Trailers of the Month

Synopsis: For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world -- Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world's great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It's up to a Marine staff sergeant and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they've ever encountered before.
Starring: Aaron Eckhart, Bridget Moynahan, Michelle Rodriguez, Michael Pena, Adetokumboh M Cormack
Directed by: Jonathan Liebesman
U.S. Rating: PG-13

Battle: Los Angeles, definitely one of the most expected films in 2011. The whole production and advertising was perfect. The drama and action shown on these trailers were more than intense that I definitely wanted to watch the film really bad.

But, one thing is what you expect from a film like this, and what you really get. I've said before that there's not much room for creativity in these kind of Sci-Fi films where the human kind is being attacked and invaded by aliens. Just very few films have really impressed me, for example, the most recent one... District 9.

I remember few months ago when I had the chance to watch Skyline. A film with great CGI effects but so cheap on its content. I was extremely disappointed when I saw the film, since it didn't bring anything good other than great CGI effects. I wouldn't say it was what I got from Battle: Los Angeles. I must say it had a much better plot, DEFINITELY a much, much better cast, but there was no room for something different. It was just more of what we've got so far with these kind of films.

And when I say that it didn't bring something original or creative I mean, for example, that an extremely strong force from another planet that has been destroying the main cities around the world comes to fight with "conventional" weapons. I don't see special weapons, I see machine guns and conventional granades! There's a moment when they notice these aliens are capable to intercept their radio communications, but they destroy the mother ship planning an air strike with a radio conversation... So, there was some things that showed some lack of creativity on the script.

I must give some credits on the effects and especially, the cast. Some overrated drama and lots, lots, lots of explosions.

If you're into these kind of Sci-Fi alien invation films, it is a film that you can enjoy... Definitely 100 times better than Skyline or Monsters.

In case you want to know more details about the film, here's the complete plot: On August 11, 2011, mysterious objects thought to be meteorites crash into Earth's oceans near several major cities including Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, New Orleans,Mexico City,New York, Hong Kong, London, Paris, Barcelona, Hamburg, Sydney. These objects are revealed to be spacecraft containing hostile alien forces. The U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton arrive in Los Angeles to defend against alien ground forces and assist in the evacuation of civilians in preparation for a bombing campaign. Among the military's forces are Michael Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), a 20-year veteran U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant who lost many men under his command during his last deployment in Iraq. Nantz had planned to retire, but the situation requires him to replace the platoon sergeant of a platoon from "E" Company, 2nd Battalion 5th Marines.

The Platoon Commander, 2nd Lieutenant William Martinez (Ramón Rodríguez), attends a briefing at an FOB (Forward Operating Base). The platoon's mission is to rescue civilians from an LAPD police station with a three-hour time limit before the Air Force bombs the area. They are ambushed by aliens multiple times and suffer casualties. They also encounter a group of U.S. Army soldiers from the 40th Infantry Division, including an Air Force intelligence Technical Sergeant Elena Santos (Michelle Rodriguez). Eventually, the combined team reaches the police station, finding five civilians inside. A helicopter arrives and attempts to evacuate some of the wounded Marines, but it is destroyed by an alien air unit upon takeoff.

The Marines commandeer a bus for evacuation. Prior to evacuation, they find a wounded alien and with the help of one of the civilians, they learn of the aliens' weaknesses and military tactics; finding that the alien infantry have a weak point in the torso, that the alien attack aircraft are remote-controlled drones and the aliens monitor and locate Earth military forces through monitoring their radio communications. The Marines speculate that there must be a central command center, and that its destruction would eliminate control of the alien drones, opening the enemy forces to air attack. On a freeway, they encounter a lone M1 Abram that is under attack and subsequently destroyed by the aliens. The bus is then attacked and the Marines begin rappelling the civilians off the side of the freeway. One of the civilians, Joe Rincon (Michael Peña), is wounded after firing on the aliens. Martinez is also wounded and sacrifices himself to destroy an enemy unit by detonating C-4 explosives inside the bus, shortly after placing Nantz in command of the platoon.

Nantz leads what remains of the platoon outside the bombing zone, and they rest at a convenience store. A news report speculates that the aliens have attacked Earth for its water supply which they use as fuel. The team waits for the bombing to begin, but nothing happens. They arrive at the FOB, only to discover that it has already been destroyed by the aliens, nullifying the airstrike. They decide to head for another extraction point, where a helicopter should be available to evacuate them. Before they embark, Rincon dies of his wounds and Corporal Lockett (whose brother died under Nantz's command) openly doubts Nantz's ability to lead. Nantz and Lockett come to terms with their guilt and anger, and the platoon reaches the extraction point using a LAV-25 and a HMMWV. As they are being evacuated, Nantz spots a large black area on the ground where electric power seems to be disabled. Nantz believes the black area to be the location of the alien command center and that it is hidden underground. Nantz and his platoon disembarks from the helicopter, planning to find the exact location of the command center so they can call in a missile strike.

Going underground, the Marines confirm the presence of a large alien vessel. They return to the surface and succeed in calling in a guided artillery strike using laser designators. However, the command center remains intact and rises from the ground. The Marines repel alien forces as more artillery shells are launched at the hovering command center, and eventually they destroy it. This disables the alien aircraft in the area, forcing the alien ground forces to retreat.

Soon after, the team is extracted to a temporary base in the Mojave Desert, where they are greeted as heroes for their outstanding bravery. All other cities under attack now plan to emulate their strategy, destroying the alien command center in each city. More forces are being sent to Los Angeles to finish off the aliens there. Despite orders to rest, Nantz and the platoon instead rejoin the fight. (Source: Wikipedia)

Synopsis: Fresh out of prison, Mitchell lands a legitimate job as a handyman for a rich actress who's eager to reward him with cash, cars and sex. But Mitchell can never truly escape his violent past or the dangerous world of loan sharks, druggies and other bottomfeeders.
Starring: Keira Knightley, Colin Farrell, David Thewlis, Anna Friel, Ray Winstone
Directed by: William Monahan
U.S. Rating: R

Well, I must say that it is either because I'm not totally used to British films or because the plot was too slow or confusing for me. The thing is that it was extremely difficult for me to follow London Boulevard. I remember the first time I watched the trailer, it was right before the film was released in theaters, I thought it looked pretty interesting and entertaining. I never went to watch it to the theater since I preferred to watch other films before. Now that I had the chance to watch the film at home, I thought it was me, but after asking my wife, I noticed that both of us had the same problem: We couldn't follow what was happening!

London Boulevard is the story of a man newly released from prison who falls in love with a reclusive young movie star who recruits him as her bodyguard and finds himself in a duel with a vicious gangster.

The film brings a top quality cast but as I said before, I couldn't follow the story. I can't really say the reason, but the truth is that it didn't deliver what was sold on its trailer.

I would rate this movie with a 1/5

Movie Review: Arthur

Thursday, April 28, 2011 1 comments

Synopsis: Irresponsible charmer Arthur Bach has always relied on two things to get by: his limitless fortune and the good sense of lifelong nanny Hobson to keep him out of trouble. Now he faces his biggest challenge -- choosing between an arranged marriage that will ensure his lavish lifestyle or an uncertain future with the one thing money can't buy, Naomi, the only woman he has ever loved. With Naomi's inspiration and some unconventional help from Hobson, Arthur will take the most expensive risk of his life and finally learn what it means to become a man.
Starring: Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Garner, Greta Gerwig, Nick Nolte, Luis Guzman
Directed by: Jason Winer
U.S. Rating: PG-13

I must start saying that I still remember the first time I watched the original film from 1981 with Dudley Moore. It was considered one of those great comedies from the 80s, and honestly, it really was. Dudley Moore was simply hilarious playing Arthur, not mentioning the amazing cast involved in that film. I was really excited when I heard Warner Bros was working on a remake of this successful comedy, even tough, I got really cautious about how good it would be when I knew that Arthur would be played by Russell Brand. Oh boy, I wasn't wrong. I'm not a big fan of Russell Brand. I personally believe he looks and acts like a total weirdo. I think that the only decent job he's made so far was on the film Get Him To The Greek, maybe because the rest of the cast had such a strong influence on the film that he was just part of the job, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, as said before, I didn't like the idea of casting Russell Brand to play Arthur. I must admit I had a few laughts, but none of them related with Brand's performance. The rest of the cast made a great work, especially Luis Guzman and Helen Mirren. Even though it was part of "Arthur's personality and nature", Russell Brand played the role in another level of stupidity and childish personality. Yes, he played it ok, but I do believe he didn't honor Dudley Moore's work at all.

The plot brings the story of Arthur, a childish momma's boy who's drunk most of the time and spends his fortune with no limits or bounderies. While his mother tries to keep their empire on top of their expectations, Arthur's behavior is pushing investors away. That's why his mother offered him an ultimatum: Marry Susan Johnson, a talented business executive and ex-girlfriend of Arthur. They have nothing in common, but since his mother threatened him that if he didn't accept the proposal he'd loose all of his money ($950 millions), he agreed to do it. The only problem is that during that time of engagement and wedding preparation, Arthur meets a nice humble girl and falls madly in love for her.

Arthur needs to manage the situation of being engaged with someone he doesn't love and someone he met and fell in love with but can't tell the truth about it.

A really entertaining plot, but as said, it was too childish to handle. It could have been such an entertaining film to watch if maybe the lead role could have been played by someone else.

I would rate this movie with a 2/5

Movie Review: Just Go With It

Monday, April 25, 2011 2 comments

Synopsis: A plastic surgeon, romancing a much younger schoolteacher, enlists his loyal assistant to pretend to be his soon to be ex-wife, in order to cover up a careless lie. When more lies backfire, the assistant's kids become involved, and everyone heads off for a weekend in Hawaii that will change all their lives.
Starring: Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Nick Swardson, Brooklyn Decker, Bailee Madison, Griffin Gluck, Dave Matthews, Kevin Nealon, Rachel Dratch, Allen Covert, Dan Patrick, Minka Kelly
Directed by: Dennis Dugan
U.S. Rating: PG-13

It's been a long run for Adam Sandler. I've watched almost every single one of his films and enjoyed most of his work. There has been some crappy films or roles performed in the past, but he's been one of those persistent actors and that has helped him to improve on his work and talent. I do believe his latest films have been more than entertaining. Probably because he's been working with such amazing and talented people and picked some really good plots. Just Go With It is one of those great films with a pretty entertaining and funny plot and an amazing cast.

Just Go With It brings the story of Danny Maccabee, a successful plastic surgeon in Los Angeles who suffered a traumatic and horrible marriage experience, after been heartbroken on his wedding day 20 years ago. Since that event, Danny has been using his wedding band to hook up with girls, just taking advantage of it living lie after lie.

Katherine Murphy is the only woman he trusts. She's his office manager and knows all of his secrets and women adventures. Katherine is a divorced woman, mother of two.

During a party night, Danny meets Palmer, a sexy, beautiful, young sixth grade math teacher. He hangs out with her all night (without his wedding band), having a great connection, but when they try to get each others phone number, Palmer finds Danny's wedding band in his jeans' pocket while she was looking for his business card.

When Danny believes Palmer is the perfect girl for him and that she might be the one, he tries to keep going out with her, but to do that, he needs to turn the wedding band into a fake marriage and gets Katherine and her children into the scene, making Palmer believe that Katherine and her kids are his wife and kids. That leads one lie to another one until it gets out of control.

At the end, when Danny and Palmer announce their wedding during their trip to Hawaii, Danny recognizes the amazing and unique connection he has with Katherine and that they might be more in loved with each other than they could ever imagine.

Just Go With It was just a refreshing and extremely funny film. It was not just about the funny plot, the amazing cast, but all the extra details that made the film really entertaining and easy to watch. We totally enjoyed and would recommend for anyone who enjoys this amazing cast and wants to have some good laughs.

By the way, you can say that Brooklyn Decker is a gorgeous girl, but even being that beautiful, when she's right next to Jennifer Aniston, she looks like out of Jennifer's league!

I would rate this movie with a 4/5

Movie Review: Source Code

Friday, April 22, 2011 0 comments

Synopsis: When decorated soldier Captain Colter Stevens wakes up in the body of an unknown man, he discovers he's part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. In an assignment unlike any he's ever known, he learns he's part of a government experiment called the "Source Code," a program that enables him to cross over into another man's identity in the last 8 minutes of his life. With a second, much larger target threatening to kill millions in downtown Chicago, Colter re-lives the incident over and over again, gathering clues each time, until he can solve the mystery of who is behind the bombs and prevent the next attack.
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright, Michael Arden
Directed by: Duncan Jones
U.S. Rating: PG-13

Source Code was one of the first expected Sci-Fi films of the year in my "must-see" list. To honor the film, I must say it was entertaining, the plot was different (well, sort of) and the cast was magnific.

What is the film about? Well, Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a decorated army helicopter pilot who finds himself in a mission to locate the author of a bomb which exploded and destroyed a train headed into Chicago. Stevens is isolated inside a chamber, where Air Force officer Capt. Colleen Goodwin (Vera Farmiga) explains to Stevens through a computer screen that he is inside the Source Code, a program that allows him to take over someone's body in his or her last eight minutes of life.

Stevens' mission is to locate the bomb, discover who built it, and report back to Goodwin before the bomber can detonate a second larger bomb, a dirty nuclear device, in downtown Chicago, which could cause the deaths of millions of people. Stevens can perform different actions each time and learn from those actions. Goodwin and the Source Code's creator, Dr. Rutledge (Jeffrey Wright), tell him that the Source Code is not a simulation, but a visit into the past in the form of an alternative reality. He's told that he cannot truly alter the past in the same reality to save Christina or any of the other passengers, but that he must gather intel that can be used to alter the future and prevent a future attack.

Every time he is sent into the train he awakens as Sean Fentress, a teacher, sitting across a woman named Christina Warren (Michelle Monaghan). A series of events repeat each time with slight variations while he goes on searching for the terrorist and deepening his relationship with Christina, until the bomb that destroys the train goes off and Stevens (as Fentress) dies, sending him back to the chamber.

Stevens has no memory of how he arrived to the mission; his last memory is of flying in a recent mission in Afghanistan while taking on enemy gunfire. Confused and frustrated, Stevens wonders how he got assigned to this project. Using a cellphone, he eventually discovers that he supposedly died in the war two months ago and that his severely injured body was apparently appropriated by the Air Force and used by Rutledge to enter the Source Code.

Stevens is sent back several more times. The second time he locates the bomb in the ventilation shaft above the bathroom. Each time he learns more, both about the terrorist attack and his real life personal situation, even though Rutledge and Goodwin constantly direct him to focus on finding the bomber. Stevens resolves to complete his mission, now with the added personal goal of saving Christina and the people on the train if at all possible.

He eventually discovers that the bomber is an American extremist named Derek Frost (Michael Arden). Stevens pursues Frost to a white van where the radioactive bomb is hidden. Stevens is eventually shot dead in the confrontation, but still able to gather enough information about Frost to inform Rutledge and Goodwin after he awakes from the source-code. Authorities are able to apprehend Frost and save Chicago before the second bomb is detonated.

With the mission accomplished, Rutledge orders Stevens' memory wiped/erased and stored for reuse in further missions. But Stevens persuades Goodwin to send him in one more time and give him one last chance to avert the train disaster. Goodwin agrees that he deserves to be allowed to die in peace afterwards instead of being held alive as a military artifact.

With the information he has uncovered from previous sorties, Stevens is able to defuse the bomb and capture Frost before he can destroy the train. Frost is arrested by the police and the people on the train are saved. Stevens and Christina kiss in the last seconds before the plug is to be pulled at the eight-minute mark. In that instant, Goodwin turns off his life support per his request, but to his surprise, his mind remains in Sean Fentress' body, being able to safely leave the train with Christina and the rest of the passengers. When I started watching the film, I found some similarities with other previous films, for example, Deja Vú (with Denzel Washington). An army project that is able to move in time to control and change important events and find the responsibles of those events. The plot was really simple but played by an amazing cast who made it worth to watch. I wouldn't say the film ends with a twisted scene or situation, but I didn't expect it.

I would rate this movie with a 3.5/5

From the producers of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs The World and Paul, we get the most recent film, Attack The Block. Element Pictures Distribution and Optimum Releasing have released the movie trailer for this upcoming film to be released this next month.
Synopsis: A fast, funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing estate into a sci-fi playground. A tower block into a fortress under siege. And teenage street kids into heroes. Its inner city versus outer space.

Trainee nurse Sam is walking home to her flat in a scary South London tower block when shes robbed by a gang of masked, hooded youths. Shes saved when the gang are distracted by a bright meteorite, which falls from the sky and hits a nearby parked car. Sam flees, just before the gang are attacked by a small alien creature that leaps from the wreckage. The gang chase the creature and kill it, dragging its ghoulish carcass to the top of the block, which they treat as their territory.

While Sam and the police hunt for the gang, a second wave of meteors fall. Confident of victory against such feeble invaders, the gang grab weapons, mount bikes and mopeds, and set out to defend their turf. But this time, the creatures are bigger. Much bigger. Savage, shadowy and bestial, they are hunting their fallen comrade and nothing will stand in their way. The estate is about to become a battleground. And the bunch of no-hope kids who just attacked Sam are about to become her, and the blocks, only hope. .
