Movie Review: 500 Days of Summer

Saturday, September 12, 2009
Synopsis: Tom believes, even in this cynical modern world, in the notion of a transforming, cosmically destined, lightning-strikes-once kind of love. Summer doesn't. Not at all. But that doesn't stop Tom from going after her, again and again, like a modern Don Quixote, with all his might and courage. Suddenly, Tom is in love not just with a lovely, witty, intelligent woman -- but with the very idea of Summer, the very idea of a love that still has the power to shock the heart and stop the world. The fuse is lit on Day 1 when Tom, a would-be architect turned sappy greeting card writer, encounters Summer, his boss's breezy, beautiful new secretary, fresh off the plane from Michigan. Though seemingly out of his league, Tom soon discovers he shares plenty in common with Summer. By Day 31, things are moving ahead, albeit "casually." By Day 32, Tom is irreparably smitten, living in a giddy, fantastical world of Summer on his mind. By Day 185, things are in serious limbo -- but not without hope. And as the story winds backwards and forwards through Tom and Summer's on-again, off-again, sometimes blissful, often tumultuous dalliance -- all of which adds up to a kaleidoscopic portrait of why, and how, we still struggle so laughably, cringingly hard to make sense of love and to hopefully make it real.

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel, Geoffrey Arend, Chloe Grace Moretz, Matthew Gray Gubler
Directed by: Marc Webb
U.S. Rating: PG-13

Just had the chance to watch this movie and I must say that one of the best quotes in this movie is the one at the very beginning: "This is not a love movie". I think most of us don't pay attention to this quote, but that's what the movie is all about! I totally enjoyed it, even though, the end of the movie wouldn't offer you what you might expect. Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is the hard worker, dreamer and romantic guy that believes in love, its force and everything involved with it. In the other hand, Summer (Zooey Deschanel) is the smart girl who likes things simple and doesn't believe in love, its force and everything involved in it the way Tom believes it. A total romantic comedy that brings a different plot for what we normally expect from these kind of stories. The plot brings the whole process of this romantic story from day 1 to day 500, giving some twist to the chronological order, which makes it interesting and entertaining. Worth to watch.

What did I like from this movie?

1. The soundtrack from this movie is really great
2. The way the director focus the story, jumping forward and backwards in the story of Tom and Summer, it helped to keep the interest and intrigue on the story
3. The funny scene whe the little sister comes to the rescue, giving him the tips and advises from a woman's point of view
4. The way how the plot shows the real personality of both roles, especially Summer's role. Even though she might have screwed Tom's love story, you actually don't hate her :)
5. The scene at the bar when they're enjoying the karaoke night, kinda of entertaining

What did I dislike from this movie?

1. Of course, the end is not what you expect from this guy efforts, but once again, remember the quote: "This is not a love story"

I would rate this movie with a 3/5

  1. I was hoping for some kind of awesome romantic comedy...that really wasn't what this was, but it was still good. I like the actors. They look normal. Not like overly gorgeous and what not. I really like that.

Thanks for the date night honey! It was one of the best so far!

  3. This is a great review. I can't wait to see this. I really, really can't. :-D And I can't believe how deep Joseph Gordon Levitt's voice has gotten - I still think of him as the kid in 3rd Rock.
