Movie Review: The Answer Man

Thursday, December 10, 2009
Synopsis: Arlen Faber is the reclusive author of "Me and God," a book that has redefined spirituality for an entire generation and has been translated into over 100 languages. On the eve of the 20th anniversary of his still wildly popular book, Arlen is still sought after as the man who has all the answers. Arlen's life collides with Elizabeth, a single mom raising her seven year-old son, and Kris, a young man fresh out of rehab who is searching for meaning. Both Elizabeth and Kris are hopeful that Arlen has the answers, but the truth is, he hasn't got a clue.

Starring: Jeff Daniels, Lauren Graham, Lou Taylor Pucci, Olivia Thirlby, Kat Dennings
Directed by: John Hindman
U.S. Rating: R

For those who have watched this film, yes, it might be a sassy plot with some flaws or inconsistencies, but I MUST admit that I really loved the film. The Answer Man offers such an enjoyable smart sense of humor and great dialogues. It might be kinda slow during some moments, but it definitely will keep you laughing during most of the important moments of the film. The perfect film for an early morning in bed or a quiet afternoon at home.

The Answer Man is about a man who "supposedly" talks with God and has received the answers to some of the most important questions in life. He's been writing most of these experiences and knowledge and has collected more than 25 books over 20 years of writing. He tries to keep his life and privacy under radar and he lives a pretty boring, depressing and lonely life... until he meets the perfect girl. After suffering of a severe back pain, he visits a quiropractor to be adjusted and meets Laureen Graham. They start a friendship relationship that soon will turn into what seems to be a life-chaging romance experience. During this process, they will face some experiences and situations, crossed with other people's lives and tragedies, bringing a great romantic drama ending to what I believe it is a funny and smart script played by such a talented cast.

What did I like from this movie?

1. I totally enjoyed most of the dialogues on this film. I believe it offered such smart and hilarious comments and expressions!
2. It offered such a professional cast for the roles in this film
3. It tried to keep a balance of comedy/drama. I couldn't define the film as a romantic comedy with some drama, or a romantic drama with some comedy. It was able to balance the comedy/drama content in most of the scenes

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. The plot has a couple of slow/boring scenes during the film, but it was ok though

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

  2. HOW WEIRD IS THAT!?!? I watched this movie earlier today!!! I thought it was really good. I laughed, I almost shed a tear (at the part where the little boy asks how long two weeks is), and I was basically sitting on the edge of my chair the entire movie. I just couldn't wait to see how it ended. Definitely worth the time!

  3. That's funny! I really enjoyed the film. I laughed so hard when the guy from the library went to his house to ask him a question and he answered explaining the needs of good and evil... and at the end he says: "If you walk and you smell sh%&~ then you walk away!"

About the kid, yes, I believe it was the moment (when they were at the piano) when he really faced it... changed and started doing better in his life and care about other people!
