie is attacked twice and taken away by the Klowns in a balloon.

Debbie is taken back to the Klowns' "Big Top" circus tent-spaceship. Mike, Officer Hanson, and the Terenzi brothers pursue them. It is there that they discover why the Klown Army has been capturing people. By cocooning them inside their cotton candy, the Klowns gelatinize the humans' bodies into a liquid that is digestible. Vast numbers of victims (a majority of the town's population) are being stored aboard Big Top. The Klowns insert a crazy straw into Mayor of the Crescent Cove inside the cotton candy, sucking the deceased Mayor's gelatinized body.

Debbie is eventually freed, and the Terenzi Brothers' ice cream truck is crashed into their spaceship. Mike, Debbie, and Officer Hanson run to the truck, but it won't start. JoJo, a 30 ft. tall Klown and leader of the Klown Army, emerges for the film's climax. Mike, Debbie, and Hanson all run, but Rich and Paul stay in the truck "because it's a rental." JoJo seemingly kills Rich and Paul. A showdown between Hanson and Klown Emperor ensues, while Mike and Debbie are told to escape. Hanson is caught by the Klown's clutches. The Klown brings Hanson to his face and in turn is destroyed by Hanson who uses his police badge to penetrate the Klown's nose. It and the alien's spaceship explode. Despite everything, the heroes and the Terenzis survive with only minor injuries. Debbie then asks if its over and pies fly down and hit them both in the face to the sound of the clowns laughter.

WOW! is about all I can say for this movie. If you can appreciate super corny "horror" films then this one is a must see. Some movies are SO bad they're good and this one is one of those. The Killer Klowns from outer space were everything you'd think they would be for a low budget 1988 film. They kept their victims in giant cocoon eggs made out of cotton candy, had a dog made out of balloons that chased victims, used popcorn to shoot at people, and captured townspeople with a T-Rex shadow puppet! This movie had bad acting and not much better of a plot line, but like I said before, if you love these movies for a good laugh at how truly horrible some movie making can be then it is worth the watch. Otherwise, don't waste your time. It isn't worth the watch if you are looking for a real horror film - only for a few laughs.

I would rate this movie with a 2/5

Movie Review: Employee of the Month

Wednesday, January 19, 2011 0 comments

Synopsis: For customers of Super Club, the largest high-volume, bulk-discount retailer in the country, membership has its privileges. For workers at the cavernous store, the most coveted honor is the "Employee of the Month" award, and having one's photo immortalized on the wall of fame in the staff lounge. Enter Zack Bradley and Vince Downey, two ultra competitive Super Club workers whose ten years of employment have resulted in drastically different career paths. While Vince--with the aid of his trusty sidekick Jorge--has advanced to become head cashier and winner of 17 consecutive "E of M" awards, Zack is the ultimate slacker whose scruffy appearance and laid back attitude has made him popular with his colleagues, but kept him stuck in the lowly ranks of the store's box boys. The duo's longtime rivalry comes to a bitter head when Amy--a beautiful new cashier with a reputation of only dating "Employee of the Month" winners--transfers to the store, immediately becoming the object of both Zack and Vince's affection and often comical gamesmanship. While Vince instantly impresses Amy with his crowd pleasing, flamboyant style behind his checkstand register, Zack's feeble attempts to charm his beautiful new co-worker quickly backfire against him. With the race to win Amy's affections slipping away, Zack determines his only chance rests in winning the store's next "Employee of the Month" award.
Starring: Dane Cook, Dax Shepard, Harland Williams, Brian George, Jessica Simpson
Directed by: Greg Coolidge
U.S. Rating: PG-13

I had the chance to watch Employee of the Month one more time this week, and I totally enjoyed it. The first time I watched, it was over 3 years ago and this week, I had the same good laughs I had when I watched it those years ago.

Employee of the Month brings the story of Zack, a "box boy" working at a Super Club, the largest high-volume, bulk-discount retailer in the country. He tries to avoid responsibilities. Years before, he went for an internet venture and lost all of his own money and his grandmother's money, forcing them to live together. Since that event, he decided to take life in a very easy way, not being responsible at all.

He has some cool friends at his job. In fact, Zack and his friends enjoy some especial benefits from their work place. They have a secret crib where they spend their breaks, playing cards, drinking beer, spying other employees and having some fun.

Zack hates Vince, the "star" of this retailer. Vince has been the employee of the month for 17 months in a row. He's the fastest cashier of the retailer and he's proud about it. Zack plays pranks on him just because he loves it, he hates him to much to avoid it.

Everything changes when the retailer hires Amy, a new cashier. Zack and Vince will soon be involved in a personal competition to get Amy's attention. Zack gets the news that Amy has some attraction for the employees of the month, so he decides to win the award the month that is about to start.

All of his friends laugh histerically towards the news and decision of running for this award, since they know how irresponsible, always late and bad employee he is. He starts working hard to make it happen, but he learns fast how difficult is geting the "daily star" through the good deeds and hard work.

He finally sees the results of his hard work when he starts getting those daily stars and tie the results with Vince. The only problem is that he lost the vision on what matters the most... his friends. Amy also knew that he was doing it for her, because he thought she'd like him if he won the competition.

At the end, they run for the last competition. Zack has decided to run for the award just because he can do it for himself, not for someone else.

I'm not a huge fan of Jessica Simpson. I personally believe she's the perfect example of what a dumb blond bimbo really is. I'm glad that Dane Cook and Dax Shepard stole the show and just helped her to be part of it.

Some people criticized the film saying that it was extremely predictable. Yes, it was predictable. If you're running for the "Employee of the Month", and the title of the film is "Employee of the Month", what do you think is going to happen?! Some other people criticized that Dane Cook wasn't funny at all, and I personally believe that he was actually playing the "less" funny role in this film.

Yes, the film was predictable, and it was a silly comedy film, but totally fun and enjoyable to watch. It is one of those comedy films that makes the perfect evening at home, relaxing while watching it and eating some popcorn and a good drink. If you're looking for some silly laughs, and you don't mind watching Jessica Simpson playing his real personality, it will be a good option to watch.

I would rate this movie with a 3/5
