Movie Review: Failure to Launch

Wednesday, September 23, 2009
Synopsis: At 35, Tripp has an interesting job, a hip car, a passion for sailing, and a great house - trouble is, he lives with his parents. They want him out, so they hire Paula, an "interventionist," who has a formula in these cases: chance encounter, get him to ask her out, involve him in a trauma, meet his friends and get their nod, delay sex, have him teach her something, then launch him. It's worked up to now, but this gets complicated when Tripp thinks she's getting too serious and one of his pals is attracted to Paula's deadpan, semi-alcoholic roommate, who's plagued by a mockingbird. Too many secrets may scrub the launch, and what if Paula really likes him? Who can intervene then?

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Sarah Jessica Parker, Zooey Deschanel, Justin Bartha, Bradley Cooper
Directed by: Tom Dey
U.S. Rating: PG-13

I'd consider Failure to Launch some kind of a female version of Hitch, with the only difference that Hitch didn't get involved with the targets, and Sarah Jessica Parker's role gets directly involved with her clients' targets. This romantic comedy brought a great cast with a plot that, no matter how many times you might have laughed in this movie, it wasn't memorable enough to help you remember the movie the morning after. I think that Matthew McConaughey is a really great actor, I've enjoyed to see him in action/drama/romance movies, but still can't see him in comedy movies. I think he tries so hard to be funny that it looks like fake humor, I mean, fake humor. No matter what, it's a truly romantic comedy. The film is entertaining due to the great cast involved in this production. I mean, his parents, especially his dad... is hilarious! Zooey Deschanel's sarcasm and performance gets the whole attention and the assistance of Justin Bartha and Bradley Cooper.

What did I like from this movie?

1. I totally laughed out loud when the first girl, and later S.J. Parker asked him... do you live with your parents?! and he responds with the funny question... Is there a problem?!
2. The whole situation with Zooey Deschanel, her sarcasm and the bird, really funny, especially when she's looking for a gun and then they shot at it with the BB
3. When Tripp's mom starts breaking some habits and makes him to do things he's never done before and everyone was amazed about it, really funny
4. Tripp's father is really funny. The moment when he enters in his room during the date with the first girl and then with the "naked room"... hilarious!

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. The very end, even though the moment when they talk and solve their problems, the scenes at the bar with the computers, big screen, etc., personally didn't like it
2. Why didn't the people involved with this project work on a sequel about Zooey Deschanel's life? She stole the show in this movie and she'd deserve a movie about her life, according with her role in this movie

I would rate this movie with a 3/5
